Interview with turn10

Interview with turn10

Another big racing Q&A today, this time with turn10 and the Lead Designer on Forza Motorsport 2, Dan Greenawalt himself. Inside you'll find surprisingly much talk about Gran Turismo, plus the hype, cockpit view, upcoming Forza games and much more.

First GT game had 294 cars in the game!

People get hung up on the "number" of cars GT has when a LOT of them are repetitions that would be achievable by the extensive tuning and customisation that the Forza series offers.

I think Forza 2 would legitimately have a claim at an infinite number of cars if they really wanted to play the marketing speak game.

Hi ,

i think one Part is double

In order to answer your question, I have to provide some backstory. The Artificial Intelligence in the original Forza Motorsport was based on Drivatar technology developed by one of Microsoft’s research teams in Cambridge, England. This sort of colaboration is one of the benefits of working at a 50k employee company – you never know what sort of technology some other part of the company might be working on. The Cambridge guys are researchers, not game developers. So they approached the problem of AI from a completely different angle. The AI they developed was a form of machine learning. It was truly revolutionary AI. Having revolutionary AI is both a blessing and a curse. The Drivatars are really more like children than standard AI. You don’t script them, you teach them. We really never got our heads fully wrapped around the system before we shipped the original Forza Motorsport. I’d say they were more like 13 year olds in the original.

greets from germany

I hope they can get over their fear of having to model the interiors. All Forza needs to be 100% perfect is the cockpit view. I like the brake pedal idea.

I'd really like time of day adjustment too. Screw weather.

"Forza Motorsport 2 contains over 300 cars including Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini."

"No other racing game gives you cutting edge simulation physics including damage with Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini."

"Will there be a cockpit view, 4 player split screen and view of the inside of the car?

This is a question of scale. Forza Motorsport 2 contains over 300 cars including Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini."

---lmao. What does having certain car manufacturers in your game have to do with not having an in-car view? lol@ Marketing PR

Oh wait:

"What makes Forza 2 different from other racing games?

Seriously? No other racing game gives you such a complete next-gen package. * 300 upgradeable, tuneable and personalizable cars including Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini"

-LOL

one more time...

"Is it possible for a car to overturn during a race?

There is a myth in the industry that you can’t do damage with licensed production cars. MGS as been damaging licensed production cars for about a decade – Midtown Madness, PGR and the original Forza Motorsport all featured damage to production vehicles. It’s not easy to do, but its definitely possible – even with Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini."

;) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

* Next-gen HD graphics running at 60 fps with AA, HDR, 3D grass and spectators, real-time reflections and shadows.
I LOLed :P Nice interview though, props for the respect toward the GT guys.

Good grief broken record almighty.

How many times did he say

"Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini"

?

My god, we get it Dan, Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini are firmly in the game!

ARGH, NOW I SAID IT! >_<

Are there Porche's, Ferrari's, and Lamborghini's in this game?
Commented on 2007-06-05 20:28:36
Well those cars make or break the mass market appeal for the game, and the licenses are relatively hard to come by in video games (traditionally).

The only thing Forza needs to become perfect is weather effects, cockpit view, and better replay angles. I think these are realistic expectations to have for Forza 3. I know GT5 will have these features.

new request for some chillin videos plz

Replay angles I agree with. As for weather, yeah it looks cool and everything but it's not fun to drive in the rain. I'd welcome different skies and lighting conditions however.

Id rather have damage effects on my car (both physical and cosmetic), realistic physics and sim-like gameplay than XXXX number of cars that drives like bump cars lol

Funny how they say Forza 2 updates physics 360 times a second while the CM:Dirt team says they do it a 1000 times a second (read the CM:Dirt Q&A).. To me this is all just PR BS with numbers..

And it still sucks you cannot totally wreck or flip your car in games like this.. Aslong as car-manufacturers don't get over themselfs and understand these are just virtual videogames we will never get real simulation.. People wreck cars in real life too you know..

Can't wait to play Forza 2.. MS better hurry up repairing my Xbox 360 (yup, it broke! making it a 66% failrate (4 out of 6) now in our group of Xbox 360 owning friends incl myself)..

Yeh well the difference is in the amount of parameters of physics that are being updated, Forza 2 updates 9000 parameters per car and judging by the physics on DIRT its probably updating something closer to 900.
Commented on 2007-06-06 14:16:47
Maybe per car, jin, but then you have Dirt's destructible environment...
Broken car pieces remain on the track and have a much more realistic "behavior" than forza's, IMO.
Commented on 2007-06-06 21:26:38
Nice.

It was so funny how many times he said Porche, Ferrari and Lamborghini though.

I'm interested, but i'll have to wait until after my final exams before getting it.

alimokrane On a different subject all together. if only the entire world acted like this: [url] (8 minutes ago)
  • Tiz
Tiz Gears 4 is a refinement of the Gears 3 formula, which is great if you loved Gears 3. @alimokrane: I'm partial to the Embar & Overkill. (22 minutes ago)
  • alimokrane
alimokrane @Phaethon360: I agree on the enemy variety, definataly but I simply love the little tricks and bits they added here and there. Best weapon has to be the DropShot. Ball of fun! (24 minutes ago)
  • Tiz
Tiz But with regards to variety, do you mean enemy variety? Because I agree. That is spot on. Gears 3 had so many different Locust & Lambent classes which kept Horde rounds fresh, Gears 4 does not. (44 minutes ago)
  • Tiz
Tiz PhaeKO outta nowhere. Rod said he wanted to do it right before doing it different and 343 were the blueprint for this which is why a lot of the Gears community still remains intact. (46 minutes ago)
  • Phaethon360
Phaethon360 That and the variety just isn't there. So many different enemy and weapon types in Gears 2, which was the high point of the series for me. Gears 3 wasn't bad but it was on the downswing for me. (51 minutes ago)
  • Phaethon360
Phaethon360 I really dislike Gears 4. Horde 3.0 was a disappointment, and the mechanics haven't changed much since Gears 1. After playing the remake so soon it just felt like more of the same. (52 minutes ago)
