Bomberman should forever be 1-hit-kill.

if they wanted they could have kept the original formula and still made it look good. it doesn't need this dark fps world setting to have better graphics and effects.
As for the new look, who cares. Are we so superficial that the new look of the game is going to put us off of what has been one of the best gaming franchises for the last 20 years?
The way I see it, the Bomberman that I know and love is still buried under the new exterior. As long as I can blow your ass up, then I am pretty much set. The new look and the new gameplay mode is a very smart move on the part of the developer to introduce newer players, all of whom who would probably completely overlook the game, into picking it up and giving it a try. No doubt, once all these newbies are hooked, they too will stop caring about the way a Bomberman game looks as long as the thrill the series is famous for is present.
Besides, had they kept the look of the game the way it has always looked, then they'd be stuck having to sell it as a Live Arcade game for $5 as opposed to a full-blown X360 title for $40.
As for the lifebar thing. Good. That just makes newer players weaker than guys like me who have been strategizing Bomberman games for almost 20 years. They'll be depending upon their lifebars as a crutch which will slow their gameplay. Meanwhile, I'll be playing Bomberman like I'm Genghis Khan and wiping the walls with them. These newbies with their fancy lifebars will go a long way to improving my online Bomberman stats. Bring'em on!!!
When you make the cutesy putesy bomberman into a blood oozing cyborg that blows bodyparts across the screen, the female unit will be alienated.
This is clearly a mecha lovin' macho man's bomberman. BOO.
Bomberman on the DC was really fun, I have doubts about this one.
edit: And oh yes, they fooled me.. in NO WAY does this game look like a full 40 bucks worth. Looks like a past gen game and with such generic and repetitive textures should easily fit in the 64MB allowed for arcade titles (esp with todays texture and audio compression). Just look at the closeup of the droid, it's like a highschool reunion for class of 97. Flat texture, 8bit texture, intersecting polygon, mirrored mesh and bilinear are all present and havent aged at all.
I no longer have doubts, now I know this game will BOMB hard.. pun intended.
