Hyped games also get the most punishment and criticism, unlike something like Braid that comes along without much notice
This is why so many hate the Fable games in general

I don't know, those Fable games seem to have gone under the radar, especially the second one.

Ah, I'm a bit disapointed that Mirror's Edge didn't get a higher spot on this list. The basic mechanic does work pretty well.

But then again, i've been playing last year's games (Halo 3, Call of Duty 4) a whole lot more than this year's games.

User top 10s are pretty worthless anyhow. People mainly play the hyped games and play only a handful to begin with so the spectrum is skewed toward the hyped games.

[...]

Sales rule unless you play enough games to really give some informed comapre/contrast.
Spot on. Which is why I think you can basically remove the top 5 from any list such as this and look at the rest to make it more interesting. I'm not saying the top 5 aren't good, they are. It's just that they're predictable and boring because even people who just played 1 game this year will have played one of those and voted for it, regardless of whether another game on the list (or off) would've made him or her feel even better.

i agreee but not totally. because if this poll was done by the general public rather then a more hardcore based forum, the top 5 would be completly differant. its easy to think our top 5 is the boring one and the predictable one, but in reality its not, and its a pretty damn good top 5. its like we are in a little bubble, seperate form the majority of the gaming consumers.

if this was done by the general public let me show you the very sad but true top 5 (just me guessing, by no means offical.)

1. wii fit
2. fifa 09
3. need for speed
4. a 100th sequel to a popular game
5. a couple of the usual low quality movie tie ins

our top 5 is much better. the above is alot more boring and predictable

A list that includes "a 100th sequel" (aka--nothing--that could be Gears 2, or Fallout 3, or MGS4) and "a couple of the usual" is more predictable?! Come on now, you're not even trying. You could have at least listed actual games in your "guess."

I think a polling of the general gaming public would actually wind up looking pretty simular to what you see here. Just look at a large, relatively casual website's user picks. They're all over the place and it's the same stuff on every site.

I've been playing older games a lot myself.. but I sorta agree. Even though I haven't purchased any rhythm games this year, I'm sad there's none on the list. The fact that no one voted for RB2 because it rehashes Rock Band's mechanics doesn't seem very just when there's seven other sequels on the list.

not to mention for the first time ever, need for speed performed badly both critically and commercially, hell, the devs closed their doors becasue of it. so i doubt that'd be in the top 5 tbh. i think the list would be similar, but i think if the userbases for each console was fair certain games would have a better chance (LBP/MGS4) in getting higher places. but here its very one sided. 99% of people here own a 360, while few own a ps3.

doing a poll like this here is like asking GOTY in the 360 section of gametrailers...theres going to be an obvious leaning towards 360 titles...maybe not due to "fanboyism" but simply due to that fact they havnt played anything else.

And then there is the flip side is that in 2008 some of us bought consoles and our bias for 360 games would be more because they were more compelling to them than PS3 ones. e.g. Myself. I could have gotten a PS3 or Wii ... but when looking at the content I chose the 360 as the final purchase because the games I wanted weren't on the PS3. So platform bias based on ownership is partly related to software recognition, but also partly a product of software selecting platform purchase.

Anyhow, Gamersyde GotY is just that--Gamersyde, whatever that demographic will be. Even an objective panel of experienced game reviewers is going to disagree based on preference and appeal.

I think the solution's got everything to do with deliberately gravitating away from the conventional top 5 though. I mean even arranging "best" to "not so best" in a list of 10 entries based on this year's top games is rediculously impossible. This year has almost left a bad taste in my mouth from all the insane goodness, it's nearly to the point where I want something flawed and bitter for contrast.

GOTY seems to often wind up being some kind of vague statement about what games transcend the usual gameyness and stand out as an event or as a significant stride in not just gameplay but perhaps also perception. LBP is a good example of something that has altered our perception of what games can be like. This is all fun and good and a great topic of conversation, but then the picks are also so damn obvious.

Of COURSE LBP has altered our perception of what games can be like so of course it's gonna be up there. Of course MGS4 was one of the most important gaming events of the year and of course the cutscenes are gonna beam together in a cinematic experience, powered by the shared culture into a shuttle of glorious fan gospel worthy a GOTY mention. This all makes so much sense that you can't possibly complain when the top 5 scrolls by on your computer monitor. It never really had much to do with what game was the best or anything like that because they were all incredibly good, so for all intents and purposes these identical GOTY lists you see everywhere are the unquestionable truth. Those are, without a doubt, the games of the year.

I'm personally more interested in finding out what games people picked out of their own interest and which of those they enjoyed though, and when you move out of the obvious top 5 picks, I think you get closer to that.

