Really?

Did you play it?
Yes.

The multi-player beta.

And I was talking about in terms of features.

"really? did you play it?" - that's so tiring, can't you come up with something new?

Quotes:

In the gloom of the base, Halo 3 doesn't actually look all that different from its predecessors -- sure, the Marines are a lot less blocky, but it's difficult to appreciate the game's visual enhancements in pitch darkness. Outside, though, it's a different story, and there's no question that Bungie is pushing the 360 hardware to create a damn good looking game. The fears left by the beta are clearly unfounded.

Many of Halo 3's most impressive effects are subtle, such as its use of HDR (high dynamic range) lighting to mimic the mechanics of the human eye -- go from darkness to sunlight and Master Chief's vision takes a moment to adjust to the glare. And unlike many next gen games, it's remarkably un-shiny; although metallic objects reflect light, matte surfaces like dirt and wood and stone are as dull as you'd expect.

Dull doesn't mean ugly in this case, though; the road to Tsavo highway is gorgeous, a path of reddish earth sprinkled with patches of grass and dappled with sun and shade from the trees lining the way. It's a straightforward path, surrounded on either side by rock, but more interesting is the massive ring-shaped wreckage strewn along the route. Your marine companions' chatter reveals this to be the New Mombasa orbital elevator, which was destroyed early in Halo 2 when the Prophet of Regret made a low-orbit hyperspace jump that annihilated the city. Now the wreckage stretches a thousand kilometers across the savannah, seemingly pointing the way to the Covenant occupying forces.

brute choppers As the name suggests, the Chopper resembles a motorcycle. And in a moment of dangerous literal-mindedness, it also has the ability to chop things into tiny pieces with its massive, bladed front wheels. The Chopper doesn't offer much in the way of cover for its driver, essentially being a gigantic wheel with an open seat on the back, but it's fast and incredibly deadly -- let one smash into the driver's side of your Warthog and you're likely to have a very dead Master Chief on your hands. Not that it needs to hit you to kill; it also sports a high-powered blaster that can be aimed like the Ghost's cannon.

On the other hand, should you manage to survive long enough to kill a Chopper driver -- no small order, given how much damage Brutes can soak up -- it's a damn fine ride.

** rest here, some spoilers..

Halo just craped on every single game in existence.

....

This game, in my opinion, by far - simply rapes all other games.
Oookay that's a bit overstated.

Halo 3 is looking extremely packed beyond belief with stuff.

Forge, 4 player co-op, video editor, the popular multi, all 4 players can be as far as a mile away from eachother.

Epic singleplayer story and Master Chief is going to die :(

After reading the new EGM article, I must say I am a little disappointed in Forge. It sounds interesting, but it's not a real map editor.. which is a bummer. I can't help but wonder if it's not to avoid damaging the image of premium content. A lame reason for the lack of a real editor, but it seems entirely likely to me.

Otherwise, good article, lots of new content.. and indeed.. this looks like it's turning out to be the console shooter to beat once again. Bungie sure knows their audience.

UnrealEd says hi.

EDIT: Let me make that last statement a little more clear. I believe that you're more or less right; as far as the out of the box experience goes.. but if we include stuff like Forge (which isn't really a full featured level editor) then I think it's fair to count stuff like UnrealScript/UnrealEd as features, in which case the possibilities are basically endless. If we're allowed to include user created content into the equation, then we have total conversions, and essentially new games all together.. and then HL2/UT3 have the upper hand once again.

So, as an all inclusive package, I think it is indeed feature packed. But with a little perspective it's not too hard to see where the competition comes close and in some cases exceeds that value all together.

Also, from the perspective of console gaming, I do believe Orange box is comparable when it comes to overall content/value.. perhaps even going beyond what we're getting here.

Not from where I'm sitting. I can't think of another game that offers everything Halo 3 is offering.

Even Crysis lacks some of those featues. (Of course it destroys in graphics)

Probably not the thread for a lengthy dialogue on this issue (although the zealous statements do call for a bit of relativity), regardless of how one weighs value, getting a 16-20 hour SP mission that has won GotY (and still looks great and has excellent animation) that runs at 60fps, plus two 6 hour expansions that are really packed in terms of content and pacing, a revolutionary puzzle game weighing in at 5 hours, and then a sequal to one of the best online games ever in Team Fortress 2... that is like 35 hours of single player bliss and then who knows how many MP hours (IGN is already saying it could be the best online game of the year)... yeah, there is a ton of value there.

Overall this is an exciting trend: SP games have been getting shorter and shorter, so getting some games with heft SP and MP in a single package is a great value. It looks like it will be hard to lose in value in either game if you are a fan of shooters.

The fans have spoken. Concerning the graphics of the Halo 3 Beta: "There's so many little effects and things going on that make this game pretty much 2nd only to Gears at the moment."

That isn't my point. Not even HL2, with its expansion packs offers the same freedom of gameplay. You can't fly up in HL2 and rain death from above while a huge battle takes place.

I'll admit that the Orange box is going to be fantastic, I'm going to play it. I just don't see how the gameplay offered matches that of Halo 3.

Same goes for multi-players. As far as I know there's no air combat in TF2.

If you list features side by side, I don't think anything really compares to Halo 3.

Oh I'd say there are definitely shooters with more varied gameplay (just.. maybe not on consoles), but then we're getting into another territory all together really. It's gameplay and feature set are two different issues really.

If we're just talking about variety in gameplay, I think 2005's BF2 still trumps pretty much everything out of the box. But now we're talking about a multiplayer only title.. so I don't think it's really proper to compare the two.

I agree, and I think I also distinctly pointed out that I was talking about consoles. And only mentioned that it was mostly true as far as PC titles go except for a few.

I also mentioned single player as feature, along with 4 player co-op.

I don't make a real distinction between gameplay "variety" and features.

All I see are gameplay features. If a game offers camera support, that's a gameplay feature.

If the game has huge free roaming environments, that's a gameplay feature.

And so when I compare Halo 3 most other games, I don't think the term "rape" is too strong at all.
