PS3

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is almost there now, but Sony keeps releasing new and for the most part amazing looking screens just to keep us hyped. This one can't be released soon enough.

Outside car models, which are awesome, the whole rest of the imaginery is terrible. Low res textures / low poly objects everywhere. The inside view in pic 3 is also terribly average.

For a game so hyped for its graphical awe (and no car damage) this is very dissapointing. I hope it's just a bad selection of screenshots.

Theres one thing that makes me sick: The cars just don't fit in the environment and so the total package is screwed!!
It looks like cars drivin on papier-mâché roads, and the trees look like skipjacks.
And please dont ruin the garage with garbage-people...
oh dear, why?

BTW still looks better than pgr4 which doesn't have self-shadowing...

Well, it's looking like a mortal game as it always has been. Great in places but a far cry from the bullshots they keep showing year in and year out.
amen!

Heh I thought the folks at Polyphony were supposed to know their cars. Picture 4 shows what appears to be an Aston Martin but the label says Honda Integra Type R '04.

(I know it says Aston Ma... on the other side of the screen. I just thought it was interesting that it showed the Honda comment as well.)

The only impressive feat I can see in "Real-Time" parts, are the use of HDR lighting to give the sunny feel... as other games like Ninja Gaiden 2 and DMC4.

Photomode looks great but in-game doesn't look that great at all probably just as good as Forza 2. Just look at picture 2.

Car Models in the menus = amazing
Cockpit view = fantastic
Lighting = pretty great
In-game environments = PS2 (seriously the tree cards and low poly terrain are an embarrasment for any next-gen game. Guess they had to sacrifice something so the game can be in 1080p and satisfy Sony's FullHD marketing drivel.)

These screenies do look amazing!. I have downloaded Prologue from the Japanese store, but it plays like sh1t !. It`s soooo boring that it hurts!.

I know that the final game will play better, but honestly, Polyphony need to do something seriously good for me to buy this. I was so stoked for the game, but after Prologue, I kinda got put off a bit.

If Forza can do damage models, then why the hell can`t these guys?. I know that GT is all about beauty, but come on...........seriously !?!.

Anyways, if Sony are reading this, then I have to say that any hope of me still picking up the final game on launch day will hinge soley on the release of the Dual Shock 3. In other words, "No Dual Shock 3, no game for me!".

Some of the pics look impressive but the actual in game ones do not look very good at all, I would even say they look poor. It's like some are in menus and photo modes with really great effects and then once in game everything is downscaled.

First off, that's a split screen shot. GT5P blows Forza 2 out of the water graphically. It's like the difference between Xbox 1 and Xbox 360.

If you think this game looks poor, then you either need new glasses or you need to stop being such a fanboy. The game is the best looking racing game, period.

I agree and disagree with many of you here.

Car models are amazing, but environments are all over the place. Reflections too, and in-game looks pretty ugly/average.

I think it is too hard to say which looks better, PGR4 or GT5/HD/P/Whatever.

In PGR you have amazing.....CONSISTENT visuals, incredible weather effects which has TONS of implications for graphics, different lighting conditions, incredible reflections etc.

On GT5 you have amazing car models (even better than PGR), 16 of them on track, great lighting with a photoreal touch, good reflections,.......but then you have jagged edges(more than PGR), horrible textures in some places, no weather effects, and an overall inconsistency in the graphics.

So I think there is a balance and depending on what you value more you'd say x or y looks better.

To be honest I like consistency, and PGR has that, but even then I also like amazing car models and GT5 has that.

Also, let's take into account how long these people have been developing this game. Those car models don't come at a low price, it takes time to get them that detailed. While PD has yet to bring a complete racing game this generation, Bizarre has already made two of them, released long time ago, with PGR4 offering HUGE amounts of content. Perhaps if BC had all that time they could have done even better, and w/ damage unlike GT.

BTW on GT, I've yet to see decent particles(smoke), and it seems they are also inconsistent with gameplay which I truly hate. (joke mode, AKA "drift" mode).

Almost anything now looks better than FM2, in fact, when it came out it already looked outdated, even the MotoGP at that time looked considerably better. FM2 is a mess in the graphics side, a complete mess.

I don't think anyone would claim Forza 2 looks better, but if the game does look like that second shot in motion, I'd have to say GT5 does indeed look pretty similar, but it is likely that it lost a lot of the nice effects due to split screen.

But compare it to PGR4 on the otherhand, and I'd think you'd have a much tougher time saying which looks better. PGR4 easily has the better environments, but I'd say GT5 does have the nicer looking car models, however it lacks any kind of damage or weather effects. In PGR4 cars get dirty, bashed up, covered in rain snow and whatever else.

PGR3 looked better than Forza 2 as well. So let's ignore that point if you all agree.

I own both PGR4 and GT5P (Japanese), so I can comment on these as I see them. As far as graphics alone, PGR4 upped the resolution to 720p from 640p or whatever it had been at. However they dropped the nice HDR effect.

The London environment in GT5P is nearly as good, if not better than PGR4's London. PGR4 will stream in some higher resolution textures while idle, but the lightmaps in GT5P's London are better. In GT5P JPN you're limited to 12 cars max on the London track instead of 16, and the frame rate does chop up more. Still 12 cars at twice the polygonal count (LOD has to be considered though), usually twice the framerate, and 50%-100% higher resolution (debatable points depending on who you talk to). PGR4 has a nice motion blur effect in gameplay, which GT5P JPN lacks.

The overall visual impression I get when playing PGR4 and GT5P on the London tracks is that GT5P is WAY better looking.

I understand many have not played GT5P, but at least more of you will soon enough. I don't really see it as a debatable point, having played both now.

i tell you how the backgrounds are done.

they took photos of 4/5 angles (sides and top) they cut it out in photoshop (this isnt even necessary) then they make a plane in the 3d program, they add alot of subdivisions...then the extract and extrude the plane to make it sort of 3D...youre actually modelling a texture in some sense, then i guess they added a good normal map for fine detail and voila photo realistic backgrounds..

I use this method to do my enviremonts too

Really? What crap? Your not being a fanboy yourself with that comment? Xbox 1 to Xbox 360?

Please go look again.

Forza 2 was ugly, in the sense that it didn't feel like a true next gen game in graphical terms. But that certainly didn't stop me from enjoying the racing element of the game. And while PGR4 is certainly a damn sight more pretty, it doesn't have nearly the same kind of lifespan as Forza. My gut feeling with Prologue is that it'll straddle somewhere in the middle.

Meanwhile, can anyone clarify what the situation with damage to car? Not looking for something on the scale of Burnout obviously, but something akin to Forza 2 would be nice!

Why is everyone so impressed with this? I think it looks pretty average. Poor textures, jaggies everywhere, and a couple downright bad environments. Sure, the car models are great, but is it really worth sacrificing all of that other detail?

I think someone has to say it, it looks downright shitty.

If you guys want to cast stones in me/ban me whatever .. go ahead .. but it's true... it looks very much awful, but GT3 wasn't really that much impressive either .. GT4 was .. so I'm going to wait for PolyPhony's next thing.
