Press release:

CAPCOM CONFIRMS NEW RESIDENT EVIL®: OPERATION RACCOON CITY AND DEMO VERSION OF RESIDENT EVIL® REVELATIONS

Latest iterations of horror coming to home console, PC and handheld
San Mateo – March 29, 2011 – Capcom® a leading worldwide developer and publisher of videogames, today announced Resident Evil®: Operation Raccoon City, is in development for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and PC. In addition it was also confirmed that the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS™ title, Resident Evil®: The Mercenaries 3D,will ship with a playable demo of Resident Evil® Revelations.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is collaboration between Capcom and Vancouver based studio Slant 6 Games and is scheduled for release this Winter. Since the launch of the first title 15 years ago the Resident Evil® series has enjoyed phenomenal success, selling over 45 million units worldwide to date. This latest offering will take the series in a completely new direction and offer a style of gameplay yet to be seen from the franchise.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City delivers a true third person team based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe and a reinterpretation of the events depicted in Resident Evil® 2 and Resident Evil® 3. The setting of the Resident Evil universe not only provides a rich backdrop to the action but delivers a unique and thrilling triple threat battle. Zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) add to the mix as players not only compete against an opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element, creating a brand new style of gameplay and breaking the conventions of traditional team based shooters.

It is September 1998 and the action centers once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella’s actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.

Expect the return of original Resident Evil enemies, iconic landmarks such as the Raccoon City Police Department and fan favorite characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, who as a rookie police officer in Raccoon City is on your hit list to eliminate. Players will experience a retelling of classic moments from past titles Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 and watch the events unfolding from the menacing perspective of the Umbrella Security Service, giving fans the chance to rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak.

In addition, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will deliver a number of competitive online multiplayer modes. Each one of these will provide a unique gaming experience thanks to the three way combat between the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Ops and threat of zombies and B.O.W’s that could only exist in the deadly and twisted Resident Evil Universe.

Purchasers of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, scheduled for release in the coming months, will get an extra taste of horror thanks to the addition of a playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations. Set on board an ocean liner, the demo lets players take control of one of the full game’s characters, Jill Valentine, as she explores the ship’s dark interior, killing any mysterious creatures that emerge from the shadows. A brand new title built from the ground up for the Nintendo 3DS, further details on Resident Evil Revelations will be revealed at this year’s E3.

Talk about melodramatic. As if this is the first RE spin-off that's not third person or survival horror.

It's the first time, this is being called a shooter explicitly though, which clearly marks a complete departure from the stop and shoot mechanic of the resident evil franchise.

I will wait to see how this turns out but any hopes of resident evil returning to what it once was are pretty much dead, really.

Slant 6 Games. This is even worse than having Digital Extremes making a Darkness sequel, and I thought it couldn't get any worse than that.

This isn't Resident Evil 6. Did you freak out when they announced Gun Survivor too?

The zombie meatshield!

I expect really bad game from Slant Six. I thought these guys aren't in the business anymore after SOCOM Confrontation...

this sounds awful. not only does it just sound ridiculous gameplay and ideas wise. but it's helmed by a development studio that almost KILLED socom. (granted they patched it to a playable level, but it was just broken when it came out)

WTF is with capcom this gen. do they make their own games anymore? all i see from them is outsourcing, outsourcing, outsourcing. yes, they're japanese, yes, they want to appeal to the western audience, but this isn't the way to do it. hiring a bunch of second rate developers to handle some of your key franchises is a STUPID idea (ninja theory rebooting DMC anyone?) and has only resulted in failures so far. i don't see this being any different.

from scans i seen in POM the game is looking good, and slant 6 had hard job coding for the ps3 for there first major game on system, but socom C turned out a good game in the end, and least they have better understanding of the ps3 sdk now

I been waiting for something like this for so long, for them to finally return to the Raccoon City setting. Excited me to see this when i saw the news, but now its kinda disappointing to see everyone here hate the idea of it. kind of like getting really excited to show off your new Roller Backpack at school when you were a kid only to realize later on that its the dorkiest thing you could have in any school.

unlike a roller backpack though, the scans don't actually look bad at all despite all these "THIS IS AWFUL!" comments trying to make it look bad. I am excited for this game despite what everyone else thinks, and though it may not be the same resident evil, it is still in that familiar setting i loved when I first played this game all those years ago. even if it is just a game separate from the franchise, it should still be fun all on its own.

mustacio screw the haters, I agree with you 100% bro I can't wait for this, the people who hate on this are the people who criticize everything, meh their opinion isn't important to me, I saw the scans and this is looking to be what we want dude, so cheer up, Im with you on this one.

Why would anyone want to hire Slant 6 to develop anything other than a PSP game after SOCOM: Confrontation? I'm happy about a new Resident Evil, just not so happy about the developer. Hopefully this wont suck... hopefully.

Maybe this might turn out to be the one good game out of Japanese outsource projects (Dark Void, Bionic Commando, DMC, Silent Hill Homecoming)?

At least it has ambition.

because 5 is garbage. the coop ruined the hole game. in a SH game i want to be alone. i dont want a stupid bot as partner and i want a game thats longer than 6h. in RE 4 took me 20h the first time but everybody knows RE4 is way better than 5.

Resident evil is not a silent hill, there entirely diffrent type of game, same genre yes, but that is all they have in common, silent hill was never action based, resident evil has always been

Resident evil 4 is better than 5 thats a given, but 5 is still a enjoyable experience, and more CoOp games the better imo, the only thing that let it down was the AI of your partner was lacking to say the least, but it was not enough to destroy the game based on 1 flaw.
Yes resident evil 5 was also a shorter game than 4, but i found 5 to have a lot more replay to it and that is before you count the multiplayer, but i never played that..

for me the stupid bot ruined the whole game and i never finished it by myself. i have nothing against coop but not in a SH game. more replay??? i played RE4 like 30 times through RE5 just one time then i sold it. great replay to it dude. oh yeah and with SH i not mean silent hill i mean Survival-Horror. without Shinji M. there will be never a great RE again.
