Sega kindly sent us a commercial version of Sega Rally on Xbox 360, and I quickly turned on the recorders to bring you the ten first minutes of the game, in 720p as usual.
The video features four races, with as many different tracks. Concerning the game itself, I appreciate the old-school arcade feeling, the speed of the races and the terrain deformation which really adds to the sensations, but not so much the physics of the car, a bit tame when you've played Colin Mc Rae: Dirt, and the 30fps framerate when you'd expect the double. Anyway, Sega Rally is a very enjoyable game, fast, easy to play and as colorful as a holiday postcard. Arcade players should love it as I do, flaws or not :)
Looking good although was hoping they'd have sorted that from the bonnet view you can see over the roof of the other cars.. maybe they all have lower suspension ;)
Seriously tempted to buy this for the pick up and play factor, not after a sim as have RBR and LFS on PC for that.
I played the PS3 demo and it was horr-i-ble. I can appreciate arcade games, don't get me wrong, but this just didn't do it for me. Crazy Taxi... Burnout... Need for Speed (before they went "urban")... That's arcade gaming done right. They were simple games but they didn't feel dated for their time. Sega Rally feels very, very dated.
And people said Dirt controls were too arcadey. I played the demo and the game completely turned me off. I like arcade gameplay like the next person but gee whiz it seemed so horrible to me. Honestly had way more fun playing the Dirt demo. I was also unimpressed with the graphics as far as the mud and everything.
I played Sega Rally on the first xbox and thought the gameplay/fun factor was lacking. The graphics always look great though. It seems ashame to waste such pretty graphics on an average game. And what's with the heads up alerts. I find that so annoying and distracting. Is it just me or does that bother anyone else?
Sega Rally...legendary game. This one isn't so great in my opinion. Handling is tooo arcadey for me now. I don't know, I'll give the demo another chance.
edit: nah, I can see the arcadey coolness in this, like with the new Outrun. Very colorful graphics!
Well, the grafx look very good, but as long as I have no internet, I can't download the demo =(
Hm, makes me sad that so many people dislike this game. I was hoping for a new Must-Have-Game...
Is there no fun at all playing SR? I really can't imagine that!
The problem for me with this game is how they ruined the later cmr games on the xbox.
When playing outside the car view, the car seems like its on an axis, where as before you used to see the side of the car sliding in.....:(
Too bad as I was really lookign forward to this. The tracks dont feel the same, on the original a easy left meant an ever so slight tilt left or right, on this its quite a big move quite often having to break, there was none of that in 1 or 2...
dave, on both tracks in the demo, with either car, you dont need to brake once. its all about finding the grooves, and barely letting off the gas when you absolutely need to slide around a turn.
i like the gameplay more the dirt's, but then again theyre very different games in the same genre. later in the game dirt just got flat out frustrating, i dont see this happening with revo unless the a.i. is terrible.
No wonder it didn't feel right on PS3, Synce. A great amount of gameplay in Sega Rally comes from the changes in the track and without DualShock, you just won't feel those. You do on the 360 and that's why I consider Sega Rally a superb game.
I like the arcade handling, the jaw-dropping well designed tracks and the variations in the mud in just a single track. The AI too is very well done, as it seems to connect to your skills. Hell yeah, this is my kind of racing game.
