I also predict a mass fan revolt along the lines of, "M$ sucks!" and "Bungie is overrated."
Yeah, let's pretend that it isn't happening nowadays :P

It's obvious that Bungie will one day sign a contract with another publisher. They might come up with a concept that MS wouldn't be interested at all, so they would find someone else to publish it, which would be why Bungie separated from Microsoft in the first place, to have more creative initiative and control.

Or they could go completely the self-funding route, where they would just be looking for the best business partner to distribute (/and advertise) their game, like id or Valve. Which would be, ironically, EA itself (at least looking at those self-funding devs like id, Valve, Crytek or even Harmonix).

If Bungie go third party, it will be with EA for precisely that reason. None of the other third party publishers offer those kinds of deals (and only a limited few could afford Bungie anyway). EA are also a bit more serious about publishing on the Mac which given Bungie's roots is probably appealing.

There's a remote chance of them going 2nd party to Sony but it's so remote as to make it hardly worth considering. MS will publish the majority of their games over the next 5 years. Look at the marketing they put behind Gears yet they don't own Epic or that IP either.

Microsoft could be planning a "Halo Con" event in the future

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=20...

"You can do a HaloCon. Nothing on [the scale of Comic Con], but you could bring a few hundred people just to see a Halo thing. We're really not worried about Halo's ability to stand out and shine in the future. There's plenty of stuff coming."

While making it clear that no formal planning had yet been undertaken, he explained that the "passionate and loyal community" had made the prospect of a standalone Halo showcase attractive. "We do things for [the communtiy] all the time. Bungie has done fanfests at E3 and it would be lovely to see something bigger, something more ambitious in the future."
Well Halo certainly is big enough. I can easily imagine people dressed up like Master Chief, Cortana, Elites, UNSC officers and other Halo related characters. I can imagine Halo tournaments and other activities as well.

The fanbase IS there. They could pull it off.

At the very least, the Halo-Heads certainly wouldn't have to guess when and where the next Halo announcement would be made.

O'Conner also played down the Bungie announcment drama-
"It's E3, it's complicated. You saw the Microsoft press conference - there was a ton of stuff. And someone, somewhere decided strategically that another time is better, and it will be, and there's going to be an announcement and it's going to be awesome"

Good to see that Franky hasn't totally lost his mind.

All in all, I could care less about which publisher Bungie decides to work with in the future so long as it isn't Nintendo.

Reasons should be obvious. Then again, Master Chief does seem due for an appearance in Smash Brothers. :)

What about just the Liepzig games convention ? they can make the Halo announcement there, wouldn that be more appropriate than a separate event ?

Given Halo's popularity in the US I'm not sure it is appropiate although I hope so as I'll be there this year!

The way Matrrick was talking mind it really sounded like a separate "Gamers day" type event though. Maybe they'll be an X08.

Man, I love this Marathon-like stuff.

This enemy - YOUR enemy - has proven more irritating than I anticipated.
They own nothing which they have not stolen. I can barely make sense of
their incessant rhetoric, except to know that you seem to be their Devil.
lol, Microsoft?

True, but his words carry far more weight for me than most others at Bungie, especially the new studio head, which was once a tester?

Oh and this part here

As for this world I encounter new ghosts every day. What I have found
will either save or destroy you. This sanctuary, this unbroken circle,
has effectively concealed its power for how long? Perhaps hundreds of
thousands of years. Whoever made such a place must now live in chains;
there is no other explanation for their absence.
Sounds like a hint as to Ghosts of the Onyx. The shield world is mysterious in a lot of ways. It could potentially save the human race or for all we know it may contain secrets that will prove dangerous to anyone and anything. This santuary, this unbroken circle could refer to the Shield World and how it has managed to stay a secret for as long as it has. Whoever made such a place must now live in chains; there is no other explanation for their absense. That could mean the absense of the forerunners who built the shield world.

Could the next Halo game be a squad based shooter that takes place on the Shield World with the remaining members of Blue Team along with the still remaining Spartan IIIs?
You have brought nothing into this world, and we will ensure you bring
nothing out.
That could be referring to the fact that Blue Team along with mendez, Halsey and the rest of the Spartan IIIs are inside the shield world looking for something of significance that could help them to escape or in their war against the Covenant. They still believe there is a war going on. Seems to me the one speaking could be an AI inside the Shield World that will try to ensure they don't leave with any of the shield world's secrets alive?

Maybe a new enemy will emerge from within the Shield World.

And Frank O'Connor was a game journalist. What's your point? "Others at Bungie" were still more crucial to Halo than O'Connor, including Bungie founders like Jason Jones who was also lead designer for Halo.

Can't wait for the announcement. The text gives us so many hints that when I start to think about what could mean what I get a headache :)

lol Franky is far FAR more than a game journalist :)

Labeling him as just a game journalist is the understatement of the century. Wasn't he one of bungie's biggest writers and a crucial component in the creation of the story bible for which the entire Halo universe is derived?

You commented on Ryan's past position as something that determines his abilities or personality, I pointed out what Frank did in past. Yes Frank O'Connor is a very cool guy, but can you say much about Harold Ryan?

Wasn't really commenting on his ability, but more as to who I personally hold in higher regard.

Harold was studio manager all through halo 3 I think and to my knowledge was even the one in charge of testing for halo ce and halo 2. Even with all of that, I would still value what Frank has to say far more over anything Harold has to say. Especially after his recent statement.

People may not have liked what Mattrick said, but he did the right thing. Tried to play down any potentially hurt feelings over the canceling of bungie's announcement and tried to drop the fans a bone or two by revealing that what Bungie was working on and was going to reveal was a new Halo title. What Harold Ryan ended up doing with his statement was shortsighted and pretty irresponsible considering he's the one in charge of the studio.

Frankie's comment was far more responsible and I bet were he still working within Bungie, his statement would still be as professional as possible without ruffling too many feathers. All developers should have to answer to their Publisher and Bungie should be no different. If anything, considering what Microsoft and Bungie have accomplished together, it's pretty bad business all around to be dropping fresh meat to the sharks that may call into question the state of the relationship between Bungie and Microsoft.

Not so fast ;)

This also sounds like the ramblings of Durandal or it could even be Leela who in her rampancy was never removed from the network she was installed in.

Durandal in Marathon-

"Can you conceive the birth of a world, or the creation of everything? That which gives us the potential to most be like God is the power of creation. Creation takes time. Time is limited. For you, it is limited by the breakdown of the neurons in your brain. I have no such limitations. I am limited only by the closure of the universe"

Rampant AIs talk exactly like those cryptic lines in that viral countdown, Durandal especially who was obsessed with godhood and preserving himself at the expense of the entire universe.

This could be a Marathon game coming from Bungie as well. We'll have to wait and see.

OMG don't tease me. Marathon has no narrative, but it has a story that dwarfs Halo in sheer coolness. I would love to see Marathon reborn. I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense though. In many ways Halo was Marathon's spiritual successor. It's not a continuation of Marathon's story, or even really set in the same world.. it's more like a "requel," or what Marathon could have been.

Still.. I would mind that one bit.

Bungie competing with Halo, interesting :P

Of course, all this drama could be very intentional. Ignore they say it isn't, everyone knows Bungie/MS had some issues. Supposedly they are "playing nice" now. What better way to hype up their new release announcement by making a faux arguement over the dud of E3, generating a ton of media and fan attention through this fight, only to have a larger audiance at the real unviel.

At this point, even if the two idiots cannot get along, I think the new Bungie title has more attention and mindshare now than it ever would have at E3.
