Celebrate 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog with Sonic Generations™

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (April 18th, 2011) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. & SEGA® America, Inc., today announced details of Sonic Generations™, the highly anticipated video game title in development to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. Delivering the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new, Sonic Generations™ sees Sonic the Hedgehog playable as both the much loved classic 1991 character, and the modern day video game hero he has become in this exciting new fast paced adventure. Sonic Generations™ will speed into stores for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system later this year.

Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognisable environments of Sonic Generations™ have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic’s most recent adventures. Each incarnation of Sonic in Sonic Generations™ comes complete with his trademark special move, Spin Dash and Spin Attack for Classic Sonic, and Homing Attack and Sonic Boost for Modern Sonic. An innovative new interactive menu system allows for complete immersion in Sonic’s universe with favourite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game.

“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way”

Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time. As a result he encounters some surprises from his past history including Classic Sonic, Sonic as he appeared in 1991. Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic must defeat this strange new enemy, save their friends, and find out who really is behind this diabolical deed...

Picture 8.... Ugh.... They really need to work on the bridges and ESPECIALLY those... splinters? They look terrible, especially because they look like they are just barkless logs someone took a picture of from afar and then slapped on the models.

And thus the Sonic developement cycle begins again:
First screens and info are promising and excite the bruised fans.
Then the game gets some stupid gimmicks.
Finally, the game comes out and is a piece of shit on par or worse than previous Sonic game.

It's like they have totally different textures!

Obligatory Sonic Cycle

Nothing like the classic from 1991. Repeat...nothing.

Actually Sonic Unleashed has sold over 3 million copies and Sonic Colours is close to 2 Million copies

Early impressions say that "new sonic" gameplay is like a giant QTE. And "old sonic"... well, after sonic 4 i don't know what to think.

It looks like Sonic Unleashed because of the 2D and 3D view. I like the older Sonic though lol. I'm still waiting for Sonic CD to be released on XBLA,, IF they ever do it...

Nice find. The 3D gameplay looks like a copy and paste of Sonic Unleashed. I was kinda hoping it to be more like Sonic Adventure... I wonder what they'll do with the other characters since sonic has two versions himself now.

Wow. This looks... promising? Will inevitably be a let-down, though. So I won't get too excited.

Love the classic Sonic on the right. Now just head shot the other one and we have got ourselves a memorable great game.

Graphics look nice but I bet it a) splutters along at 30fps, and b) is full of instant death blind jumps.

Even the much hyped Sonic 4 wasn't up to much. My confidence in Sega is at an all time low.

I think i've already fallen for it, that gameplay video was amazing and the sense of speed is mind blowing! Far beyond anything i've ever seen, this is how fast sonic should be!

Have none of you played Sonic Colors? It was really well received.

About the game

What's up?
  • crookedmind
crookedmind ... I can't even think of what they want. Maybe expecting CoH or AoE or even a Starcraft like game, but it's not even trying to be a strategy game like that. (1 Hour ago)
  • crookedmind
crookedmind @rayy: I think so. If I hit on something later in the game that I haven't gotten to yet I'll let you know, but so far I don't see any control flaws. (1 Hour ago)
  • crookedmind
crookedmind If you took the sword work and handling from Witcher and put it in Skyrim, you have the ultimate game in that genre. Mods made Skyrim in my opinion; vanilla was stunted outside of stealth backstabbery (1 Hour ago)
  • MikeManiac61
MikeManiac61 @GriftGFX: Both games in my eyes had spotty combat. I played W3 for its story and life. As for Skyrim, the vanilla version of the game felt bland without the mods. (3 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX And I think the gameplay that is there is pretty janky and pretty shallow. (3 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX I get that you think Skyrim is crap, but The Witcher 3 aint "a good version of Skyrim" because they have totally different goals. TW3 doesn't even attempt half the systems that Skyrim does. (3 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX @KORNdog: Nah, that's *really* not all there is to it. You're comparing a broken apple with a poorly designed orange. (4 Hours ago)
