What I want to know is why Asmik (sp?), the makers of the old WCW and WWF games on the N64, is no longer making these sorts of games. They had an awesome gameplay system that had a great balance between fast/strong strikes/kicks and a non "button mashing" grapple system that tied well into play off the ropes and such. Great, great games. Good 4 player fun, even for non-wrestling fans. And the create a wrestler feature where you could do any combination of your own favorite moves was awesome.

Those were really skill oriented fighting games in a 3D arena. It is really too bad no one is making games like that but these wrastlin' games are all show and no go. Lets see if this TNA title can prove me wrong.

I occasionally read up on wrestling shows, having been into it in the past, and TNA sounds like a real botch job of a promotion like WCW when it was dying. There seems to be no cohesion from week to week and some of the gimmick matches and storyline rivalries are dumb as hell.

Fingers crossed that the game can deliver fun at least. Might be worth skipping the "Campaign" modes though if they mirror the real life product!

I'm not sure what Asmik's involvement was but Aki Corp was the main development team for all of those titles, for some reason they are now called "syn Sophia". They made the first two Def Jam games as well, which essentially used their awesome wrestling engine. After that it appears they moved away from wrestling/fighting games altogether.

I still have a mint Japanese copy of Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 for the N64 somewhere.

Do The Def Jam games play a lot like the old Aki games? You got me interested... 4 player over live?

The game appears to have self shadowing which definitly stands out if you compare it to the SmackDown vs Raw games. The shadows in these images, however better not be photo shopped or doctored just to look better than its rival. Competition is always good.

The Def Jam games are almost identical in gameplay, save for the slightly less realistic finishing moves and the fact that you are using rappers and the like. No online unfortunately.
