Oh boy GTA4 already looks much better than Saints Row... but of course people are going to pull a Forza Motorsport 2 vs PGR3 rubbish comparison out their ass all the way up until GTA's release.

The starting point is never going to be the same for a generation leap, regardless of what platform it started on. You could compare it to GTA on PC though (which is much better than the PS2 version)--it's still a giant leap in quality.

Wow, I go away for a few hours and come back to 16 pages of posts. I just want to say, that I am not going to read all of this - besides, fully half of it (from what I can see so far) are people trying to rip GTA4 a new one. If it is all the same, I'd rather not have to wade through all the rubbish just so that I can read the more constructive opinions out there.

Anyway, I just stopped by to chime in on another subject that is on the minds of GTA fans tonight: is the game in NYC or Liberty City. This is a debate that seems to be raging across several forums after viewing the GTA4 teaser. I saw a post on the Gamers Republic forums where a guy pretty convincingly argues that it is in Liberty City. After reading his post, I an pretty convinced that it is too. As for the video itself. It looked spot on awesome. Much better than I was honestly expecting Rockstar to do. The colors kickass as does the soft shadowing and the HDR. True the textures could use some work done to them, but considering the size of the game and the draw distance and the unbelievable level of detail, the textures did not turn out as bad as they could have been. This is definitely a leap forward, even beyond the likes of Saints Row and Crackdown.

October 16th cannot get here fast enough.

Seems to be Liberty City to me, it's referenced on the police boats at the ferry dock (which looks exactly like the Hoboken ferry dock down the street from my apartment), by the Liberteen, and the big ship in the harbor...

Liberty City is based off New York City, so it could really go either way in how you look at it. But yea, in game, it's Liberty City.

Well, that's the way I see it. But I think the new look of the game has everyone (including at least one IGN editor) thinking that it is NYC. One theory that I keep hearing is that NYC and Liberty City will both be in the game and they are both in the same state.

I highly doubt that, but you have people out there spreading the theory around.

Well GTA has never had the actual city in the game, it's always a fictional version of the city. So I doubt they would do that. Actually, I've only played GTAIII and up, so I can't comment on the locations of the previous versions.

There are references to Liberty City in the trailer anyway though..and they show what looks like the Brooklyn bridge, the Statue of Liberty (which is technically in Jersey) and what look like the Hoboken ferry docks to me. So I guess Liberty City is just a mix of the NYC and it's surrounding areas, just like San Andreas is a mix of several areas on the west coast.

I don't care what anyone says, I will buy this game no matter what.. Just like Halo3 etc it's simply a must-buy game if you call yourself a gamer and own a Xbox 360..

Tbh this trailer didn't show to much.. But I don't care, it looks nice, and I'm a sucker for sandbox games like GTA, SR, Crackdown etc anyway.. GTA-IV will own, no doubt in my mind!

I'm impressed people are already talking about Halo 3 visually when nobody on this entire board has yet to see what the singleplayer actually looks like hahahah.

Then again on this forum alpha or pre-alpha of a multiplayer build is as good as finished :)

Also this trailer shows me EXACTLY why sandbox games like this need a main character with some sort of character :) I'm already tempted to play and find out more about this guy's story which is something I wasn't remotely interested in doing with Saints Row.
