Well I got the game yesterday, and been playing rather nonstop. Game is the awesome so far(despite my lack of knowledge of Japanese). Seems SE has a real winner on their hands. Hopefully, the US version isn't to far off.

I'm currently trying to get my first summons right now. Have to obtain them by doing certain missions that can be accessed anytime(at a save point)in the main menu. you do however have to fight them(or some?) early on in the game, so far I've faced Bahamut and Ifrit

Strangely, I want this game very badly, even though I've never played FFVII. The fact that it's a different style of combat is what tips the balance for me--I just hope I can follow the story without knowing the background.. maybe I'll read a plot synopsis of FFVII before playing it--I really have no interest in playing FFVII.

I think you're fine this is a prequel of ff7 afterall :D

No doubt you'd probably appreciate it more if you played ff7, but if the story confuses you any that means they did a terrible job because this is a prequel afterall so knowledge of ff7's story shouldn't be required. Who knows though there are certain things that could be left unanswered. They may drop some genova hints here and there who knows.

After seeing the loads differences between the psp slim and the regular psp. No way I get the regular psp. Gonna grab myself the new one for improved load times cause the load times on normal psp seem a bit excessive.

I'd love for a ff7 to release on the ps3, but I have my doubts.

That to be continued in Final Fantasy VII could just be talking about the old ps1 game, but I pray it also means PS3 title.

They better keep the battle system the way it was. If they put the ff12 battle system in there... ugh I can already see it being a problem in so many situations.

Got it this morning as expected im not a fan of the battle engine its just way too clunky on a PSP.

Haven't really played it enough to make a proper judgement but it looks fairly ok.

how is it clunky? :p

If anything, the damn thing is too easy/simple. 99% of the time you can simply spam your melee attack, with the occasional cure spell. They do have other individual magic/melee spells, but I've found them pretty useless majority of the time. Also, I'm not really feeling the D.M.W. system that much. Could be because I don't understand it, since the flashbacks be in Japanese, but whatever. I do however like the individual character summons. Except it always lands on the shitty ones for me! I'm looking at you, Aerith!

I would say the game is still a bit too easy, but I just got my ass handed multiple times by some of those "very hard" missions. One Hit KO's FTL! :(

The battle engine sucks. Invisible walls... what year is this? As much as I hate traditional turn-based Japanese RPG's, I'd rather have that than whatever they came up with for Crisis Core.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. Maybe when they localize the game they can come up with a better idea...

Yea the very hard mission are quite difficult, Infact i am having more fun doing the missions than the games story.

The story seems to be very slow paced, granted i don't understand much of it.

As for clunky controlls i was refering to using the shoulder buttons to select items and materia, it's way too easy to accidentally push the shoulder button and spam cure, end up with no mp and wonder WTF is going on because your not attacking anything.

The controlls seem a bit all over the place also, don't get me started on the summons.

It's more to do with luck than skill and I have yet to summon Ifrit once, yet he is level 4 already .. :S

I agree that the fights are very easy much of the time, and extremely repetitive to boot.

And what the hell is up with that leveling system, another game of luck ?

I didn't have that issue with the shoulder controls. But then again, I do play MHF all the time. So I guess I'm use to it.

As for leveling, lol yeah. I think it's all about Luck. Getting 777, unless I missed something. Same goes for everything else, all about luck. Well if your limit bar is above normal, like heavenly or sky soar(was it?), you have a better chance of getting character/creature summons. Which is why I'm not feeling the Mr. DMW system too much.

Still, the whole FF7 nostalgia is there. Which is why I'm still digging the game overall.

Does this mean you guys aren't enjoying the game so far? I suppose it being easy wont annoy me, but does it strike you guys as broken from a game design standpoint?

I agree Indigo there are simply too many problems that can crop up when they attempt to branch out with these new game design decisions. Turn based may be old, but it works and cuts down on a great deal of problems.

Nice to hear the ff7 aspect is keeping it enjoyable for some of you guys. I already hate the sound of this lucky leveling/summoning thing. Wonder if it's their way of saying Zack wasn't too exceptional compared to the likes of sephiroth and this is their special way of not making him appear to be too powerful by making it really hard for him to do the more amazing things?

Either way keep dropping by and give impressions whenever you guys can because I'm definitely interested in this one. As long as it doesn't seem too fundamentally broken I'll pick it up.

I wouldn't say it's broken, just takes some getting use to. I've been reading around other forums and it seems people have a love/hate relationship with the system. I'm not to fond of it, but I can deal with it. Similar to my standpoint with FF12's battle system. My real gripe is with the DMW slot system. That thing is just retarded.

But the FF7 feel is there. It is a lot better than the other FF7 completion games. The story is interesting so far, even though I don't understand everything. I do however have an overall idea of what's going on, it's just the small details that I'm missing. Some of the scenes, areas, and music(some of which being straight from FF7) all give off that FF7 nostalgia feel. The game does have it's faults, but I'm still enjoying it overall.

Yea its not broken, just has some odd choices.

I'm not feeling much of the FF7 nostalgia to be honest, yes it has the music the summons and a handful of the characters, but it comes across to me as more like kingdom hearts than FF7 for some reason.

It's just too bad this wasn't a turn based game it could have been quite a bit better.

I'm still waiting for the story to pick up the pace....

Where are you at in the story, btw?

Also, I'm not seeing the KH reference, unless you mean the battle system? Still, that is barely there either. Since the battles are random, as in you don't see the enemy on the screen before hand(unless it's the boss in mission battles), and it gives you a limited battle area to maneuver in. It's more like the Tales/ES games kind of, without the time limit in that regard. Unless you meant it was as easy/lack of depth as KH's, then I would agree with that.

I get the feeling they dumbed down the difficulty for the story missions to make it more accessible to everyone(casuals & hardcores). Then pumped it up for the optional missions, maybe thinking that the majority of the casuals wouldn't bother with it too much. I don't really know, I just find it funny they're harder than the main story ones.

Well i just see a lot of kingdom hearts in it, not just the lack of depth but the hack and slashyness of it, to some of the art direction.

It doesn't seem much like FF7, but i think that due to the new characters.

I have just teamed up with Sephiroth, not very far in.

Thats hardly a spoiler, most of the trailers show Zak with Sephiroth.

The FMV where Sephiroth, Angel and Genisis fight was good, Sephiroth was a pretty cool guy when he wasn't insane

yeah, you're right.

yeah that scene was pretty good, but it needed more One-Winged Angel. Yeah, i'm going to miss cool guy Sephiroth. I'm just waiting for the scene where he discovers his real past, and goes bat shit insane on everyone.

Somehow my save got corrupt so i'm having to start again, damn it..!!

After doing all those missions aswell, which sucks.

One thing i forgot to mention is just how good SE is at doing cutscenes, the quality of facial animations put next gen games like Lost Odyssey to shame. (notice that characters hands are never static also, something which bugs me big time in a lot of games)

Jeanna has the last laugh, again! No, really lol that sucks :/

And yeah, I agree about the cutscenes. But then again, SE always did have the best cutscenes, quality wise. Hard to imagine they were able to get this much out of the PSP. I actually kind of prefer the in-game cutscenes over the CGI ones honestly. Some of the characters just don't look right in CGI to me, like Sephiroth and Cloud for instance.
