Mafia 2: The story continues

Mafia 2: The story continues

To all DLC lovers, you should be pleased to hear that Mafia 2 will extend its main story with a new adventure focused on Joe Barbado, Vito Scaletta's best friend. The player will be able to find out what happened during the several years they spent apart from each other. I won't say more but be warned that there is a major spoiler in the press release.

Press release:

Thursday 16th September - 2K Games announced today that Joe’s Adventures, the third action-packed downloadable game add-on for the epic crime game, Mafia® II, is coming worldwide to the PlayStation®Store for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC later this year.

Joe’s Adventures continues the prodigious crime drama of Mafia II through the eyes of Joe Barbaro, Vito Scaletta’s best friend, during the time that Vito spends in prison. The game add-on extends the original narrative of Mafia II by combining a dramatic storyline with intense arcade-style gameplay that opens up several new areas in Empire Bay and items for players to get their hands dirty with.

Impulsive and unpredictable, Joe Barbaro has been at Vito’s side since childhood. That is, until Vito gets caught and sent to prison. In Joe’s Adventures, Joe uncovers the truth behind Vito’s prison sentence and what’s really going on in the Clemente family.

Joe’s Adventures offers an engaging narrative and allows players to explore new locations, including a train station, the cathouse, a boat yard, a seasonally changing lakefront and some never-before-seen buildings in Empire Bay. This exciting new chapter in the Mafia II saga includes new clothing, collectibles and even more classic 40’s and 50’s music. In addition to the story-based missions, Joe’s Adventures opens up a slew of optional city-based quests packed with arcade action gameplay and a points-based system that allows players to move up the ranks on the online leaderboard through combos and multiplier bonuses. Deadly executions by head shot or charged explosives rack up points, and precision-timed vehicular power slides, lofty jumps and feats of supercharged speed maintain the adrenaline-charged fun for extensive replayability.

I loved this game. Even though it was flawed (lack of side missions, among other flaws), even after playing it, I thought that it had the potential to be something truly awesome had the devs more time to circumnavigate issues in the game (or maybe the devs were simply holding back, which would constitute DLC abuse). In particular, I liked Joe Barbaro - it should be interesting playing in the Mafia II world from his perspective. Even more interesting, would be seeing the entire game from his perspective, not just for the six years Vito was on the inside.

So far I have abstained from purchasing any DLC for Mafia II . . . there is a very good reason why they gave The Betrayal of Jimmy away for free, and in all honesty, from what I have seen of Jimmy's Vendetta, they should have given that away for free as well. I think Joe's Adventures is the first DLC pack that I actually feel is worth purchasing. Hopefully, they will address many of the issues that held back the main game, in this and in all future DLC.

I hope that they will remove the "Explorer" achievement at the same time this DLC get's released. Who on earth want's to drive 1000 miles in the city?

GriftGFX Even games with robust toolkits are often enhanced by third party tools. Skyrim is a good example. There's still a lot of folks playing the original version on the PC because the re-release broke (53 minutes ago)

GriftGFX Ironically the last thing I had to hack to get to run correctly was a Microsoft Game Studios title. That bodes well for the future :P (54 minutes ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth i have run some injectors/hacks on a few games to fix certain limitations of resolution or such, but not since Dark Souls 1. (1 Hour ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth i rarely use mods. last time was xcom2, and that supports mods out of the box. I'm not that into replacing models in WWE, GTAV or SFV. But ofc, for people who live for that stuff it's not a good thing (1 Hour ago)
