Video PC

Following the real-time demo Samaritan, here is a video of the Unreal Engine depicting its features and showing some nice renderings, all of that at 60fps.

First footage should become a game, cyberpunk sci fi, nice!

Though I am not a big fan of UE, but this version with the sci fi tech demo looks nice.

Well that all looks pretty amazing but it means nothing if we don't start seeing that quality in gameplay at some point in the not too distant future. Here's hoping for at least PC. Won't see it on consoles until at least 2015 so I have no idea why they are showing it already.

At least 2015? Doubt it will be that long for consoles... new systems should be coming out, what, probably holiday 2012-2013? Figure give the devs a year to get a handle on the hardware... eh, maybe that long. I'm thinking more in the mid-2013 to early-2014 range, just theory though. :P

MS has been quoted recently as saying no new Xbox until 2015. And SONY has already made it clear that their plan with the PS3 is a ten year life, so 2016 for the PS4. Console gamers are going to be waiting several more years for the graphics you see here, but I'm just hoping that doesn't hold back the PC because the PC is already at that level right now if you have the money to burn. In a couple of years those graphics will be handled pretty easily by mid range hardware on the PC. One GTX580 could run these graphics even if it may not be at 60 or even 30 fps, but there are those out there who have 3 running in SLI, and it was 3 GTX580s that ran the recent demo shown in this vid. 3 GTX580s might sound like a lot but you have to consider the other 2 cards are never close to be utilized at 100 percent. Honestly SLI and triSLI is a waste of money when you consider the poor performance to price ratio, but not long from now there will be a 1 card solution for the PC that will run that demo.

Is there any link you could provide on the quote from MS? Not doubting you on that, this is just news to me. Also, a console having a ten-year life cycle doesn't mean a new console won't be released prior to the end of that, especially considering the fact that Sony said they planned for the PS2 to have a ten year life, yet they released the PS3 in '06 - and the PS2 still had a ten year life. Aside from that, I highly doubt the lack of new consoles will hold back PCs at all, it really hasn't happened in the past that I'm aware of. If that really is the case, I am definitely making sure I get a sick PC once I do get one - I've been holding out for a long time, and have just recently been thinking of copping out and getting some pos just to get me by. I've honestly never been a PC gamer, but I think this may be the time for that to change.

That guy already "Confirmed" that he was just a student designer and that the 2015 quote isn't real.

But come on, who here would actually believe that Microsoft would drag the Xbox 360 as far as 2015? I'd start looking for the next Xbox in 2 years at the latest.

I think the new consol will be coming out much sooner. What other reason for all the different developer starting show off new engines?

we need new consoles, the graphics are looking outdated, and developers are starting to see that. Who cares about everyone else, if you and I work and we have money to buy new consoles I say why not?? shoot, keep the 360 and ps3 if you want, but for the more hardcore gamers who want power, let them buy the ps4 and xbox 3 why not

Because developing and marketing new hardware is bloody expensive, that's why.

That is one of the dumbest comments I have read.

nobody wants the next gen of consoles less than the developers. It's already too expensive for most to develope games..let alone developing games for new tech, with new engines, and selling to an install base thats nowhere near the 40+ mill the existing consoles have.

Even when the next gen of consoles hit, capable of taking advantage of all these new pretty engines, the first year of games will mostly be higher res versions of 360/ps3 games. If i wanted that right now i'd buy a PC.

Still plenty of life in this gen of consoles yet. This year alone we're still seeing a world of difference between what was offered at the start of the console cycle to whats offered now - that will but pushed further with the likes of Rage, BF3, ME3 ect

I think the only one thats going to need to step up soon in terms of hardware is going to be nintendo.. who i really cant imagine having more than 2years left before the wii starts really struggling with support. But then how drastically more powerful could their new console be when its only going to be playing 360/ps3 games for the first couple of years

I just find it good that consoles are that old. It forces developers to focus on game itself to impress people.

I am not really impressed by these fake tech demos anymore to be very honest. One character with fancy cloth physics and a barren environment with neon ads or that empty forest doesn't cut it in this day and age.

The real question is HOW MANY characters with full cloth physics can this engine support? Can it render GTAIV with all characters in the scene with those effects? What happens once you add AI and particle effects into the mix? I am guessing the engine can render two or three characters with full cloth physics in cut scenes while during gameplay only one character has cloth physics (downgraded compared to the cut scene of course).

Yeah, you are totally right. Fuck advancement of technology unless they can do it on a currently unrealistic level! I seriously can't believe how whiny people are when something that is obviously an improvement is shown. Sure, from a developer point of view i guess you could go "oh crap, even more tech stuff to do...FML" but i don't see how going "Eeeeh, they couldn't do that on a bazillion NPCs at once so it sucks!" is in any way justified from a consumer perspective.

Even if they can only do it on the main characters, that will still help a game look better than if it wasn't there at all.

Looks impressive, but this engine IMO is getting old now, just look at DICE Engine and CryEngine 3 and you will see what Im talking about.

The Crytek 3 is an impressive achievement but it's obvious that's it's pushing the Xbox too far. The frame rate struggles often and the environments are extremely linear.

If new hardware came out tomorrow, I'd be there, and I bet you would be too.

Framerate doesnt struggles, in fact Im at the end and so far I havent had a single framerate drop, not even in big setpieces where it had lots of shit on screen, levels are not linear either, you get to a set piece and that set piece is open for you to take whatever approach you want, so obviously I dont know what are talking about here.

Don't really think this is such a big improvement over the previous engine.. Little bit disappointed, was expecting a bigger leap forward to realism.

The hell are you talking about? Cry engine 2 and 3 are way more impressive than anything shown here...thing is Cry engine has been pushed to the max and we know its realistic capabilities. UE3 is just smoke and mirrors

Bah, cryEngine is beautiful, but it's all lighting and shaders. Those are huge components, but I've seen nothing in the way cloth or hair for it, and those are nasty on processors. That Samaritan vid shows some incredible stuff, and granted, it is easier to impress with such dynamic lighting, but those cloth effects are layered which is amazing for real time. Those skin shaders are phenomenal, and the reflections and shadows are incredible. Hell, the newest UE3 on the 360 is doing some great things too. My guess is the "Samaritan" footage is the high end, and that forest footageis for the current console iteration.

lol they are using same old tech demo for this video. They really have nothing in the bag. Their new engine is also an updated one. They have been milking this for long time now.

The skin shaders in Crysis 1 were fantastic...just grab and North Korean soldier and admire the beautifully rendered skin on his hands and face. The water in Cry Engine 2 is beyond anything we have seen in a game yet. And the engine is a physics BEAST...you remember the nuke debris video? More recently a tornado through forest video. Crytek obviously held a lot of stuff back since they know today's machines can't pull off those effects off.

I hope Crytek sells their engine to more developers next gen....but its going to be an uphill battle due to the module nature of UE3. At least the future of Ue3 is looking good....still I wanna see a game pulling those effects off
