E3: Castlevania: LoS trailer & images

Konami today announced that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be released in 2010, they also unleashed a bunch of images. The game is a collaboration between Mercury Steam and Kojima Productions to be released on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Update: Trailer added.

Konami press release:
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has used the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event in Los Angeles to premiere the first footage of a brand new Castlevania title: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Developed by Madrid-based Mercury Steam, the game also marks a ‘dream’ development collaboration with Konami’s lauded Kojima Productions studio, led by Hideo Kojima.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be released in 2010 for PLAYSTATION®3 and Xbox 360 and will open a new era for the Castlevania mythology. Konami has worked to take the long-running series in brave new directions with a fresh and radical re-imagining, and the result is an epic tale of love and loss that befits the series.

Shown previously as Lords of Shadow in summer 2008 with a short teaser, Konami has kept under wraps its intention to radically take the Castlevania myth in a bold new direction until now. Konami has used E3 to showcase what it considers one of its most ambitious and innovative titles to date and reveal how it will present Castlevania to a wider audience of players hungry for genre-defining entertainment.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow takes place at the end of days. The Earth’s alliance with the Heavens has been threatened by a dark and malevolent force – the mysterious Lords of Shadow – darkness reigns the world. Across this shattered land, the souls of the dead wander unable to find peace, whilst creatures of evil roam free wreaking chaos and death upon the living.

Gabriel is a member of the Brotherhood of Light, an elite group of holy knights who protect and defend the innocent against the supernatural. His beloved wife was brutally murdered by the evil forces of darkness and her soul trapped for eternity. Neither living nor dead she realises the horrific truth of what is at stake and guides Gabriel to his destiny – and hopefully salvation for the world… but at what cost?

Thus, Gabriel must travel the destroyed world, defeating the evil tyrants in order to use their powers to bring balance back to the world. Armed with the versatile Combat Cross™ – the world’s last hope must encounter the three factions of the Lords of Shadow and end their unholy rule.

Mercury Steam has created a rich, open game world that traverses snowy mountain ranges, Gothic castles, and undead-strewn wastelands in a devastated Southern Europe during the Middle Ages. The production is being overseen by the European Product Planning office with advice and support from Kojima Productions. This multi-cultural dream collaboration will move the Castlevania brand to a whole new level, with rich storytelling, innovative gameplay and state-of-the-art technical elements brought together to form a revolutionary new direction for a modern 3D fantasy action epic.

Konami is premiering Castlevania: Lords of Shadow with a stunning trailer detailing the expansive nature of the game and its unique combat elements. It will also introduce the game’s stunning voice acting cast, with Gabriel voiced by Robert Carlyle (28 Weeks Later, Trainspotting, The Full Monty), and Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: Next Generation) as the mysterious Zobek. Natasha McElhone (The Other Boleyn Girl, Californication, The Truman Show) and Jason Isaacs (Black Hawk Down, The Patriot, Harry Potter series) round off the talent.

“Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will take the Castlevania series into brave, uncharted territories, and is a breath-taking adventure that boasts stunning aesthetics, deep and challenging game play, and a truly inspirational voice cast to deliver the games dramatic depth”, commented Dave Cox, Producer on the title and Head of Product Planning for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “We are also delighted to be working with Kojima Productions who have supported the development of the game and our intended goals with their keen vision and expertise,” he added. “This is a world’s first! A dream team up between a western development studio and one of Japan’s most revered and innovative creators”.

“We at Mercury Steam are pushing the envelope of today’s technology. Our goal is to create an incredible piece that will answer many people’s hopes and desires of what a next generation Castlevania game should be.” Said Enric Alvarez, Studio Head at Mercury Steam.

“Kojima Productions had learned the differences of western development teams and Japanese studios” added Ken Imaizumi, Senior Producer of Kojima Productions. “Mercury Steam is definitely one of the most talented studios in the world. We quickly agreed that we should work together and exchange ideas and knowhow across the board. We have full trust that the next generation Castlevania experience will deliver a high quality intense experience worthy of the Kojima Productions name and we are proud that this title will mark a new global direction for Konami as a company dedicated to breaking new ground in digital entertainment.”

Looking better than GOW3! And that shocked me... very good texture work, probably bullshots, but still...

