Atari has announced The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, here is the first images. The game will be released autumn 2009, including a new engine and a new combat system.

Atari press release:
LONDON, UK – 2 December 2008 – At the ATARI LIVE showcase event in London today, Atari and CD Projekt RED announced plans for the global release of The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf on PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in autumn 2009.

Based on the story of multi award-winning million-selling PC role-playing game The Witcher and completely rebuilt pixel by pixel for the new generation of consoles, The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf brings the unrivalled RPG experience to Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 with a brand new combat system for thrilling dynamic action, and a new engine delivering matchless state-of-the-art visuals. The game is underpinned with the evocative and enthralling story which helped secure the original game’s status as PC role-playing game of 2007, based on the mature and compelling universe created by renowned Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

“The creative vision and dedication to the quality of the player experience that CD Projekt RED bring to the Witcher games is extraordinary, and it’s great to be working with them to bring the Witcher universe to console gamers,” said Phil Harrison, President of Infogrames Entertainment, the parent company of Atari. “Taking this brilliantly realised world to PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 gamers for the first time is a breakthrough in the development of this important franchise.”

“We’re thrilled to continue our great relationship with Atari, whose refreshing focus on quality fits squarely with our own, to bring Geralt and the Witcher franchise to an even larger audience – fans who expressed to us very clearly that The Witcher would be a natural fit on consoles,” said Adam Kiciński, CEO, CD Projekt RED. “Console gamers’ tastes are maturing; they’re looking for deeper story-driven experiences that are very hard to find in today’s console market. We’re developing this remake based upon the compelling narrative that helped The Witcher on PC sell more than a million copies and win more than 100 awards, building everything else from the ground up to be the definitive console RPG.”

Based on the universe created by best-selling Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf puts players in the role of Geralt, a professional monster slayer who exists on the fringes of a complex society troubled by the kind of problems more commonly found on the front pages of newspapers than in a fantasy universe. Taken as a child, mutated, and trained in the arcane ways of the witchers, Geralt is a reluctant hero, who nonetheless finds himself all too frequently in the heat of battles that are not his own. In this world there is no right or wrong, only decisions and consequences.

With The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, the best PC RPG in recent years is being completely remade as the ultimate console RPG. The title is being developed by a core team from CD Projekt RED working alongside France-based Widescreen Games who provide their cross-platform DaVinci engine technology. Everything about this title is interesting to me...but I have a question.

They said they are gonna make a new combat system for the consoles just because for the controls.

Is the combat gonna be something like DMC, God of War, NG type where you press the buttons to do the sword swings and use magic, or is it something else?

If so, then I will definitely keep a closer eye on this, if not, then, ah well.

i have the extended version on pc and it's freaking awesome.

Sath: honestly, don't expect DMC combat. It might be improved but it's still an RPG.

At any rate...it looks good. If these images are actually representative of what it'll look like running on my 360 it sure does whip the PC version.

*edit: also, looks kind of weird that he's using the wrong sword in all pictures applicable ^^

Megido, I am not expecting DMC style combat at all, I just want to know if combat is real time by me pressing the buttons to do various attacks and magic, thats all.

And yes, I knew it was a RPG and that is something I will remember.

One thing I forgot to say in the other thread is that the musics are awesome. Main menu one is so great.

Well, as it stands in the PC version you click to attack, right click to use signs (magic) and double tap a direction to dodge. I assume it'll be something similar in the console version :)

Well if thats the case, I am interested.

I mean as long as I do the attacks by pressing the buttons on the controller fighting in real-time is good enough for me.

I like the art and its settings, music, and RPG...combat is the only thing that worries me.
I am definitely not expecting action combat like DMC/NG type from this title because of the footages I have seen of The Witcher.

But if the combat is about me pressing a certain button to attack and use magic...etc. then its fine by me.

Never picked this up on PC, but always wanted to.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on this one.

The PC version ran on the old Neverwinter Nights engine, so it was very inefficient.

These screenshots look more like mockups / concepts than even bullshots. The way the shadows look in the one shot look pasted in.

Anyways I hope this one turns out well. I think it's a very good idea to release this on consoles, because even the horrible Two Worlds sold LARGE amounts on 360. WRPGs on 360 = goldmine.

Was Two Worlds any good on the 360 btw?

Hopefully they wont dumb it down as this but thats just my wishful thinking.

Witcher/Dmc clone = fail...period

GeRaLTo: how can you possibly call DMC style action dumb as compared to "see enemy, click enemy until dead"? I'd welcome more action oriented combat, though i do doubt it. With that not saying that combat in the Witcher is bad at all, it works.

Kind of tired of the castles, trees and wooden crates.

I want my sci-fi action WRPG! :(

That looks great, really impressive, except it looks like there is more smog there then in most big cities o.o But I was really bummed when this game was PC only, I'm super glad its coming to consoles. Bout time we get a nice mature RPG =)

This is NOT Two Worlds, so it doesn't matter, the game was good on PC, it can't be that bad on Consoles. Chances are the gameplay is adjusted minorly to fit the gameplay, but wil be mostly the same. And Two Worlds would have been a lot better but it just wasn't well made.

Also, I have a thing for reflections on the ground, so I was pretty impressed by the reflections on the marble. Just because I think its totally awesome for some strange reason.

More action = Less rpg

In most cases more action = less rpg. Nonetheless its 0sec for me. Poofff

GeRaLTo i love your avatar. If only the rest of the world could comprehend the depth of the meaning of that simple phrase..

While this game is good, i was honestly dissapointed by it (on the pc). No character customization, no classes to choose from, no real difference between weapons or armor, it just wasnt an RPG, it was a 3rd person action game.
Commented on 2008-12-04 07:26:15
Baleur: so just cause there is no character customization, that turns it into a 3rd person action game? Way to reason man. No matter the character building, quests, choises and stuff, there's no character customization so the game can't be an RPG!

Obviously they skipped out on the character creation as the game is based around the novels and the main character of those stories. How could you tell the story of Geralt the witcher if you made him Mr. Derp the Paladin instead? :P

Hey cool. Looks pretty damn good. Wanted it on PC, but however forgot about it... Now that's a cool thing it's coming even better to the consoles. Like it. I'll keep an eye on this. Hurray ;)

Hope the guys from my country show the class on consoles.

SimonM7 Yeah it's brilliant. I wouldn't say it's nothing like AC1, but AC1 just seems like a bizarrely long, super early demo of 2. (3 Hours ago)
