I think everything about this game is awesome, but I don't think I'll play it. Psychonauts had the same awesomeness about it but all of its gamplay elements felt off if you had any prior experience with platformers.
To me it seems they still struggle with finding a good home after the point and click adventure genre - which was always the best fit for the stories and characters and settings they want to employ in their games - died off. It's just that.. none of the genres they dabble in now are things you can just haphazardly use as tentpoles.
It's encouraging that the game does more than the rather iffy looking hack and slash bits, but ultimately it might just aswell be a jack of all trades and master of none - A GAME sustained entirely by its charm and characters. For me, unless the gameplay is satisfying in itself, the things surrounding it won't make me enjoy a game.
I could be off mark entirely of course, but based on Pyschonauts I think Double Fine should try to modernise the type of adventure games they used to make rather than presume that console games with a jump button are immediately good platformers. There's more to it than that.
In Psychonauts the fun was from exploring the camp and the minds of the teachers and other characters (some of the most creative level design ever), and I can't wait to explore the heavy metal open world in Brutal Legend.
