Looks very good. Cool game.

I recently procured a copy of both Fallout 1 + 2, I'm very glad Bethesda chose to take this game in a different direction. The original games, despite having a fantastic concept and universe behind them, haven't aged well at all.

The only gripe I have with this game's presentation is that the engine still has the problem it had in Oblivion; that is, the bumpmapping makes everything look like it's made from plastic, much like the Unreal Engine 3. Otherwise, it's looking quite pretty.

looks great..and i've no worrys about the story. My only concern is with the real time combat..we havent seen enough of the AI demonstrated though it, the animations, and just how smooth the over all combat is. I think its also a shame that 3rd person combat is played out through cut scenes you'd have no control of...almost like a jrpg. When i kinda hoped it would play out more like when you pause the battle in Mass effect.

We shall see... that release date is getting ever closer

You DO have complete control of the 3rd person combat if you want. It only uses the cinematic camera angles if you choose to use the VATS feature.

I think it's great and adds some visual flare to the combat and gruesome deaths.

Bumpmapping doesnt make things look plastic, it just adds depth to the textures.
The plastic look is due to how they set up the specularity on their shaders. Just the look they want to go with i assume.

Character models, not to mention the animations, look a bit bland.

Really like the environments, however (some of them, at least).

Yeah it was a huge mistake to do away with the realistic lush green fields that usually occupy a post-apocalyptic wasteland in favour of merely trying to look "cool".

Really looking forward to blasting some dirt on that wicked trike in shot 2. Looks awesome!

No but seriously, i thought this looked great before but the graphics just feel "meh" to me now. Hopefully that won't matter once i start playing though. Even if this is just oblivion but with a new setting i'll still be alright.

Tell me about it.. I'll no doubt get hung for saying this, but I tried playing Fallout 2 not long ago, and while I loved the dialogue and story sequences, I couldn't get my head around the combat system. It's slow, tedious and just infuriating.

I think Bethesda have managed to keep what's important from the series, but update the actual gameplay. Of course, I can't claim that as I'm not really a hardcore fan, but they'll no doubt just complain about everything either way.

the only thing im worried about is the VATS system. it seems too easy when you can just pause the action and blow off peoples heads with no skill involved what so ever. i'd rather they just made a really solid FPS mechanic then have a half assed turn based system and a half assed FPS system.

It's an rpg it isn't supposed to be about skill.

What??
Generally the skill required for playing RPGs is stats management. I assume he means prowess in action games = skill in that particular statement :P

Expect VATS to be much more difficult than that in the full game. The guy basically had unlimited VATS points - in the full game, you'll have a limited amount and you will have to build them up.

well for a start.. this is an action rpg, just as Oblivion, Mass effect, Bioshock, deus ex ect before it...and i would say that each of those required just as much "skill" as any cod, or halo, or whatever game you would consider required skill.

bioshock is FAR from an RPG, action or otherwise. its a FPS, of course it required skill. oblivion didnt since it was all calculated in the background (plus the combat consisted of flailing at your enemy for 5 minutes...no skill. and finally mass effect, which again wasnt very skill based either. but at least that had a few more options.

although all of which where more involving then simply pausing the gameplay and picking "head" from a list....no skill at all. my grandma could do that, and she's dead.

Bioshock had rpg elements, just as deus ex did..of leveling up the character. Oblivion required just as much skill during a battle as any other game... as does Mass effect. What would you suggest is a game that requires skill? rather than just any other game with a learning curve.

It takes skill. Not the same type. But skill still.

The part about him having a complete misunderstanding of this game and the VATS system, or the part about his grandma being dead??
