Images of Rage

Images of Rage

Id Software releases the first two official images of Rage, probably taken from the PC version. Note that the game will be the first one to use John Carmack's new engine, the Id Tech 5.

they smell funny...

... funny with a little hint of bullshot.

Yeah if those screens have something to do with reality I must admit - it looks impressing.

These screens will be from the PC version and will look just like that when playing on a powerfull PC. Hopfully consoles will look the same, although john carmack sayed today at Quakecon that the 360 will have compressed textures because it'll have to fit on 2 dvd's and they don't want to have to go over 2 dvd's. So i guess PS3 will look almost as good as PC since they don't need to compress textures because of blu-ray

Except the ps3 is limited by its 256MB of memory. I doubt the console versions will come close to looking anywhere as good as the game will on a high-end PC, blu-ray storage or not.

Doesn't look that good. Textures aren't great and skin/clothes don't come over as such. Probably bullshots too.

Have you watched the video? It looks really great and 60fps too for consoles.

oh go touch yourself.

this looks amazing [on pc], hopefully it'll be about more than the graphics though [unlike doom 3 when it released] and will still be fun on my gimped pc [read: xbox360]

wow i didnt know their were people that still thought the ps3 only has 256mb of memory lol, game looks great so far :) .. cant wait to see more

Is there a difference between bullshots and captures taken from a 3000€-machine?!

I guess not, so no bullshots...

PS3 has just as much ram at the 360 does, 512mb. it's just split into two 256mb
Commented on 2008-08-01 19:59:05 In reply to Sto
Yes but more to the point its split between cpu and gpu so its a limiting factor in that only 256Mb of textures can ever be used.
I'm sure they'll use some trickery to get round this partially.
Commented on 2008-08-01 19:59:53
Yes, but only 256mb of RAM is AVAILABLE to the PS3's GPU, meaning it can't do as much as teh 360 GPU if developers want to us the generalized RAM for graphics rather than computing. While not a huge problem, it does limit the PS3's graphical abilities, and the Cell can only make up for so much, and that's only when developers know what they're doing with it.

But anyways, the game looks damn good if these screens haven't been touched up. I'm sure it'll look damn good on both consoles as well, even if the pc version looks best.

And people think I'm picky with graphics? lol......

Ugh :p These aren't bullshots, except for the 10000xAA, maybe you think this because of the 1st picture where the right guy seems to float over some kind of blur with his left arm. But I've seen this happen in Lost Planet's cutscenes too.

Whatever this may be, PS3, PC or 360. I own all so bya.

http://talkplaystation.com/ps3s-ram-and-rsx-explai...

I asked about the ram in another thread and raised a few points and got no response. The GPU can access all the ram and this piece backs up what I found out when looking at the specs and not some fanboy bullpoop.

This game is looking amazing, and gives me the same feeling as I got after seeing Doom 3 running that first time, can't wait to see and hear more from this, and Doom 4 should show itself in the next 12 months.

"fanboy bullpoop" that's exactly what that talk playstation "article" is about.
As for RSX accessing the main RAM, yes it can do it, but not the same way as the dedicated GRAM and it's a big pain in the ass for the developers. But still it's doable.
The article is wrong when it comes to Cell using the GDDR3 though, Cell simply can't access it in an efficient manner. The only to do it with an acceptable bandwidth is through RSX, making it utterly pointless.
And now, let's stop talking about this bullshit.

love the lighting in those shots, but I can't believe ID engine still hasn't smooth edges, come'on, pointy heads should be something of the previous generation.

And I didn't knew that there still are fools who (hope) think the ps3 one will ever be as good as the other game counterpart, in multiplataform titles, lulz.

Well you couldn't guess more wrong and have absolut no clue how far behind 360 AND PS3 is to modern GPUs.

Every game that has been brought to all 3 plattforms has always looked better on PC. The amount of AA and AF and the higher resolution.

The latest card from nVidia would kill the RSX and C1 any day.

Even if the RSX in theory could use 512mb it would mean that Sony had to kill the XM`B in-game and the devs kill all the acess of RAM for the CELL, not very likly.

Wait wait wait wait...

Its not "John Carmacks" engine. He didn't make it alone. Give credit where credit is due.

That said, looks amazing. And obviously its the PC version. No way the game looks that good on consoles.

Oh shut up. Look at Soul Calibur 4. They both look IDENTICAL. Don't be a fanboy.

ok, didn't want to have to go into that but here goes.

" The article is wrong when it comes to Cell using the GDDR3 though,Cell simply can't access it ia an efficient manner."

I can't see anywhere in the article were it says cell reads GDDR3 efficiently.

regarding the cell's alleged memory constraints it's known that cell is tied to 16mbs direct access to the GDDR3 (which is what you saying in the quote without declaring numbers), but is countered by rsx's full access to the xdr and because of this the 16mbs is all cell needs when dipping into the GDDR3 to keep it going.

limited cpu access is nothing new and shows the priority towards the gpu's bandwith requirements which is a good thing.and the design implication in this is (as you pointed out) for cell to fully access GDDR3 (somthing it doesn't need to do explained above) it can do it by going through RSX or (as you didn't say) the XDR reads from GDDR3 were cell can read it at full speed,

Also when it it goes to XDR from GDDR3, the latancy before cells access is around 400 cycles, which compares favourably to the xenon's 600 cycles to access it's unified RAM.

I'm not trying to be a fanboy i've to much respect for the industry for that but I'm just basing it on the specs.

actually most places seem to agree the ps3 has the slight edge, but whatever.

this looks great tho, cant the engine create rediculous textures no matter the ram? meh, i'll probably buy it on the 360 even though carmack said its gonna look worse cos of compression or something. blu-ray comes in handy after all i guess.

Tiz Gears 4 is a refinement of the Gears 3 formula, which is great if you loved Gears 3. @alimokrane: I'm partial to the Embar & Overkill. (27 minutes ago)
  • alimokrane
alimokrane @Phaethon360: I agree on the enemy variety, definataly but I simply love the little tricks and bits they added here and there. Best weapon has to be the DropShot. Ball of fun! (30 minutes ago)
  • Tiz
Tiz But with regards to variety, do you mean enemy variety? Because I agree. That is spot on. Gears 3 had so many different Locust & Lambent classes which kept Horde rounds fresh, Gears 4 does not. (50 minutes ago)
  • Tiz
Tiz PhaeKO outta nowhere. Rod said he wanted to do it right before doing it different and 343 were the blueprint for this which is why a lot of the Gears community still remains intact. (52 minutes ago)
  • Phaethon360
Phaethon360 That and the variety just isn't there. So many different enemy and weapon types in Gears 2, which was the high point of the series for me. Gears 3 wasn't bad but it was on the downswing for me. (57 minutes ago)
  • Phaethon360
Phaethon360 I really dislike Gears 4. Horde 3.0 was a disappointment, and the mechanics haven't changed much since Gears 1. After playing the remake so soon it just felt like more of the same. (58 minutes ago)
