2008-07-23 05:09:59 The Witcher, these are the types of pc games we need :)

Just started playing on my brand new rig

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3GHZ
Nvidia 8800GT
4GB of Corsair XMS 2 DDR2 800
Vista Ultimate 64 bit. (Didn't put Service Pack 1 on yet)

I'm really digging the hell out of this game's atmosphere and gameplay and I've only just finished the very first area of the game. The game's opening is much better handled than I would've expected and I'm still in a state of total shock and awe at just how many different skill trees are available to customize your character with in this game.

As people have heard me say before, I never really felt upgrading my pc was even worth it and few pc games these days even made me remotely desire to upgrade just to play them at the best settings. It also helped a great deal that it wasn't on consoles, but to be honest, I probably wouldn't even want to play this thing on a console after experiencing it on this pc with everything maxed out. I've been trying to find ways to see if I can give the system more than it can handle, but it's ripping through it. Then again, I haven't tried Crysis so I'd probably get like 12 fps in that game haha.

Anyway, I heard a lot of great things about the Witcher and I'm pretty happy that I decided to get it. Actually, it isn't even accurate to say that I bought the Witcher, because I really wasn't expecting to get the game. I made a purchase on Newegg and chose a couple of combo deals and, to my surprise, a copy of Witcher ended up being a gift for choosing one of the combo deal or maybe multiple combos.

I'm really happy that they included the game though because I'm just loving it. This is also apparently the team's first game ever? I haven't played much of it yet, but I can tell it's quality stuff.

I WAS going to get an ATI 4870, but eventually came to the conclusion that just because I have the money to spend, doesn't mean I should. Been trying to be a lot more responsible with money recently and I suppose that's a losing battle since I can't resist shelling out for whatever game I want to play. Anyway, if anyone is interested in a great PC title definitely pick up the Witcher. Totally worth it.

Seriously? That demo must have really sucked. I think the game is pretty good. They could definitely work on making the use of certain abilities more efficient, but other than that, I like it a lot.

I like how they present the world and character so far.

The demo is probably what you've played so far. It doesn't suck, it's terrific. There's a ton of PC games, new and old, that you can use to put your new hardware to good use. Happy gaming.

Shame he didn't wait huh? Did you miss that thread Op? I've been wanting to play this game but I'm holding out for the re-release.

I just got a very similar rig to you and I find that I often consider buying games that normally wouldn't interest me, just so I can put it to the test. I bought Bioshock again when I already own it on the 360. Same with COD4. But, yeah congrats on the new rig. Have a lot of fun.

Yeah, the super-patch is probably worth waiting for. There's information about it in the pre-existing "The Witcher" thread that's been active as recently as last week. I think it's due out in September at this point.

Witcher Enhanced edition is in to us so I don't imagine it'll be too long. There's not heaps of extra content but is probably worth the wait if you're eyeing the game.

Just the fact that they re-recorded so much of the voice acting is reason enough for me to wait. It's good to know that it's done. I guess September is pretty reasonable, maybe sooner?

No I'd say September is more than reasonable based on what I've seen this week. Then again, it is Atari which is not exactly the most streamlined of operations right now. They'll get better in time of course :-)

Most of the stuff we've done over the last couple of weeks or so has been for the September-ish time frame anyhow.

There is an even better version on the way?

I assume since they re-recorded voice acting, they probably re-did a lot of other stuff as well?

Well, if you can play it in its native language, that's one thing.. but most of us don't know Polish. I'm a descendant of Polish immigrants, but the last Polish speaking member of my family was my grandfather. If he were alive today, I don't think I could get him to play a videogame anyway :)

I think you can patch the US version to get rid of all the censorship BS, btw.

Good for you :)

I just checked wikipedia to see what's the story is about and what a BS creators came up with! But I guess you could say the last 2 books were crappy anyway, still it destroys the very interesting ending of the series to me. :[ But I guess no one here cares about it since no one had an opportunity to read the books.

Very true, although I'm sure they've been translated to English, right? I don't know much about the background, but the atmosphere, world and lore in the game is all very appealing.

So far only two books(out of total 7) have been translated to English. The books were great in general, but the further the worse, with the second last being absolute turd IMO and the last being decent with great ending.

That's interesting, I didn't know it was censored. What did they remove? It wasn't the cards was it?

Yeah, they didn't remove them, but they altered them. And there's also one character in game with bare breasts that they edited. I'm pretty sure you can mod that content back to normal, but not 100% clear on the details.

Well I hope they are for they're own sake. If the mod involves patching in the images from another version there's no drama but if the uncensored images exist in the US build and are just hidden, then the ESRB will be on their ass like a ton of bricks post hot-coffee.
