NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--2K today officially revealed Mafia III, the next installment in the popular series known for immersing players into a world of organized crime through rich narrative storytelling and beautifully crafted game worlds. Mafia III is being developed by Hangar 13, a new development studio under the 2K publishing label led by veteran game developer Haden Blackman. Mafia III will be available in calendar 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC.

“Mafia III continues the strong franchise tradition of a captivating story set in the treacherous and calculated world of organized crime,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Mafia III captures Hangar 13’s mantra of ‘every player story is unique’ through a cinematic narrative that responds to player choice.”

Mafia III is set in a reimagined New Orleans in 1968, one of the most tumultuous years in American history. This version of New Orleans is bustling with activity, complete with era-inspired cars, fashion and music. During this turbulent time, a cloud of corruption hangs in the air and the city has become a haven for organized crime. The Italian mob controls illegal gambling, drugs, and prostitution, while corrupt police and politicians line their pockets with the proceeds.

Mafia III follows the story of Lincoln Clay, a disenfranchised Vietnam veteran, returning from combat and looking for a home and a place to belong. Orphaned as a child, Lincoln at last achieves a semblance of family with the city’s black mob, finding the surrogate father and brother he has longed for. But when Lincoln’s new family is betrayed and slaughtered by the Italian mob, he becomes fixated on revenge and wages a brutal war against the Italians, disrupting the balance of power in the seedy underworld of New Orleans. As the story progresses, Lincoln allies himself with other criminals and builds an empire and a new family of his own that transforms the city.

Throughout the riveting story of Mafia III, players choose their path to revenge and build their own crime empire using cunning, stalking and deception, or through overwhelming force and firepower. Mafia III combines the best of cinematic storytelling with a dynamic narrative structure that responds to player choices, set in a vibrant city that responds to Lincoln’s actions.

“The Mafia franchise is known for its immersive sense of time and place, and for presenting compelling stories about life within organized crime,” said Haden Blackman, studio head and creative director at Hanger 13. “In Mafia III, we are introducing players to an unexpected new anti-hero and an iconic city to explore, all within a hard-boiled drama set during one of the most turbulent years in American history.”

Mafia III will be available in calendar 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation®4 system and Windows PC. Mafia III is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on Mafia III, subscribe on YouTube, follow us on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook and visit

Black guy as a main character.... it is not Mafia. And it has nothing to do with racism.

An example of slapping on the series name for the sake of brand recognition and that only. There is nothing left from Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven in this, not even developers are the same.

Actually it does, since not every Mafia needs to be a white guy, especially in regards to the story in this game, in which a white guy as the protag wouldn't make sense.

People might want to do some research. You guys do know there was Russian mob, Asian mob, Irish mob, black mob etc.. It's nice that there changings things up for a bit, imo the Italian mafia has been overdone for years either in movies or games.

Visuals look very meh and last gen as all hell. very disappointing compared to other sandbox games. Oh and by the way black gangsters did exist - Bumpy Johnson and Frank Lucas to name a couple.

Well, then maybe they shouldn't have shoehorned it into series that are named MAFIA.

I cannot consider this a Mafia game as well... And btw the trailer is clearly CGI, because the screenshots look rubbish. Even compared to Mafia 2. I remember those first screenshots were awesome.
I hope Hangar 13 won't blow the fantastic series!

Just wait until the game comes before passing judgment, mafia means "organized crime" so their not just slapping a name on it just because. It's change of things so there is nothing wrong with that.

I think they're trying to expand on the series like GTA. So, it doesn't matter what the protagonist is as long as it takes place in an area or time period where there was organized crime.

Frankly, none of that matters if the game is garbage, or sliced into pieces and sold for three times its value.

  • Melmoth
Melmoth @jmd749: OLED is king for watching movies, and especially if you sit off-center (5 Hours ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth @jmd749: FALD can be a bit hit and miss, depending on how many zones and how aggressive it's programmed to work. Like the Q8 that's got far fewer zones (causing glow around bright objects) (7 Hours ago)
  • jmd749
jmd749 I'm excited for you, that is a beast of a television, with far superior HDR performance than any OLED with minimal to no burn-in issues. :P (10 Hours ago)
  • jmd749
jmd749 When I got my OLED 2017 FALD panels were more expensive, it's good to see they've dropped in price. I'd probably have bought the same as you, cause tbf FALD with just under 500 zones is good for a 65" (10 Hours ago)
  • jmd749
jmd749 @Melmoth: 15ms latency is pretty good and 2K nits will make for some very good HDR viewing, though a higher electricity bill. :P Agreed, I play old games on my PC monitor to avoid burn in on my OLED. (10 Hours ago)
