Operation Flashpoint 2 out in the open

Operation Flashpoint 2 out in the open

Codemasters has just released some new images for Operation Flashpoint 2, that also goes by the title Dragon Rising. It will most certainly keep all the players who can't afford to play Arma 2 on PC busy. The game is planned for release in September on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and of course, PC.

Looks good. The grain filter is a bit too much for my liking, but maybe the PC-version will have the option to turn it off.
Arma 2 on PC is pretty good. A lot of bugs still, but knowing BIS they will keep bringing out patches. But again the helicopters are dreadfully hard to control. I understand they want to make it a sim, but I don't want a flight sim (don't think any soldier can fly a helicopter, stear a tank, fly a jet and so on, so they didn't have to push the realism in the choppers). I'm hoping OF2 will not have that simulation for vehicles.

Haven't really dug into the Arma 2 demo yet (just a little), but one thing they did get spot on is the colour scheme, it looks very natural. DOF is also done very well imo.

This looks kinda similar, but I'm kind of in unfamiliar territory when it comes to Army simulation PC games...

Looks good, but too much grain!

Hopefully when my joystick comes i can get to grips with the helis in armaII and in this aswell. Was doable with mouse and keyboard, but took a lot of effort just to get in the right direction.
I hope OPF runs a bit better than ARMAII, either way i think i prefer the art direction in this, and i hope it has a bit more structure/sympathy to those a little less hardcore sim.

It has certainly improved since its last appearance. But still not even close to being perfect.

lol looks almost exactly the same as ArmA 2, except the smoke in screen 3, which is insane. Photoshop?

Of course it's photoshop. But even with editing I think game is ugly. I tired of those sad gamma games. Also I don't think that game will offer some special exciting gameplay so it's boring.

Arma 2 looks better, the graphics engine in that game is really impressive, second best looking game I have seen after Crysis.

That's a tough thing to say about ArmA 2. As impressive as the engine is it isn't carried well by its art direction.. and Crysis uses both to wow you.

ArmA 2 also has pretty questionable performance.

What I'm most interested in is seeing how/if this game strikes a better balance between its quest for realism and its need for fun than ArmA 2.

Some questionable performance yes! I joined a multiplayer game the other day and it was totally pitch black! I could see the purple haze of the rising sun on the distant horizon and silhouette of a radar station and a house. For some reason this was running at 12 FPS on my machine LOLz

The regular day stuff that looks very impressive runs at about 40 FPS on high settings. The game's particle engine is also rather weak but it still looks mighty impressive IMO.

What's up?
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX 6 to 8 split on Eurogamer, which isn't quite as large but still pretty significant. (10 minutes ago)

SimonM7 Yeah sure, but from what console reviews are saying it's perfectly adequate. I mean I'm sure PC is the way to go, but I sincerely doubt we're seeing a 5 to 9 split score wise or anything. (13 minutes ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX not that the Xbox version is "that bad" by most accounts either.. there are plenty of people here playing it who adore it.. but the PC game is recieving higher marks across the board (15 minutes ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX @SimonM7: I doubt that's true too, if other reviews I've read are any indication. The game was designed around an interface that's not represented on the Xbox.. (16 minutes ago)

SimonM7 I doubt PC and 360 scores would differ much in EDGE, they simply don't fancy it. DA on the 360 is fine as long as you like the underlying game. (25 minutes ago)
  • callmekymbo
callmekymbo is DA on the 360 really that bad? I can't run it on my pc so the eggbox is my only viable alternative (1 Hour ago)

SimonM7 Wow, deja vu. (1 Hour ago)