I loved it alot.
Great art and graphics, voice acting, awesome music and the combat seems to be great and the trailer was nicely edited!

I do like the main character design though, looks very western and mature compared to other Castlevania games were they all looked like females.
The face and hair reminds me a bit of Dante (but with brown hair) from DMC4, mature looking and serious.

But this is definitely on my list for sure alongside NGS2, and GOW3.

*waiting patiently for Dantes Inferno gameplay*

They need to remaster the Vampire Killer music into orchestra like GRIN asked Jamie Christopherson to remaster the Bionic Commando theme into orchestra.

Vampire Hunter into big orchestra version would be amazing to hear, something like this but more epic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwKKtv5i-Zg

The combat looks solid and the graphics looks amazing not to mention the voice talent they have this should be a hit for sure and its on my list of 2010 for sure, and Kojipro colaborating I mean nerdgasm at its best.

Next year will be amazing.

this is looking very nice so far, but what I'd do for a bigger, better SOTN all in HD, bigger vaster map and an even bigger array of weapons and armor, that'd be pure and simply a dream come true.

Best. Cast. Ever.

Robert Carlyle and Patrick Stewart? Oh hells ya.

As for the game itself, it's looking like it could potentially be very good. In games like these the main character design is usually awful, but the design for the main character in this game looks awesome.

While not terrible that rendition of Vampire Killer is WAY too upbeat to work. It needs to be way more moody. I always thought that the old castlevania music was as good as written for guitar, that including Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears :)

THIS is the Castlevania that I've been waiting years for. And with Kojima attached to it, it can only get better. I don't know what his involvement will be exactly but I just hope the story won't be convoluted like his previous games.

Yeah cause Kojima totally fits the CV theme. A guy makes a couple of good games and people assume he can do anything.

Nope. Jazz drummers aren't automatically masters at metal drumming.

Finally,I am so glad that Iga is not involved in this anymore ! But Kojima..? Seems like an odd choice for me !

This could be finally a good 3D entry for the series.
Still love the 2D Castlevanias before the Iga era !

Hope now a Castlevania Rebirth would come out after Contra and Gradius, that would copy the SNES style !

And yeah..loved that they took the original Bionic Command music theme for the new game, was awesome !

But then again, drummers aren't real musicians anyway...

I saw the taped video of this, it was funny how when castlevania finally showed up the crowd went wild, when Kojima productions showed up, dead silence.

The last 2 3D Castlevania's were not really that good. Games did have great soundtracks. Sometimes I noticed I was playing the game just to listen it. Anyway this looks pretty good. I do hope to see more 2D CV too..

Old CV games music sounds amazing with electric guitar. Then again almost everything sounds good when played with it :p

I have always liked this medley/remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2mQJtXmtFU

Nah, they have one of the hardest jobs, but are typically flakey as hell. Bass Players on the other hand...

Don't rip on the bass. Playing bass well is incredibly hard and very musical. Though most bass players suck noodle, that's for sure.

About the game

What's up?
  • droezelke
droezelke WD2 is more fun than WD1, but it's so easy. Also, the main quests are 'meh'. WD1 had a more focussed story. The story in WD2 is uninspired. (1 Hour ago)
  • droezelke
droezelke @Sdarts: Don't forget that people are getting sick of CoD, they didn't trust WD anymore after the first. Dishonored 2 got too little PR according to me. (1 Hour ago)
  • Moonwalker
Moonwalker quests, which is a goddamn shame, a goddamn shame. For sure they could have come up with some meaningful side quests with at least a story. (2 Hours ago)
  • Moonwalker
Moonwalker Definitely enjoying FFXV more but I am solely talking about the story missions, some good diversity there. I also really like the Chocobos. Just such a shame that the side quests truly are all fetch (2 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX I just think it's a pretty bad sign if a new game can't generate interest on a free weekend. The fact that there are other new games is not a very compelling excuse imo. (4 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX Black Ops is also the most popular Call of Duty sub-brand now. (4 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts Also, even WD2 and Dishonered 2 sold much less than the previous games in their series. Same for CoD:IW, very few games that got released this Holiday season sold more than their predecessors. (4 Hours ago)
