I suspect that this kind of devise will be revolutionary (just like VR will be) and useful in other fields other than gaming in the near future.
And here is my opinion. It will suffer a similar outcome as Kinect.
Same things with games and the demo showed above. But as VR is being developed by many different companies with very different ideas, none of them yet produced anything really revolutionary. This is what I mean with 'scratch the surface'. They try to impress with weird new stuff that is maybe 'WOW' in the first 5 minutes, then you notice how it actually proves and serves nothing. When a kind of balance will be achieved by the companies and a certain hardware level (processing power in home computers, resolution in the VR-set displays) reached, then we will maybe be able to set VR as a standard.
For the moment, it seems that everybody is trying to do the craziest useless thing to try to impress viewers, instead of delivering a satisfying device with a well developed software.

Did you try it at the show? Huh? Oh wait... you're not there? You haven't touched it?!? Nope? Okay then.

And sure, several kinect stage demos were also scripted, because live demos are hard. That did not stop people from being impressed with the real HoloLens prototype. I'm very confident in this technology, and I am excited about HoloLens, but their stage demonstrations are somewhat misleading. And they're obviously embellished.
They should be more transparent if people are going to accept the demos at face value.
I can't wait to see Magic Leap too.
