Final Fantasy Versus XIII also gets 6 pages scanned, and it also looks really great. Now all that remains is to know which (if any?) images are realtime.

Formless: this is of course a subjective topic, i cant tell you what to think. But my opinion is that the adventures square takes us on are pretty shabby. Xenogears is nothing but a world record attempt at most references to Nietzsche and Religion with some big ass robots thrown in the mix, FF7 is just plain confusing (which some people obviously confuse with deep and enigmatic) and i'm not even going to start talking about how "last minute" half of the story of FF8 feels like to me. But like said, it's subjective, my opinion on the matter is not an absolute truth.

Now i agree that video games as a medium is farm from optimal when it comes to relaying a solid story (at least by traditional means) but i'm still convinced that Skaguchi and friends just aren't that brilliant when it comes to writing.

It would be interesting to know how long these games took to write though.
FF7 isn't really confusing at all, its just bizarre, the majority of JRPG's go this way towards the end (SO3 anyone ?), just because its not believable doesn't make a steaming pile of crap, like you say it comes down to personal taste, but at the end of the day these games are set in fantasy worlds and fantasy world by default don't really make much sense and are rarely believable.

Regardless FF games provide a better story than the majority of western games IMO, this shouldn't be about whether a game provides a better story than a well writen novel as thats just absurd, a game should never be in the same league.

JRPG's much like mangas and animes are written with teenage boys in mind and therefore don't need to be deep they just need to make sense and remain entertaining.

Barf 2 years for a game is hardly rushed, SE have just become obessed about production quality.
In fact you can say that prior FFX all the FFs were rushed for the domestic market :P
Yet IMO FF 7,8 and 9 remain the best in the franchise.

Well, it is not my opinion the games were rushed on domestic market, but the developers'. They had deadline constraints and that's understandable.

less than 2 years for such big scale games, this is no small feat.
Their team grows and grows but the development times were short.

I've only been involved in smaller projects, but still, 2 years that goes by pretty fast...

ME took less than 2 years didn't it ?

Blue Dragon was less than 2 years, obviously its hard to say when preproduction occurs as many games can be in the pipelines for years prior to being developed.

Yep preproduction and already built assets

In the mass effect forums, bioware said in mid 2006 that it was 2-2.5 years in prod, that makes 3.5-4 years at release, but conceptual art started at the end of Kotor, so that s quite a long time ago.

http://masseffect.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.htm...

I don't now about Blue Dragon, but yes, it felt like it didn't take much more than 2 years.

Jolli: the please give me a quick, clear rundown of the end of FF7. Is cloud really a clone? What the feck is up with Tifa having memories of cloud when obviously he was never there? What is that shit when Colud is turned retarded and you have to walk through his memories, which hence to all being made up by Tifa should alo not be there? And Hojo, why te f**k would Hojo tur into a monster at the end there? And since i didn't play any spinoffs, wtf is up with Vincent, how does he fit in to it?

It was a long time ago since i played, back in 99 or 00 so i bet there's weirdness i've just repressed or something :D

Cloud isn't a clone hes someone who was injected with jenova cells, the part where Tifa remembers him from her childhood is real.

Cloud is at nebilheim as a solider, he never became a First Class Solider though that was Zak, Clouds memories become mixed up or lost when he was experimented on (im not sure which), Hojo deems him as a failed experiment though.

Hojo turns in the monster by injecting himself with Jenova cells, Vincent is an ex Turk.

Cloud is just injected with Jenova cells and Zack's memories. This is all part of Hojo's experiment to create First Class Soldiers, and also to substitute Zack (?)

Anyway, back to the topic..

SQUARE-ENIX usually takes their time to make a game (a quality one). They don't rush their games out just so they could make money out of unfinished and bugged products. It's no doubt that SE is one of the best RPG game company, which is why they're doing so well in the game industry.

Also, as for Mass Effect, they're using UNREAL®3 engine. They don't need time to build a new engine and they can go directly into designing the game. Well, although they'll still need to modify that engine, it's still faster than building a new one. The same goes to Blue Dragon too.

Blue Dragon used a custom made engine, perhaps you were thinking of Lost Odyssey.

No matter what some people here say, I really like the FF stories (except for FFXII which was trash and FFXI which I haven't played). And I'm a girl and 25 years old. Yeah, I read literature, but it can't be compared to video games. And if you think J-rpgs are lacking good stories, you should take a look at teen-books like the Twilight series, which is seriously overrated. Compared to that, J-rpgs are 1000000 times better.

Anyway, FFVersusXIII looks really awesome, the characters look more interesting to me than the FFXIII charas and the story as well. Too bad it comes out after FFXIII. :( Thank god there are no more girly main charas like Vaan, Noctis and that dude from XIII look good. Hope to never again see a Vaan-similar male chara. *shiver* Looking forward to VersusXIII... *waits*
