GSY Review Switch

Because 2018 was a bit lacking in terms of huge Nintendo Switch exclusives, Nintendo decided early 2019 was the right time to bring back Mario in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, a port of the game which was also released on Wii U. Here is what we think about it.

Verdict

As it is usually the case with the Wii U games that get a Switch port, there is really no reason to put your money down again if you've already played the original title. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is quite old school in its design, it does not feature anything particularly new in terms of gameplay mechanics, but it remains an excellent 2D Mario to play.
The presence of New Super Luigi U and a few additional characters are welcome, especially if you have never played the game before, but we can't help but feel such ports would require more new content to be fully justified for the fans.
  • On the plus side
  • Hours of gameplay ahead of you
  • Fun multiplayer
  • Mario is back in 2D and he's still in great shape
  • On the downside
  • Nothing new for Wii U owners
  • Lack of originality
  • A bit expensive for a mere port

Agreed, but while not the best side-scrolling Mario games, they're still better than 99% of games in the same genre. So they're well worth playing because they're still very fun. Plus the kids love all the colors and sounds.

On a side note, I love the outlines in the subsections, makes them more stylish and highlights them well.

Don't like the way these games look at all, it's super outdated and feels really lazy. The game apparently has some weird quirks not present in the original wii-u release too. namely in 4 player someone has to use the cheat character Nabbit, which seems like a dumb design choice for any situation not including some kid or non-gamer who's struggling to keep up.

but mostly, this thing should not be £40+. it's a 6 year old port. what the fuck are nintendo smoking?

I haven't played this one yet, but I've heard time and time again that it's the best of the NSMB games. I can't really get behind the price though. I'll probably grab it on a sale. There are too many excellent 2D platformers to be had at a fraction of the price (on the Switch too). Not sure I'd agree that they're actually tops in the genre, but they're still capable of making very good games in the genre.

What I really want is Mario Maker 2.

Mario is more than a game after all these years ..Its more like part of us ,our childhood and one of the games that defined many of us as gamers .So even if nowadays it is not tops as it used to be back then ,it will still have a special place in our hearts .And yea , i think Nintendo knows that and asks whatever price knowing that we will not be able to resist

I don't think we disagree. It's just hard for me to justify the price when I can get several great platformers on the Switch for that price. And there's still several that I really want to play. Stuff like Celeste, Splasher, The End is Nigh, and the list goes on.
