Microsoft and Epic announced today that they would release a brand new map pack for Gears of War as soon as Thursday, for 800 MS points (free in september). The new maps are called Bullet Marsh, Garden, Process and Subway, and are visible inside.

I can go on and on, but you really need to play this visual and visceral masterpiece for yourself. When you do, you'll find plenty of minor problems, just like I did...but you can always find reasons not to give a game a 10.
And while I was playing Gears of War, all I kept running into was reasons to give it a 10.

The Bad: Story could have been a bit more fleshed out; difficulty could have used some slight tuning.

Gears of War is a must-have game, pure and simple. Epic has effectively created a new gaming universe, and the rich story of planet Sera holds its own with the likes of Hyrule, City 17 and the Mushroom-friggin'-Kingdom. A game so gorgeous, both visually and audibly, that is this fun to play comes along only a handful of times a console generation.
There is a healthy learning curve to the cover system, but those who master it will find Epic's twisting and turning and rolling an exciting change-up in the shooter genre, a blend of fast-arcade action and basic, tactical maneuvering. The Insane difficulty level gives Gears legs months after you've finished the relatively-short campaign, and even with a friend it is an impossible, irresistible challenge. Versus is a one-trick pony, consisting of a team deathmatch with three basic variations, but damn, that mode is fun. Downloadable content is on the way, says Epic, but as it stands today, we are left wanting more. Bottom line: Gears of War is the special kind of game that makes you feel like a kid again, a sadistic little bastard obsessed with gore and chainsaws.

Mark Rein of Epic says here that Epic owns GoW 100%, not MS.. But since MS is the publisher the chance of seeing this game on a Sony console is virtually 0..
Those Epic forums are pretty cool btw, both CliffyB and Mark Rein post there a lot.. Mark Rein is busy responding to the reviews atm, I just love how vocal he is.. :)

Right having read a couple of the reviews and having played this a while ago, I shall make one thing very clear. Casual is VERY easy for anyone experienced with shooters. It's obvious they've done this to make the game accessible and fair play to them for it. However, unlike a magazine review, your objective is not to get through the campaign as quickly as possible to write about it :-)
So , I strongly urge everyone starting out to set the difficulty to Hardcore unless you are really really really bad with shooters :-) You will thank me for it in the end, believe me :)
Though I've played it already, I'm holding off posting impressions until I've been through it on hardcore. Plus I won't get it till the 17th unless Woolworths do the business for us again :D

Thxs for the tip deftangel, I will play the game at hardcore from the beginning.. Even though I'm not really that good with shooters on a console because I'm a pure old-skool PC FPS player myself.. But that means I do understand how to play these games, I just suck with the aim on a stick, that's all.. But I'll manage, and if I can't get thru a certain part I can always get a friend in co-op to help me thru.. :)
GoW is a game where I'm willing to set aside my objections of playing a shooter on a console.. But since it's Xbox 360 exclusive I don't have a lot of choice either offcourse.. Not playing this game is not an option, lol!! :)

GoW is a game where I'm willing to set aside my objections of playing a shooter on a console.. But since it's Xbox 360 exclusive I don't have a lot of choice either offcourse.. Not playing this game is not an option, lol!! :)
That said, the lack of a precision control isn't really a factor, i.e. you wouldn't miss a mouse or neccessairly do much better with one. Sure, headshots count more but enemies take multiple shots to go down and a lot of the game is firing from behind cover, sometimes blindly. Though you will increasingly use the zoom function and aim with a reticule, there are times when you won't even have one.
And you're right, a friend can jump in over live at any point during your single player game :)

I usually start playing games on hard difficulty level and optionally switch down after first level when the game is too hard. Nowadays games are usually very simple on normal difficulty level.

I'm sure they'll do everything they can to keep the franchise on 360 and Vista only, though.
I would be pissed with MS if they bring it to the PC, consoles need exclusive content, if every game they develop is going to be on the PC as well it kind of negates the point of having a 360, other than the price difference of course.
Seems like it's getting pretty good scores all round, might have to get this after all, just to see what the fuss is about :P
