fun game tho, the timed destruction objectives are great fun, like boom blox, but with a more advanced physics engine.
I can't believe how polished is RF Guerrilla, compared to last games from Volition, which were buggy as hell.
:>
As a result, the destructability's not all that interesting imo. Oh well, maybe I should give the demo a try first...
I haven't actually played the game, so I suppose I can't claim this game is bad or anything, but damn...it looks so boring imo. The environments of every vid I've seen are...well...there's just one type of environment it seems. Red sand + rocks + generic building. :|

that said. it is incredibly fun. sure the missions get repetative just like most open world games, but the actual act of detroying a building one suport structure at a time for some reason feels very rewarding. i almost exclusively use my sledge hammer, just becasue it's so satisfying to take down a building with just that tool. sure you can plant charges and blow it up in about 5 seconds, but wheres the fun in that.
the shooting mechanics are what let the game down a bit imo. they feel kinda sub par compared to other shooters out there, but other then that it's a lot of fun...shame the story wasnt a bit more in-depth tho.

I think I'll try the demo anyway, see what's up...
But here it just seems like some gimmick and the buildings just drop like a jenga tower...
I can understand this game can be fun in a simple way.. But these open world games of late: Infamous, Prototype and this looks so boring... (I've got infamous, and that's fun but gets old really quick)
I can't believe they've been able to fuck up a franchise this way... Red Faction 1 and 2 were great! The destructibility was limited but useful ( digging tunnels to other rooms, cutting of passage ways in multiplayer)

as you said, it's a shallow kind of fun....pick it up for an hour or so...it isnt a game you can play for hours on end...it just gets too repetative. unlike infamous or GTA where i'm litterally playing for about 12 hours straight.
GTA 4 was fantastic but like I said earlier Infamous, Prototype, Red Faction, Bionic Commando all look great and can be fun games, they could've been so much more.....
free hostages, destroy buildings, shoot at EDF?
is there huge monster mechs? is there huge open vistas that take your breath away?
what is the multiplayer like? what kind of modes and options?
any customizable options?
how long is campaign?
thanks...renting is like ten dollars right?
Yeah I'm not saying this is a bad game or anything but I find that most of these open world games are kind of shallow...

so is the missions ive just seen in the first ten minutes basiclly all there is to red faction?

the main missions offer a little bit more depth, the side missions however consist of maybe 5 game types, and they repeat multiple times in any given area. attacking a EDF controlled building, defending an area, almost puzzle like building destruction mini-games, taking a vehicle back to a base within a time limit, and some others where vehicles are driving around and you have to destroy them or jack them.
there are walking mech things tho, about 3 or 4 that i've come across so far. anything from fast moving but weak, to heavy duty but slow. there are even EDF mechs that let you shoot dudes.
vista wise...not really, the draw distances are pretty impressive considering the destruction, but as i said, its a random terrain with block buildings scattered on the top of it. it doesnt feel designed...mearly randomised.
cant really speak about multiplayer since i havnt played it, there is a multiplayer demo tho, so you could check that out and see how you like it.
as for how long...depends. i've been playing about 10 hours but i do very few of the side missions (since they're repetative) and i'd imagine i have around 5 hours left...not bad really. easily 20+ hours if you do EVERYTHING.
definately worth a rental tho, or just wait till it drops in price and get it cheap.
bionic commando wasnt even open world, so i'm not sure why you're using that as an example...lol
MP reminds me of Tribes, which says a lot.
Yep you're right :-) It did get boring pretty quickly though...
what i find weird about this game is that a good portion of the cool moments are usually out of your control. like when you shoot down a flying plane/jet thing and you see it go down in the distance only for it to smash into a building....it looks very cool, and completely unscripted.
one actually took out a target building purely by luck...but it just looked so cool. i wish i could say it was planned, and it was under my control...but it wasnt, a lot of what makes it good is the unpredictability.

This game looks pretty damn cool. Looks better than the first Red Faction games, even.
Can't wait until the PC version ships, but am still hoping for a demo.
The missions are weak, the story is weak, and the gunplay is REALLY weak. I just don't get why so many people think that this game is so fun. I guess I'm just not as big on breaking stuff as others lol...
I think the game looks a lot of fun just destroying stuff and creating chaos. Whether that is enough to sustain a full game for me remains to be seen as I've pre-ordered the PC version which isn't out yet. The 360 version looks graphically good but the trademark excess of Volition screen tearing would drive me nuts... it looks horrible! Glad I didn't buy that version...
also their is a few change of scenery...most notably in change of sectors...
cant wait to get this game...!
I rented the game after reading a lot of good things about it and pretty much came to the conclusion that you have to be a little bit of a kid to like this game. If you still think breaking stuff and watching stuff go boom is fun in it's own right, then you might like this game. I think the destruction feels like breaking a "lego building" as someone said earlier. Not really any true sense of destruction, just making blocks fall down.

nearing the end of the game i spent about an hour taking down this huge tower block that wasnt even a key building, or even part of a mission, it had an indestructable support structure, meaning you had to take it down bit by bit from the top, down to the bottom.
i guess if you have a good imagination you'll love it. if you like everything spoon fed to you, you'll probably hate it.
