GSY Preview PS4

The Paris Games Week just opened its doors this morning, welcoming those who had spent the night waiting in line hoping to get one of the 500 Prestige Edition packs promised by Activision for the first visitors of the Call of Duty: Ghosts booth. Though it was pretty interesting to study the human condition and see those guys packed like cattle in the middle of the night, one of the real highlights of our evening there yesterday was our first hands-on session with Killzone: Shadow Fall. The single player demo only included one level but at least we had time to play though it and capture the whole thing. Video and impressions inside.
Update: Contrary to what I thought the single player mode isn't locked to 30 but varies from 30 to 60, so I've encoded a 60 fps version of the video!

Impressions


This first contact with Killzone: Shadow Fall was really promising overall, although it was clear that AI needed a bit more polish to offer a good challenge and more cunning enemies. Visually speaking, the game looks gorgeous with tons of details, great textures and realistic lighting, and there is no way it could be mistaken for a current gen title. Gameplay wise, the level which was showcased was pretty linear and didn't leave much freedom to the player, but it was effective enough to prove that the new DualShock can finally provide good sensations in a first person shooter. With the promise of more open environments and a more tactical approach with the use of the drone, this new installment in the series should be well worth the generation leap for the fans of the genre. Now of course, we'll have to wait until the final build is in our hands to know for sure if the game will deliver a solid enough single player experience. When all is said and done though, what we've seen leaves us rather optimistic concerning Guerilla's new baby. Stay tuned for more as the final release approaches.

what difficulty was it played on? all the footage of this area i've seen, the player doesnt seem to take much damage at all...is it on easy for demoing purposes?

Seems like some pretty cool set pieces for the SP. I'm in it for the mp but this looked pretty good.

In no way this looks like a current gen game, but I did expect more from it tbh. Still looks amazing and a day one for me.

It's great that you bring us these offscreen videos but why you don't get close enough to fill the entire screen with the footage? This video has like 50% of wasted space.

the environments look stunning.. they really don't do the character models and face animations any favours. AI looks typical killzone. AI came a long way this generation I hope we see similar improvements next.

Also the fact that you're nolonger 4foot tall must be welcome too

killzone 2/3 had great AI (on-par with fear imo)...but you did have to increase the difficulty to see it, much like halo. on lower difficulties they where completely retarded.

In person does the 1080p make a big difference compared to BF4 running at 900? How would you compare this to the other ps4 games in person?

Not nearly as much as poor campaigns and horrible balancing issues. The maps have been pretty awful at times as well not to mention the worst in class control issues. But from everything I have read GG are trying really hard to make sure all these problems are sorted.

I for one have pretty high hopes for this game, despite how lackluster 2 and 3 were.

Killzone 2's multiplayer had that weird control lag but was still fun IMO. Singleplayer was pretty sweet minus that insanely hard final boss.

GG had wayyyyyy longer dev time. They said so in an interview. I think its a safe bet the next BF and CoD will be 1080p

BF4 is cross gen title, Killzone SF is made from scratch specifically to pull alot of power and resources from PS4...and its GG so its no wonder how they pulled it off.

looks solid, big vistas and all. however those NPCs don't look very next gen, character animations also look very current gen. It seems battlefield 3 still set the bar pretty high.

yeah the next one can be... but its obvious why BF4 isnt

both games are launch and have deadlines, it would take FAR longer to optimize BF4 to run at 1080p cause all of the things it needs to process
