This is true...but I'm not putting too much stock into the conference demo at the moment. It didn't come across as the most cohesive presentation as it was.

Each ODST you play as will be different...a sniper, a heavy gunner etc. Maybe they just showed a less than subtle part of the game.

Halo 3: ODST is an usual outing for Bungie. An expansion pack that takes place before Halo 3, it's definitely going to offer something fresh for Halo fans.

OXM played the new Firefight mode at E3. This was the co-op mode for ODST announced during Microsoft's press conference - you're an ODST, and you and three others fight endless waves of enemies.

It's reminiscent of Gear of War 2's Horde mode, albeit not quite as frantic. Enemies arrived by drop ship (which guns the hell out of you when it comes in, so you have to hide from the turret) or seemingly from the side doors. You'll notice enemies show up without any visible drop ship around.

Advertisement:
You pound through that wave and the next one is announced. Each new round, voiced by the standard Halo voiceover guy, announces a new restriction. These restrictions stack up on the left-hand side of the HUD, making things progressively harder. One such restriction is "Enemies love to throw grenades", where... enemies tend to throw more grenades. Obviously.

Most of the enemies are plucked from familiar Halo lore - Elites, Brutes, Jackals and so on.

You can set maps to day or night. We played night to check out ODST's new visor enhancements. When it's on, enemies are highlighted with red outlines in the world, so you can see where they are. It still works even when they're partially obscured.

There are some invisible enemies that we had to turn on the visor to see - it highlighted them as yellow outlines, and after a few hits they're visible. A few more after that and they're dead.

When you die, you respawn in side room and just charge back out into action. There's a fixed number of lives but they reset for each wave. With Left 4 Dead's Survival mode and Gears of War 2's Horde mode, it seems that Halo 3: ODST's Firefight mode will join them as frantic slices of co-op blasting action when you don't have time for the full thing. And damn good it is too.

It also contains 2400 points worth of Map packs (3200 if you count heroic). That's $30-$40 already. Plus the Horde mode sounds great. I remember that being rumoured for Halo 2.
Ugh, that's just rationalizing their horrid price point. I'm still going to purchase this, but the $60 price tag is pretty indefensible if you ask me. At least we're getting access to the Reach beta as an incentive. That's a bigger selling point than the idea that its mutliplayer additions are worth some amount of space-bucks that we were somehow predestined to spend anyway!

Plus, I think you're counting maps I already own in that equation. Do I get a discount for having already pumped points into Halo 3? I don't think so.

It's not like just because it comes with additional MP content that it's out of the realms of what previously established expansions on other platforms have included anyway.

There's even a $99 "Spend More Money Edition!"

Didn't say it was the best deal in the world. It especially sucks if you have the maps already for sure.

It's more than just a 5 hour SP expansion. It's less than a full game. The price should be somewhere in the middle but as I won't pay RRP (here in the UK you should never have to if you're savvy) for it anyway I can't muster the outrage!

I know that's an alright jack attitude but being honest. I'm happy with what I'm getting for the moolah.

Since when did expansion just mean, "short addition to the campaign mode?"

Example: Call of Duty: United Offensive. This game included many new multiplayer maps (11!) for the original Call of Duty, three additional game modes, and a new 13 map campaign. I just have to hate how the industry has redefined what an expansion pack is.

There is absolutely no more content here than what you would find in a traditional expansion pack. It's just that traditional expansions have been replaced by premium downloadable content, and stand alone serial additions to games which don't offer any additional (and in most cases, less) value than the previous model.

It's a horrible price point, through and through. This should not cost more than $40, which seems like a fair inflation over the traditional price of $29.99 for expansions in the old-world where we paid $50 for complete games. That's more than fair.. especially considering the new $60 cost of entry is just a starter fee now.

How much does a game like Halo 3 cost... to get the same amount of content than you would out of a game from even the previous generation? Ugh.

Halo Reach is being done 100% by Bungie it seems. Major surprise there. I thought it was some Microsoft team with just some help from Bungie, but Bungie is all over Reach.

I would guess that means the MS internal Halo Studio is on the next-gen stuff.

Awesome!!! The Halo3 engine may has it's flaws, but it really provides incredible lighting effects.

My moderate disinterest for the game and distaste for the pricepoint aside, I do think the game is gorgeous looking. I've always though Halo 3 looked great(despite some weak animation and some of the poorest modeled human heads), and now that they've had more time with the engine, I'm sure I'll be pleased with the visuals.

The walkthroughs make it much clearer that this is something quite different from Halo 3. The night-time stuff looks great and the flashback mission structure is interesting. Firefight could be a big hit as well, especially the random structure of the waves and skulls.

Those videos were better than the conference presentation. Looks great actually. Can't wait and the FireFight mode is something I've always wanted in a Halo game. Hopefully it's got a lot of waves and a good variety of maps.

The open plan area is pretty large as well by the looks of it.

Man, those visuals are actually quite gorgeous. I probably won't buy ODST because of the other games coming out this year, but it looks great to me -- and that's coming from someone who isn't exactly a Halo fanatic.

Bungie seems to be knee deep with Halo projects, their latest announcement was regarding Halo:Reach. Barring a brief teaser trailer not too much is know about the project and its relation to a novel set in the universe “Halo: The Fall of Reach ,“which chronicles the life and times of the Spartan race before the beginning of the war with the Covenant. Shane Kim confirms that the game is indeed a prequel and witnesses the origins of the epic.

VB: Will Halo Reach follow the story of the first novel? (The Fall of Reach).

SK: You’ll have to wait and see. There is an opportunity to tell the prequel to Halo. People are interested now they see how the trilogy of Halo ended. Now they can see how it began. The Halo universe is very rich and there are a lot of stories to tell.
Reach is going to be an FPS i hear also.

Open explorable city and clue searching alone make the experience very different. Obviously the underlining combat will be pretty much the same.
