GSY Video PC PS4 Xbox One

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has already made the headlines everywhere on the Internet but it only arrives on Gamersyde today. Needless to say we haven't had time to practice at all which, in such a merciless game, means we can't show you much yet. Here are a few videos showing the superb CG introduction and the game's prologue. More soon hopefully, provided we can handle the pressure.
Update: 4 videos added.

it runs like a dream on PC. I did tried ps4 version on Slim console (frame-pacing edition!). Nope, that's not the way you should play this game lol.

I really hope FromSoftware continuing their work on multiplatform titles. These games deserve a great PC versions.

As for Activision, they perfectly handled the marketing of this game. Also they did not forced From to have MTX/season pass or any other bs! This is rare to happen with AAA game these days.

It's very well optimised, I play at 3840x1600 60fps rock solid and my GPU runs at an average of 40% GPU load.

Yes, it runs like a dream on PC, like Seth said.

It should be obvious by now that From Software's games run like shit on consoles. They always have, and unless From Software changes, they walways will. Not defending From Software, they should have learned by now how to make a well optimized game on consoles, but to everyone who had the choice to play on PC or console and chose to play on console, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Aside from that, the game is difficult as hell, way more difficult than Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 or Bloodborne. I've died a lot of times on that ogre bastard before killing him. Talking about dying, without going into spoilers - and this might well be considered a spoiler of sorts - DO NOT DIE!!! (too much)

I know, it's a From Software game and the hardest they've made. But if you have died once and ressurrected, unless you're close to killing an enemy and are sure you can do it, it's best to go back to a statue and rest, so you almost always have a second chance.

Just remember what Emma (the gourd lady) at the Dilapidated Temple says. I won't say anything more.

@menghina:

Try loweering the Shadow quality setting, it has a major impact on performance. Other settings which have a major impact on performance are the Anti-Aliasing and SSAO, specially AA. This should ensure you get a rock-solid 60fps even on an old GPU.

There's also the Automatic Rendering Adjustment setting, which will adjust the graphics settings when performance starts to drop, in order to maintain the target framerate. From Software did a stellar job with the PC version.

Also, I found it better to play with HDR disabled. The colours are very washed out with HDR enabled.

Digital foundry had it running at roughly 45fps on the ps4 pro
I think that's fine

As soon as I saw those yellow scratch marks and paint dripping from ledges, my eyeballs rolled out the back of my head.

Yo! Game designers! How about you fucking have a system and design your levels so that you don't need a big fucking glow in the dark sign to show us what's climbable and what isn't? 1996 says hello!

Framerate is not the problem, it's highly unstable framepacing, which leads to an insane amount of judder and stutter. This in a game where fluidity is essential to success in combat. You lose that, you get screwed hard. It's not about skill, but about the fact that the game switches gears and you end up messing up the timing.

Below is an excerpt from Digital Foundry's analysys:

"I'm borderline speechless here: community complaints here have persisted for years now - since the launch of Bloodborne - but nothing has changed. It just does not work as it should and the result is constant, noticeable judder and stutter. It's persistent and never lets up. Even worse, there are occasional stutters over 100ms which further rob the game of fluidity."

Then there's the fact that Sekiro plays more like a Fighting game than an Action game - regardless of genre label, having it at stable and locked 60fps is miles better than at unlocked 30-45fps. Though here, even a locked 30fps would be better than 30-45fps unlocked, due to steady input and consistenty, specially with a fast-paced game with a parrying system that is the core of the gameplay and where timing is everything.

There's a reason why Sekiro is selling extremely well on PC - given it's a niche game that's hard as hell, many of the people who would have played on consoles and that have an average PC are going for the PC version because the consoles versions are messed up atm. I'm sure From Software will patch them, but I'm not sure they will fix the framepacing issue completely.

