Video PC Xbox 360 PS3

Are the guys at Piranha Games working on a MechWarrior 5 ? That's the question everyone has been asking ever since they leaked two very short in-engine teaser videos.

They show close-up shots of a giant robot walking in the middle of a city. The place seems deserted but the presence of an apparently normal car seems to indicate that the game takes place nowadays. Neither Piranha Games nor the people who bought the licensing rights of the MechWarrior franchise answered any of our mails so it seems we won't know anything more for now - except that Piranha is indeed working on a "triple-A" on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. Fingers crossed.

Update: Well, looks like the rumors were right. If you're not familiar with the MechWarrior universe, "Davion" is the name of the family which regents the Federated Sun, one of the major military powers of the game's world. It is represented by a sword and a shining sun in a red circle.

4 seconds ??

Its hardly a teaser trailer and more of a screenshot ina video. It's obviously a mech and very much fits the MW design.

Its about time tbh. I thought MS had some sort of stake in the MW franchise though...

Smith & Tinker don't own the MechWarrior franchise, Microsoft does. Smith & Tinker are just licensing it, kind of like Lego licenses the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilm.

In any case, I can't wait to see how the situation develops.

@nostradamus - It's not Piranha Bytes, it's Piranha Games. Two different developers.

Piranha Bytes, I would almost be relieved. But it's Piranha Games we're talking about, the makers of the last Transformers game. Anyway, we'll see. At least it looks very good, from the little we've seen.

I doubt it will be for PS3 since Mechwarrior is a Microsoft owned IP.

No.
I'd have to agree with him actually.

Mechassault 2 was brilliant. Microsoft was so foolish to release it in the wake of Halo 2's online domination. If they would have waited a few more months before releasing it when they did, it would have been bigger. I would kill for MA3

Then you've never played a true MechWarrior game.

MechWarrior is like Forza to MechAssault's Mario Kart.

I'm not sure that makes it a better series (actually, isn't MechAssault the "sub"series to MechWarrior? Well, anyway...).
Kinda depends on what you are looking for in your mech game, but I can appreciate both styles at different times.
Though I think I pounded away at the Assault games more than the Warriors.

It's about time for a new MechWarrior though, so bring it on.

Like I said, it's the same difference as between Forza (or Gran Turismo, if you swing that way) and something like Mario Kart.

Sure, if you like Mario Kart, that's cool, I love that game as much as anyone. But as fun as it might be, there's not much depth to it. A game being fun is all well and good, but sometimes it's nice when games transcend being mere entertainment, to portray an *experience* that's more than just being an interface between you and a high score, and I think it's that balance that separates good games, like MechAssault, from great games, like MechWarrior.

Of course, you can go off the other end and have so much depth it's not any fun, like Spore, but that's a discussion for another day.

Hopefully there will be some commitment behind this as MS (in their infinite wisdom!?) pretty much dumped the franchise for not selling enough copies back on the original XBox. For me it was the most interesting franchise they had going for them and perfect for big improvements in the current generation.

I don't know. I feel like the lifespan of a more sim based mech game is a lot shorter than of the arcade style that Mechassault was. That's just me though.

Regardless, Mechassault and Crimson Skies are two examples of viable franchises that are just going unused by MS. They seem like such obvious money machines I don't get it.
