Operation Flashpoint 3 announced

Codemasters today announced Operation Flashpoint: Red River, to be released on PS3, X360 and PC in 2011. There have been a few ramblings about it the last week but here are some new details and renders.

Codemasters press release:

Friday 6th August/... Operation Flashpoint®: Red RiverTM, an all-new chapter in the tactical shooter series is now in development and will debut in 2011, Codemasters® announced today. Set to deliver an authentic and intensely personal US Marine Corps infantryman experience, Red River’s epic campaign will be played out on a deadly new battlefield set in the remote yet beautiful country of Tajikistan along the Vakhsh River.

Taking a small step into the future, Red River depicts a fictional conflict with contemporary geopolitical themes, which will unfold over three distinct acts in both single player and drop-in-drop-out co-operative play for up to four players online. Faced with new counter-insurgency combat and the returning threat of the Chinese PLA, players will feel the tension, brutality and carnage of modern conflict from the perspective of a marine fireteam on deployment in a hostile country, thousands of miles from home.

Building extensively on the successes of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, Red River brings wide-ranging advancements including a deeper narrative-led campaign, streamlined inventory and control system, a refined enemy and squad AI system, player class roles including customisable XP upgrades and loadout choice, close-quarters combat, new air support options and comprehensive tutorials.

“Operation Flashpoint: Red River is being built around four player co-op online play, complete with a strong narrative, new enemies and combat scenarios to deliver gameplay that immerses players in the reality of war like never before. The new setting of Tajikistan is a diverse and exciting backdrop for the wide range of military challenges the US Marines face around the world in real life. We’re excited to push the series in new directions while staying true to the core tactical combat that is the hallmark of Operation Flashpoint,” said Sion Lenton, Creative Director.

“In creating Operation Flashpoint: Red River, we’re building on our strengths whilst taking on board feedback from the community and focussing on key areas and enhancements to further refine the Flashpoint experience,” said Adam Parsons, Executive Producer. “Whether playing solo or co-operatively, players will experience the tense and exhilarating tactical gameplay the series is famed for, expressed through a range of gameplay enhancements and an exciting new setting and narrative.”

Refining the Operation Flashpoint co-op infantry experience further, players will be able to team up with their friends to play through additional co-operative game modes. Whether escorting a convoy to safety under heavy fire, or falling back from the enemy against almost insurmountable odds, each unique mode will test players’ tactics and teamwork in distinct ways. New player class roles mean that gamers can play the way they want, honing skills in their chosen fields as they rank up through the new XP reward system and customise their equipment with numerous upgrades.

Taking the tactical infantry shooter to a deadly new battlefield where one bullet can kill, Operation Flashpoint: Red River will set a new standard for authentic and intense tactical combat when it arrives in 2011 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC. For ages? The previous game is from 2009.

Can they make it look like the target renders? Let's hope so.

the latest OF was horrible to look at

yay! more renders of what the game will look nothing like. Remember the first target renders of OF2? how i had my little heart all of a flutter at the possibility of them...*sigh*

how about some dedicated servers instead of laggy p2p this time

This is a joke, they totally abandoned any efforts at fixing OFP2 even though it was a steaming pile which could have been decent if they made a few minor changes.

I definitely wont be buying this as it sounds like more of the same.

I just read on IGN that this won't have multiplayer.... I mean the previous was one was a steaming pile of shit but instead of trying to improve and get closer to the original they just give up..

I don't think code masters is going to redeem themselves....

MAYBE on the pc they can make it look like the renders but on consoles it will probabyl look horrible just like the last one. But i think they should be able to make the game look pretty good on consoles if they tried. Just look at the game RAGE it looks awesome

I agree about the renders looking good, but so were the renders for Dragon Rising and that was one of the ugliest games of this gen! Dragon Rising was my biggest disappointment of this generation, (nothing they promised was in the game), so I have no faith in this one. Not to mention they have said they are going for more of a COD style game (destroying the ONLY thing that made OF games unique).

Shouldn't be using the name Operation Flashpoint.

A CoD style game and no MP?

What's the point in purchasing this?

exactly, though if it is all CoD like, nobody would notice it if not for the name :/

did anybody play multiplayer in OF2 outside of co-op? To be honest i wasnt even aware that there was traditional multiplayer (deathmatch, team deathmatch, CTF) in it.

Co-op IS still gonna be there.. hopefully they can polish the hell out of that instead, as i would think thats where a game like this shines?

Maybe they shouldn't, but knowing that you are the Arma II Bis Forum moderator Dwarden, it's a bit biased, no?

If ArmaII and the new Operation Flashpoint would merge (throw away the horrible ArmaII engine, make the UI more untuitive like in OF:DR, deliver the online experience from ArmaII), we would have a classic war simulation/game.

Dwarden? Bit far off the mark I'm the mighty Placebo, BIS Community Manager blah blah, and sure of course I'm biased, but considering all the BS CM threw around last year with their "we created Flashpoint we're awesome ra ra" it's to be expected I'll have the hump somewhat with them ;)

As for the "horrible ArmA II Engine", CM had £12-15m to throw at their "Flashpoint" and the best they could come up with was a shallow BF clone yet our "horrible" engine offers an open world mil sim experience that has no match on PC so I think we're the ones on the right path ;)

nice!! lets hope they sort out the Horrible AI out!, if true about No Multi then they are making a big boo boo.

Hey don't knock BF3 yet. There hasn't been a proper battlefield game in five years.
