The japanese always had the best character designs, and that won't change. They have big personalities. Western characters are always, well, mostly, very stiff. I always prefered the way japanese create their games, except some exeptions ^^

Duno where you've been but FF has been appealing to the whole gaming world since FF7, duno why Japanese devs need to change their style to appeal to the west when westeen devs don't for them.
It realy makes me wonder why guys have such a big problem with metrosexual character designs, perhaps its comes from an insecurity ... ?
yeah, Im not too bothered...I mean in games people look like that but can have wildly different personalities...

These type of characters is what makes final fantasy great, its what draws you in..
you dont want some big ol Hulk guy picking his nose and flicking his bugers at the enemy for 100 points of damage do you?
and plus.... a tortured/ sensative guy fits better in cut scenes with females... it makes you feel more of their pain, love for the female character..

I know you were trying to prove a point and all but western character design is not that limited. Just look at some of the top games in the West such as Gordan Freeman(Half Life), Commander Sheppard(no matter if you use the default or not), Bioshocks protagonist, Altiar(assassins creed), Johanna Dark and countless games past and to come just look at this sites main page. I love Japanese character design, I just hate that you had to attack Eastern character design to express that.

These guys are Maya masters... i have all the tools but cannot do the quarter of the third of a hundredth of what they do in CG (i can do photo realistic interiors, but not people)

And hell, nobody is saying that all characters need to be big and hypermasculine...there is a decent amount of middle ground between pretty-boy and he-man.
So what about characters like Cid, Barret(FF7), Auron(FF10), Basch(FF12), I agree there is a middle group its just many of you don't see it.
Japanese main playable characteres run on generic imo. Also androgyny is just FF through and through

Haha Splicer, I don't think he means that. I think he just means, don't make them look like metrosexuals straight off the gay-wagon. Least make them semi-casual, no-one besides sexually confused teens want to play as a protagonist who is borderline fire-island regardless of the game.

All FF characters don't tend to look alike. Cloud, Squall ,Zidane, and Tidus DO NOT look alike.
Well if looking like they all shop at the same Banana Republic store, yes, they all looked alike - 7 is the exception.
And though they may be trying to appeal to the Japanese market and all non-asian countries are second, there is no reason to have all the strong Americanized aspects to the characters, they should be asian. They've always been based strongly off of American pop-culture, only with a gay-asian-twist.
Thus the reason for FF's drop in interest to a lot of (straight) gamers.
America has a pop culture ? why is it that everything is America this America that, there are other countries besides America in this world, just because FF charcters are generally caucasian doesn't make them American.
I sometimes wonder if living in America is live living in a big box, they don't seem to aknowledge the rest of the world very much.