Very good discussion guys keep it up :) I think I see where all of us are coming from and to be honest when the votes were counted and the top 5 games were exactly what everyone was predicting, It did feel kinda disappointing but at the end of the day it's what people liked.

May be next time we should a list of Top games no one has played in addition to this one. it's on those types of lists that little gems appear but then again there simply are TOO many games to play and it's so damn impossible both time and money-wise to play all of them and that's why if we want a proper list of top games that takes into account other indy or games no one got to play, we should look at sites lik Eurogamer ..... Their Top 50 Games list includes some very hidden little games!

This is where I get a little confused with lists like these. Are people voting for games that they enjoyed the most in the year, or are they voting for games which they think deserve the GOTY title for another reason. LBP is one that has come up a lot, because it is something new and unique, but I only played it for a couple of weeks. It ended up on my list and when I think about it, it probably shouldn't be there. I've had more fun playing something like COD:WAW MP, or Mirrors Edge. I kinda wish I could re-do my list. I think this is kinda what Simon was getting at but I just wanted to say this in response to your dissapointment about RB2. It wasn't on my list despite being one of the games I have played more than anything this year....

Theres actually one big game thats missing off the list, saints row 2 which i believe was worth some sort of mention particularly in the top 50. It's kind of a shame that GTA gets all of the acclaim when Saints Row makes the game much more sandbox like and is all the more fun for it, then again GTA is the brand and it does offer a more cinematic approach.

I liked this discussion though, i can see why people feel a predictable top10 is a bad thing, but the fact is that they are the games people are playing due to hype, reviews, being a sequel or whatever. Even going by sales data the top10 would look failry similar with the games jostling for position due to multiplatform etc.
I prefer a guage like this though, get a group of gamers together, get their opinions and total the scores, its a lot more fair than doin this on a console specific site or asking people in a game store. As was mentioned above, the top 10 would probably be NDS/Wii titles or your racer/sport games.
I mean gamersyde is one of the few places that you get a broad spectrum of console and pc owners, some of us are biased, some not so much, but it is the range of opinions that adds the validity, it all balances out.

I prefer my 360, i'll admit to that, but MGS4 would still probably be in my top 5 games of the year flawed as it was. LBP didn't appeal at all, i can see the novelty but thats it, from its announcement it looked like nothing but a level editor and we all know the issues with content control, yet there it stands in the top10 and I applaud it for reaching its audience and being recognised for that fact.

Yeah... it's certainly not the perfect image of what we really enjoyed most this year. I actually attempted to do that. That's why for example, I didn't vote for Gears 2 or GTA4. It's not because I don't think they deserve to be in the big picture, but I haven't really played or put much time into them yet. Likewise, if I actually owned GHWT or RB2 I imagine I would have listed them, but I can't say for sure.

Yeah but you can't just measure how much time you spend in a game either...that would screw the list up even worse :D

If that was the case my #1, Penumbra, would fall behind even shitty games like Spore and Fable 2 simply because it's short and 100% linear :P

GHWT surely does not deserve a place in the top 10 at any rate, the song list is garbage (maybe...one good song for every ten?) and the way they've simplified many of the tracks on hard is just baffling...it's so badly done. What are songs from Michael Jackson and the Beastie boys even doing on there? The music studio is a goddamn atrocity, im surprised that there are any songs on there at all. GH World tour sucks. GH2 is still the best one imo, even if the songs are covers the choses in music are so much better that it saves the game any day. Also the button patterns are way better in GH2.

I'd rather have "Beat It," which features an actual guitar hero and is an overall awesome song, over anything by Interpol though.

I don't think GH2's track list is really all that great. The fact that they're covers does impact the quality of the experience too. It just kills some of my favorite tracks. There's not a rhythm game out there with a set list that everyone is going to love through and through. If I just had to enjoy all of the music I couldn't enjoy the genre.

Ronsauce: yeah well, i'd take interpol over plastic angel in a guitar hero game as well, that doesn't make the first choice any better :D

What i mean is that many of the songs in GHWT are really boring to play because it's just mashing away at the damn chords over and over again. Playing a song like Dinosaur jr - feel the pain is not fun at all.

Yeah, I agree. I felt the same way about RB2's setlist in a lot cases. It's like they wanted to be all indie or something and didn't care about if the songs were necessarily a good fit for the game.

I still maintain that Beat It is awesome though :P

I think it's more that they wanted to put in songs that are popular with the crowd rather than what works in the context of the game. Stuff like Interpol and coldplay would never be in there otherwise. Feels like the whole GH phenomenon has become too main stream for it's own good.

But let's face it, most people playing the GH/RB games are the kind that don't give a crap about music generally (listening to you ipod a lot is not the same thing as loving music imo), and care even less about the songs in the game from a gameplay perspective. As long as it's their favorite tune they'll be happy.
