Flashback coming to Nintendo Switch

Flashback coming to Nintendo Switch

Flashback 25th Anniversary will be available on June 7th on the Nintendo E-shop but also with a collector's edition. A small teaser and some screenshots in the news.

Microïds and Paul Cuisset are pleased to announce that Flashback, the classic action-adventure game consistently ranked among the best 100 games of all time, will be available on Nintendo Switch starting June 7th, 2018.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Super Nintendo version of game, Microïds is releasing a Collector's Edition (in Europe and Australia), which includes the game in physical edition, a retro cartridge style metal case, an exclusive numbered metal card, a 24-page retro-style instruction booklet, the digital soundtrack (remastered version). Pre-orders are now open!

In the Nintendo Switch version of Flashback, players will be able to choose between the original 1993 gaming experience and Modern mode, which contains:

- Post-FX graphic filters,
- Completely remastered sound and music,
- A brand new "Rewind" function, variable according to the level of difficulty
- Tutorials for those who need a boost!

Flashback the story:
2142. After fleeing from a space ship, but stripped of all memory, the young scientist Conrad B. Hart awakens on Titan, a colonised moon of the planet Saturn. His enemies and kidnapers are snapping at his heels, and he has to find a way back to Earth while warding off the dangers that beset him and unravelling a fiendish extra-terrestrial plot that threatens the planet…
Flashback will be available from June 7th, 2018 on the Nintendo E-shop and in retail with the 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition. The game is entirely subtitled in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and is rated PEGI 12.

I really love Flashback, I've even recently re-bought it on Mega Drive, but man these screens are very ugly. All the detail is gone, i understand a smoother look but this just strips all detail and depth. Seems so lazy. Even the UI is blurry.

Flashback is one of my favorite games of all time, and a big reason why I originally wanted to be a game developer - I have the game on big box Amiga, original PC, and MegaDrive versions.

The 360/PS3 era remake in 2.5D missed all the charm of the original, I still don't understand why they didn't remake it either with hires vector style graphics (like the constantly updated Another World releases) or really detailed pixel art graphics. Even a style done in 3D but that looks faceted or vectorized would have been better.

I miss the point of doing a smoothing shader on this, it makes the graphics look like a blobby mess. I'll probably get this because it's a cool physical edition of Flashback, I don't even own a Switch.

it is a tad lazy. It's just a type of bi linear filter that smooths out the rough pixel edges, and scales up, presumably, for larger TV's so that the game doesn't look like a blocky pixel mess. Capcom did a similar thing with the HD REmake. It's like a cheap vectorization trick. Either way, its not going to look good on a big TV regardless of it being filtered or not.

god it looks like shit. i actually think i prefer the original. if you're going to remake flashback do it properly with completely new high res sprites, don't just stick a filter over the old game.

Couldn't say better, I like that any game can be available on switch but a cheap port for easy money, specially with this classic game, is really bad .. I hope at least they'll have a "switch" to play the game with the original graphics ..

About the game

What's up?
  • MrWhite
MrWhite The other scenes that had all CG models of the actors and actress were so well done, I didn't realise it was entirely all rendered. Joi for example is almost completely CG overlaid with the actress. (0 minute ago)
  • MrWhite
MrWhite Tarkin in Rogue One looked great right up until he started moving and talking. Then it just looked ridiculous. BR's Sean Young is a bit similar, but its only really her mouth moving that I find off (2 minutes ago)
  • MrWhite
MrWhite CGI was at the point of being capable of rendering photo realistic humans a while ago. It's just the animation that lets it down. (3 minutes ago)
  • MrWhite
MrWhite @Melmoth: That's the hard stuff because you instantly know its not real, though. The invisible stuff is usually stuff that isn't animated, like cityscapes and ambient background effects. (4 minutes ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth how many will point out that the snow by the roadside is a visual effect. those kind of effects are used all the time without people noticing. (7 minutes ago)
  • nostradamus
nostradamus funny thing is... if you want to find amazing lit and looking marble hallways with statues and fine architecture in a game, maybe... play Ryse? kinda akward. (7 minutes ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth @MrWhite: "invisible" CGI is more easily fooling the audience. When you see superheroes fly around in a city, or young versions of old actors, you know it's not real. while watching a family drama.. (8 minutes ago)
