The first 10 minutes: 3D Dot Game Heroes

DjMizuhara sent us the first 10 minutes of 3D Dot Game Heroes, the strange but certainly charming old-school RPG from From-Software.
Update 2: DjMizuhara has uploaded a second video for us. Note that the DE 1 & 2 servers are now back.

Made for the PSP Would Be = Win. For the PS3 = Epic FAIL!

Seems pretty cool to me... a throwback to the old days, but the video is pretty choppy. I'm not sure if it's the game or the capture, but there's no reason for a game like that to have a bad frame rate lol

No the PS3 needs games like this and i doubt that the PSP could handle all of that pixelation.

i kinda expected a game with such a basic art/graphic style to be chock full of environmental "decoration", but this looks pretty bland and empty, i mean, surely they can get more then a few trees and bushes in the environment?

I'm re encoding the video now...I've no idea why it's so choppy...the game is as smooth as silk not sure whats going on there. It's encoded just like everything else I've encoded. I'll update the video with the encoded video soon. Sorry about that!

Ah so it's an Action Adventure game, always thought it was an RPG. In other words from what I can see, an Zelda clone. But overall it could be fun.

To bad the water effect in the game is totally killing me however.

Kinda like the LBP aesthetic? Simple, but filled with eye-candy. Not going on here.

In fact, the only thing that's graphically interesting is the DOF effect used here. It gives the effect that you're looking at a tiny world through a macro lens. That should have been used for the Lego games if you ask me.

And From Software went from Demon's Souls to this? Wow.

Finally, what's with that sword?

You guys know it's SUPPOSED to be a Zelda clone with blocky, spacious 8-bit environments blown up to 3D, right?

Right?

...

Guys?

Amazing there is almost nothing I like about it. The only thing I like the idea of it but this is not a revival of what made these old games great but what made them atrocious.
And how the hell did they manage to include frame drops in such a basic optic anyway?
I will stay away from it…

SWORD, big enough?
Commented on 2009-11-04 15:23:25
People complaining about the size of the sword should watch more than the prologue...

Will this be a full priced game or is it released on the PSN?
Commented on 2009-11-04 16:47:22
it's a full priced game...well it is here in Japan.

I like how the cute little bunnies disintegrate into small snippets.

Despite seeming to own up to Zelda (mainly LttP appearantly), it doesn't have a patch on feeling or style when compared to those Link adventures. Which is a shame, because I would like to play something close to Zelda gameplay, but with a little more maturity to the story (which this game still might hold). And at a full retail price I don't see this doing very well outside of Japan, at a lower "PSN price" it might. I feel Trine is already too expensive and that seems to cater a lot more atmosphere and polish than this. Hope to see something more from 3D Dot Game Heroes, maybe later dungeons and story execution might explain or show a hidden depth I seem to be missing.

DJ my question as always: is there english text, menus etc. in the japanese version?

The music makes me wanna fire up my SNES and play some ALttP. Great work.

However, I don't like 3D Dot Game Heroes, mainly for its looks... obiously the devs tried to mix the vibe of the 16-bit era with modern technology, but it just ends up looking odd in my opinion.

I feel like starting a Zelda discussion! ^_^

I wish someone would blatantly clone Ocarina of Time, imho the best game of the series and unreached by each one of its successors. Nintendo should do it, but they won't drop this "innovate everything" mentality. Seeing TLoZ: Spirit Tracks gives me no hope whatsoever in the new Zelda title for Wii that's in the works right now. ST is probably a great game (is it already released? I dunno), just like Phantom Hourglass, but I think most Zelda fans want a new OoT instead of Wind Waker sequels, just like I do.

Spirit Tracks is out 4th december (Europe)

Without completely derailing the thread but, I just have to state:

Zelda: A link to the past > Everything.

100% Japanese. No English to see or hear anywhere.
Commented on 2009-11-05 02:31:20
As blimblim said...there is no English what so ever in this game. Apparantly it's out in North America next year.

whats up with all the loading screens? that's my only problem with this game.
Commented on 2009-11-05 09:03:47
It looks awful, they could have used this art style so much more effectively IMO.

Wasn't expecting much from this game and the video doesn't really make me think otherwise.

  • Seth
Seth @Moonwalker: i know that. But they should have better solution for this. All of the replayability of the game goes right in the shitter in current state. What's the point having score attack..... (2 Hours ago)
  • Moonwalker
Moonwalker The beginning is very similar to Dead Space indeed, but i really do like this atmosphere man and that mech part is good looking. (2 Hours ago)
  • Moonwalker
Moonwalker in the review that the cutscenes can't be skipped. An explanation for that could be that alot of loading screens are hidden in these cutscenes, thats what he said. (2 Hours ago)
