Ace Combat Assault Horizon unveiled

Namco-Bandai has just announced a new game in its famous Aerial Combat license, entitled Ace Combat Assault Horizon. Presented as a rebirth rather than a simple sequel, the game should be all about fast-paced dogfights when it is released, in 2011 on Xbox 360 and PS3. Till then, here are a trailer, a set of images and the press release.

Press Release:

CERGY-PONTOISE, FRANCE – 11 August 2010 – NAMCO BANDAI Games Europe kicks the tires, lights the fires and makes its peace with terra firma for the announcement of ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON, coming 2011 to Xbox 360® and PlayStation®3. Never before has aerial combat been so fast, so in-your-face and so vicious. It’s time to set the sky on fire.

The demanding Project Aces development team at NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. in Japan weren’t satisfied. They wanted more from the series. They wanted planes that tore apart limb from limb right in front of your face, spewing their oil lifeblood across the sky. They wanted to scrape the streets and dodge the steel skyscrapers of real world cities at blistering speeds, in an enthralling war drama that spanned the globe with a web of intrigue. They wanted players to pick up the controller and become deadly combat pilots in seconds, pulling off breathtaking kills at impossible speeds, and doing battle online in a multiplayer sky littered with fiery supersonic debris. What they wanted was steel carnage in the sky.

The result is not a sequel in the multi-million selling smash hit ACE COMBAT series, but a complete rebirth, a phoenix from the ashes flying at three times the speed of sound. The Project Aces team is building ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON from the ground up, with new technology fuelling their passionately realised vision of a game that puts players in the dark heart of the fight like no aerial combat game has done before.

“For us, this is a rebirth of the Ace Combat series, and a chance for us to take the series in a completely new direction,” said Kazutoki Kono, Producer at Project Aces, NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. “We’re confident that we’re going to create a new kind of action shooting (high-speed and destruction) experience with ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON, and we’re pouring passion, vision and skill into making a game like no other. We want to bring players closer than ever to the action so they feel the energy surge through them with every shot fired.”

ACE COMBAT ASSAULT HORIZON for Xbox 360® and PlayStation®3 is scheduled to launch across EMEA and Asia Pacific (not including Japan) in 2011.

So now it's a rail shooting like afterburner. Don't know if i'll like it.

only the mini-gun sections. flying is still flying by the looks of it, just looks like it has cinematic manoeuvres as well.

first time a flight game has gotten my attention. i have a far too deep dislike for the genre to buy it, but the trailer at least open the door to a possible rental.

Really curious about this one. I also played the other ones so I hope this will turn out better than 6.

Take a close look H.A.W.X, this is how you do it.

I'm personally surprised that Namco Bandai isn't porting Ace Combat 6 to the PS3 as this announcement kills off that possibility. We're talking about a company who freaking ports a Wii game to the PS3 here. Granted, Ace Combat 6 was mediocre, but so was Eternal Sonata.

holy cow, that was a wild ride of testosterone overflow... :D

I hope that this one also has some characters in it. I appreciate some story behind a game that could just easily be mission-to-mission shooter. The demon story behind the 5th game was cool and all the characters and their stories gave the game a good depth.
I'd also like to see some gameplay footage. Can't imagine to play it as a cinematic in this style.

Reminds me of some scenes in Call of Duty and Tom Clancy's HAWX.

This must be the first A C game where you can fly a chopper,
thats not a bad thing.

Holy crap ! That has to be best gametrailer of 2010... What a ride !! Love those slomo/quicktime events ! I firmly believe that there's no other game genre where QTE would stick any better than here. The cockpit sight/eject sequence looks so sick and fresh. Instant buy !!

True it looks great but as along time fan of the series it raises some questions for me as well. I am sold simply for the fact you can also fly Apaches and provide close air support.

The series definitely needed a shot in the arm but it would be a mistake to totally jettison the finely tuned flight model of the previous entries in favour of gimmickry. I am confident the Project Aces guys won't pork the pooch though...

Is it just me or does anyone else think the graphics don't look as good as Ace Combat 6? I mean, sure, the trailer is cool to watch but the actual graphics just don't look as impressive as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O2ZK2ODrxM (I would have linked to Gamersyde's video but its stream doesn't seem to be working.)

Tiz @amerakindesi: I liked 4's campaign as well, 5 was a massive misstep and while Joe isn't necessary for the H5 campaign to be good, I think he is necessary for it to be epic. (10 Hours ago)

amerakindesi To be frank though I loved halo 1, halo 2, halo 3, halo 4 campaigns in that order. 4 was my fav. (10 Hours ago)
