Sony America releases five so-called screenshots of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. If what is shown in these images is running in real-time on anything else than photoshop, I'll be ready to eat a tree.

To anyone who thinks the close-up characters are real, can you tell me why Sakura and Sasuke would have aliasing while Naruto and Kakashi are completely smooth? It just doesn't work that way.

'cause the cell shading is based on drawing the contour of the 3D model... if the model is near the camera it's drawn with more detail and looks smoother, but it the model is far away from the camera when the contour is drawn with less details, and looks pixelated with jaggies...

If you look closer the first image, tha jaggies from sakura arms, are just the same as the jaggies from naruto (like the one in the bandana with the hair.)

ROFL!!!
I can't belive people actually think these are in-game. Shame on you for being so gullable.
It's pretty obvious they have taken in-game backgrounds and added photoshopped characters to try and draw some attention to this game.
The most noticable is screenshot 1 where Sakura and Sasuke are possibily in-game model's where as Naruto and Kakashi look like 2D artwork images.
Shame on Sony. Surely they know by now that we want in-game footage from their products rather than CG trailers and the like...

I don't understand why PS3 or 360 can't achieve this level of graphics? Isn't this supposed to be the next-generation. I don't know very much about programming, but i don't see why these consoles are unable to produce something like the ones in the shots? Are they just not strong enough???

It's not that the models are too high poly or anything that makes me question the graphics, but rather the way the outlines and such look. Just look at pic 4, for instance. How the feck can the engine determine where to draw black lines and where not to (folds in clothes, collar. Plus the zipper looks like it's shoddily drawn...either that or the texture artist sucks donkey nuts)?

To me the cell shading effect looks too good to be true. I mean, i would be happy if it was for real, cause that would be super sweet (naruto sucks, but the possibilities...oh man!) but i just can't believe it until i see it in motion.

Here's the original Nautoro on the 360 - which looks pretty much the same to me - so I'm sure this level of graphics isn't fake

1and 3 look like they could be ingame.

2,4,5 would be cut-scene from the game only because in these pics the clothes are much richer in colour, 1 and 3 look more washed-out.
wind waker had this NPR look to it, and that was on the cube and even now looks good, so I wouldn't dismiss all the pics as " obviously " not ingame.

slightly of topic but if these are ingame then capcom, restart SF4 and make it look like Naruto on PS3......please capcom.

they's no doubt the makers of this game where inspired by the naruto rise of ninja game. sure they've worked on previous ones but in terms of presentation and open free world game i don't think they bothered and when they saw the 360 version they where pushed to deliver something of the same magnituted

On a side note, people need to realize NEXT GEN, doesn't mean shit should be looking real or exactly the same as an animated show as if someone drew the whole goddamn game
SYSTEMS STILL HAVE LIMITS.

So tired of hearing "next gen" this or next gen that. Give it a rest people.

huh, whats with you ppl and not believing this is real time, all because it looks better then naruto 360? well guess what, even though that game produced some nice visuals, its models and feel where completely wrong, any of the ps2 games by c2 have better looking models then that game.

And then there is the idolmaster, which has better cellshading then naruto 360, ubisoft montreal did a good job, but c2 are veterans at what they do, with 5 games alone on the ps2.
just look at this only 2 min 24s, http://youtube.com/watch?v=7ysAWDYC6sg
That is the latest game on the ps2, and yes the ps2 is actively rendering that.
Now c2 had te opportunity to move to a system, namely ps3, which is like a million times stronger in computing power, yet people still doubt those shots are ingame?

and oh, you guys aren't forgetting about dbz burst limit are you, with its superb looking visuals.

Oh and if you guys didn't know, this is old, it was announed a long while ago, named Naruto PS3 Project, and those shots are from the gameplay vid released back then too.

I agree with all of your post, I thought Naruto 360 was pretty average at best TBH.

I've never played a c2c game myself but from videos they kind of put Naruto 360 to shame in terms of Art and up to date content.

If it's realtime then they seem to have put a lot of effort into making an engine that renders Naruto's collar differently in each shot, or perhaps it's just a different model each time? You can't make an enginge that decides what is visualy pleasing and not, though i wish there was something like

if {looks good};
then{draw};
else{try again};

but unfortunately there isn't. The shading/lines is just way too good in these shot's to be made only by the engine imo. If it is for real then i'd truly welcome it, but i really don't think so.

In anime, typically when a character is very close to the camera, certain objects are drawn with more detail. When farther away, they are drawn with less detail, as there are more things in view of the camera. This has been done in naruto and other anime on multiple occasions.

Contra: wtf are you talking about? Ofc it will be done that way in an anime since every frame is DRAWN, but i never EVER heard of a game that actually changes the player model geometry/textures on account of distance to the camera. I know it's been done plenty when it comes to environments in order to have greater view distance but with character models?

Well, seeing as this game isn't using your typical cel shaded methods, no one can answer that question but the developers themselves. But I assume that if the developers are striving for it to look authentically anime as possible, then they have figured out a way to do so. When concerning certain video game styles I don't believe in the word "impossible".