Fromsoft's engine cannot do proper frame-pacing at 30 fps it has been that way with both DS3 and Bloodborne and that's probably why they unlocked the frame-rate in Sekiro. If you can't lock to 30 with proper frame-pacing than there is no point in locking it at least you get the extra frames at 45 fps. I wouldn't expect any fixes in the future though Fromsoft most certainly knows about the frame pacing issues in their games after Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. They probably just don't think it is that big of an issue or they wouldn't design their last 3 games this way back to back on the same exact hardware. This is beyond any kind of patches at this point.

@Seth:

Btw, how far are you? I'm way off the main path, in a place I shouldn't be, given the many warnings. Still, I've managed to progress. Slowly, but surely. Also, have you managed to kill that head thing in that dark place with something blue?

@denon:

From what many people in the Soulsborne community have stated, From Software used Sony's PhyreEngine for Sekiro - same as Dark Souls 3. This engine has been used in over 200+ games, like:

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Journey, Hotline Miami, Unravel 1-2, Dragon Quest Builders, DeathSpank 1-3, Rocketbirds 1-2, OlliOlli 2, Flower, FlOw, Secret Ponchos, etc.

Sony's SIE Research & Development West Official Site:
http://develop.scee.net/research-technology/phyree...

PC Gaming Wiki - Engine: PhyreEngine:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Engine:PhyreEngine

If this engine was unable to do proper frame-pacing, all of these games would have had serious judder and stutter issues. Plus, they wouldn't been able to achieve locked 30fps or 60fps.

Spiders (French video game developer), responsible for games like: The Technomancer, Bound by Flame, Mars: War Logs, Of Orcs and Men, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, etc. Also uses their own modified version of Sony's PhyreEngine, which is called Silk Engine and all of these games use it.

Wikipedia - Spiders (company):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiders_(company)#Game_engine

Additionally, Codemasters still uses the Ego Game Technology Engine since 2007 till 2019, which itself uses PhyreEngine's cross-platform graphics engine and was co-developed with Sony.

Wikipedia - Ego (game engine):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ego_(game_engine)

When one takes into account all those other developers using the same engine, a modified version of it or parts of it extremelly well, is it the engine or the developers' fault for bad frame-pacing in From Software's games using it?

I love From Software, but like countless people have said many times before, Games' technology is not From Software' forte. Having said that, Sekiro looks stunning at 4k with all settings maxed on PC. Still, From Software just can't optimize a game properly on consoles even if their life depended on it.

My dream would be to have Naughty Dog take care of the graphics and performance, while From Software takes care of the rest. Would be a perfect game.

@Sdarts There are so many different paths to choose, i don't know if is just me, but Sekiro feels much more open than From's previous games. At times i can go fight 5 or 6 different bosses in whatever order i wish.
I'm trying to get my way through the hell Ashina Castle. Rooftops are insane lmao loving it.

Don't bother with headless thing until later on in the game. You will know when you can have easier time after receive certain thing (i don't mean divine confetti). ;p

A lot of bosses have their weakness, kinda reminds me to Zelda? You gotta figure them out. Often with the right tool you can make your life so much easier.

The many paths are indeed great, reminds me a lot of Dark Souls 1, where you can go to many places just from the Firelink Shrine alone. You can tackle the bosses in any order you want, however I'm sure the community will - if they haven't already, haven't checked Reddit yet - find the most optimal path to go through each.

Ashina Castle wasn't so hard for some reason, I believe it's because it has much more options to keep yourself hidden. Though if you're found out, on the ground 20-30 enemies surround you and on the roofs those winged bastards group up in 3-6 and gang up on you to death - though you can escape more easily on the rooftops.

The headless thing I figured it was for late game, I'm still relatively early on, because I haven't fought any other boss other than the General on Horse and another that you can't kill by normal means - don't wanna spoil anything, figure it out by accident.

Without going into spoilers, I'm at the temple with monks. Very far from the main path afaik, took me quite a while to get there, but it feels like an easier place than Ashina Castle for the most part.
