2007-06-14 06:21:00 IGN (COD4 greater graphical feat than Gears of War)

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/796/796052p1.html

It's fair to say that what we saw of Call of Duty 4 was a greater graphical feat than Epic's Gears of War.
At one point you may step into a barn, look up and see beams of sunlight breaking in through the cracks. You'll see dust particles in the air, though that's not nearly as impressive as the smoke trail from a rocket launcher. The sun can rise or set during a level with realistic lighting effects so that the transition from dusk to dawn appears natural. There's impressive damage modeling on derelict cars; you can waste some bullets shooting out tires or toss a grenade and blow the doors off. Walk past a hill of burning trash and you'll see not only smoke, but debris floating in the air. The stunning backgrounds are actually matte paintings, just as would be used in a movie.

As for the characters, each has full self-shadowing and a level of detail never-before-seen in Call of Duty. Get close to a soldier and you can actually read the time on his watch. Once you know it's not time for bacon and eggs, you can cast your eyes on the uniform and its rich level of detail. Breathe down the neck of a U.S. Marine and you will see realistic-looking flesh. You might even see them sweat.

More impressive is that all of this works in a frantic environment. The chaos of modern warfare has AI Marines screaming ooh-rah as gunfire echoes through the ruins of a Middle Eastern city. There are explosions left and right, enemies around every corner, helicopters spinning out of control and crashing in a fiery wreck. And all of it happens at 60 frames per second.

In terms of community, Modern Warfare will introduce a Halo-style party system that will make playing with your friends a lot easier. Best of all, the multiplayer graphics look as good as the single-player. There's no sacrifice in graphical quality that we could see, and it's quite possibly the prettiest multiplayer gameplay that we've ever seen.

The 60FPS bit is true, they said anything that makes it drop gets the chop. The 1080p bit is doubtful though, most likely it was just the resolution they demoed it in.

Via TeamXbox... similar news.

There's no doubt in our mind that Call of Duty 4 is by far the best-looking first-person shooter on the Xbox 360. The game features some truly stunning lighting effects, from the lightning we mentioned above to "god rays" streaming through the bullet holes in the walls of buildings. All of the character models look impressive too, from the fabric on their uniforms to the nifty self-shadowing effect. We had a chance for a nice, slow walkthrough of a village in Azerbaijian, where we noticed incredibly realistic foliage and some of the the best particle-based cloud and smoke effects we've ever seen. Amazingly, the game is almost locked in at a buttery-smooth 60 frame per second, and the multiplayer looks almost as good as the single-player action.

AND, yay! Party system from a third party... remember how COD2 & 3 didn't have true lobbies? I'm hoping this one does.

I must admit that here, 60fps look really smooth, though usually i do not notice it.

And no excuses concerning the disparity between the single and multi.. so far so good. Anyone who even thinks they like shooters is going to need to play this game.

I'm not too concerned w/ the match making, since I'm gonna play it on Windows, but that is great news for console gamers. Sounds like they're paying a lot more attention to the online mode this time around.

I already assumed that the PC version won't have match making.. I assume the PS3 version probably will at least have a party system. Far less of an issue on the PC.
