I love the style of this, looks awesome. But it looks to play like a dynasty warriors title, which kinda puts me off.

I assumed it to be 1v1 like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Stormwhatever?

I can't believe these Dynasty Warriors clones sell... Ken's Rage had to be one of the worst games I've ever played, and I love Hokuto no Ken

Why would you ever phototexture something, then cell shade it? makes no sense >_<

Cos it looks cool as hell, crackdown, darkness 2, borderlands...all very purdy imo.

None of those games do that. They have a much more painted look to th textures. This just looks like..they slappeda photograph on there, hit the toon button in Maya and done. Looks awful imo :P

It's the same principle tho, it's cel shading on top of a textured model, rather then, say, the naruto games, which was traditional cel shading, hell, these images even show sketch lines as shadows, which is used in an attempt to approximate the manga. It reminds me of valkyria chronicles, another game i thought looked great. Just gives it a bit of uniqueness in the art department imo. It's the one thing that will get me renting it, cos the dynasty warriors gameplay sure isnt going

It's the same principle in that it's got diffuse maps instead of vertex color, yes, but that's pretty much any game ever post launch lineup for PS1 :P

What i'm saying is that the photo texture on is shorts, vest and hat look rather jarring with the would-be ink shading effect and the cell shading. I just think it'd look a lot better if they had hand painted the stuff instead, making it look more like something in the vein of Borderlands or Valkyria Chronicles (shitty art aside that is, because One Piece can never be made to look good as the art is just fucking awful from the get go).

i mean, really?

Don't knock it till you try it... specially if you have watched every anime episode...

The idea is that you gotta fight scrubs before you meet the major characters to give you hours and hours of gameplay instead of just a half hour game...

The other way to think about it is that the Dynasty Warriors type gameplay (really it more like originated via SEGA's Spike arcade series) is that this is a 2d side scroller but in 3d polygon game and given the human programming limitations as well as funding and current hardware limitations as well you have to sacrifice multiplayer coop for single player... eventually these game programmers will get better and hardware will be more powerfull but currently there is no guarantee of break even sales (unlike CoD series...) so we will eventually start seeing these 3rd person beat-em ups incorporate coop in the future that does not degenerate into deathmatch multiplayer.

Also I happen to have purchased Ken's Rage aka Hokuto No Ken... and I have seen the old anime, the film and the OVAs as well as played previous incarnations of games based on that anime... the game has its limitations but its still great as long as you understand how the anime was and as I already mentioned elsewhere...

these Dynasty Warrior type 3rd person beat-em ups are no different than Star Wars The Force Unleashed series... at least they don't abuse the canon by having some overpowered dink emo (who demonstrates more power than established canon characters as your main character) but you still have to go on a murder spree of endless waves of clone troopers in those games...

I know One Piece is huge in Japan, but does it have much of a following in the west? Are they just hoping that Dynasty Warriors fans will be attracted to it?

It really does not matter if its big in the West or not, we are getting a subtitled copy with no crappy English voice actors, that is a huge plus in my book, I would wager if the game sells decent they might justify eventually doing English voice actors... but really most of the time they ruin the translation that way by adding too much dialogue that was never mentioned to begin with.

Also it depends how you watch anime, alot of anime fans eventually just go and watch the subtitled stuff because of the editing, censoring (due to cultural and sometimes unfair reasons while other animated shows on CN have worse offensive content) so if you never watched One Piece it will not mean much to you as a videogame... just like if you never watched Star Wars and then you played The Force Unleashed and pointed out all the problems ....

What's up?
  • Tinks
Tinks I didn't understand why he played so poorly either though. Subasic has been amazing the rest of the tourney. A big reason they won against Denmark and Russia (5 Hours ago)
  • Tinks
Tinks @MrWhite: I agree. Penalty like that shouldn't happen in a WC final. Croatia's keeper was screened for almost all of those goals, aside from the deflection (5 Hours ago)
  • nostradamus
nostradamus @Melmoth: oh god, that is amazing. the sounds and visuals are insane for a sim. (5 Hours ago)
  • MrWhite
MrWhite @droezelke: For both them? Mbapp was 20 odd yards out. His positioning was shite. Should never have let that one past him. (6 Hours ago)
  • droezelke
droezelke If FIFA didn't object so long to get a VAR, the concept could have been bug-fixed 10 years ago. (7 Hours ago)
  • droezelke
droezelke @Tinks: The VAR is an exvellent tool, but the rules applied to the VAR are restricting them from intervening. Also, the hands-rule is so ill defined that it's completely open to interpretation. (7 Hours ago)
