Wont this stuff be free if you already bought the game? It totally defeats the purpose of xbox live for you to have to pay for this. Then again what does it matter :)

the packs for PGR2 had to be bought, i don't see why there's a big deal about this now

the patch is free, but the new content is not - why? because it's NEW content, as in, it wasn't on the game disc - so therefore should not be free just because you bought the game. So yeah.

Optimus: I think we're going to see a lot of previously free content in the form of "microtransactions" this gen..MS has basically set up this model for that very purpose..I think the trend was sorta set in stone with the Halo 2 maps debuting at a fee. Not the nicest of trends, I guess we'll have to see what comes of it--EA is bringing this attitude over to the PC market with them as well..we've recieved one free ranked BF2 map thus far and the rest of the addons have been commercial products..including mini "booster packs" that include only three maps each..and they're not available on retail discs either--only through their download service.

XAL: That's some backwards reasoning--how about trying this one on for size: For years, developers have supported their products (especially online games) with free content--free add on content--that wasn't originally included with the product..the patch includes content (code) not included on the disc too--do you think we should pay for that labor as well? There's a reason that some people don't like where this is heading--it's not because we're cheap--but rather that these things used to come at little or not cost to the gamer..sure there have always been expansion packs, that come with a fee..but rarely, until recently, would something so simple as a small package of maps or a few cars actually cost any additional fees..

Essentially less support for existing products at a greater cost then in the past, yay. They could atleast make real expansion packs.

previously free? It will most likely follow the halo 2 model, pay at first and free later. that seems to have been the most successful, altho it may just stay pay.

Didn't they sell booster packs for PGR2?

Previously free indicates the years of gaming that happened pre-xbox, heh..though there was plenty of free content on XBL last gen--more free content than there were microtransactions--if you don't see that changing..well you're not looking very hard..and didn't the PGR2 booster pack include new track(s)? It really doesn't change a damn thing regardless--the fact is that there was plenty of free content in support of existing games in the past--and that this is changing.

I'm not pointing fingers or anything--it's the direction the whole industry is heading--less free support--more fees..but the majority of the market doesn't care--so those of us that do will just have to get used to it..

I'm trying, heh.

well pre-xbox, you weren't getting add-ons for your games period as far as consoles went, and even on pc, you were basically lucky if you got dev tools to make your own add-ons. some games went further, but not all or even most.

I didn't own pgr2 so I don't know exactly what was made available. I don't like paying again either, but I bitched about the halo 2 maps when I first heard about the charge, then when they cmae out and were high quality I willingly handed over the cash for some extra replay value.

if all it really is is new cars, I might not pay, or I might, depending on how much. I just don't think the good ol' days were nearly as good as you may have alluded to. Now, if we're at a point where they are intentionally subverting possibly user created free content to sell prepackaged content, that is a different issue, no matter what the quality.

remember when counterstrike was a free mod?
