We reviewed Forza Horizon 2

We reviewed Forza Horizon 2

Forza Horizon 2 will be released in a few days now and time has come for you to see some HQ gameplay footage of the game. As usual, our full review is on the French side, but our verdict has been fully translated if you want to know what we think about the game. We'll add the last bit of the replay of yesterday's GSY Live this morning but unfortunately we lost the rest (so basically most of our stream) when my computer decided to shut down on its own without warning. That's what we call the Gamersyde effect.
Note: Today's videos and those which will be put up on Tuesday were all captured in sim mode and automatic gear using a controller.

Verdict

Let's face it, our main issue with Forza Horizon 2 is the size of its map, which will obviously have an impact on the time players will spend free riding. Aside from that, this sequel is a technically superb racing game that will definitely take you on an enjoyable ride. Races and events remind of the good old days spent on PGR and RalliSport Challenge, a resemblance that will clearly appeal to those who used to own - or still do - the original Xbox. Forza Horizon 2 also shares some of the Motorsport series' characteristics, with tuning and livery editor options and a solid physics to go with. Online modes aren't especially new with races and online road trips but they do their job well enough to keep you entertained with strangers or friends. Some of the more original modes have not convinced us that much but they're still worth a try and the departure from the usual races is rather welcome. In fact, Forza Horizon can be summed up in on phrase: the desire for more. You definitely want to spend more time driving the 200+ beautiful cars, exploring the map and admiring the views; at the same time though, you can't help but feel there should be more for you to sink your teeth into, not in terms of content, but in terms of scale. Despite that, we had a great time playing Forza Horizon 2 and we can't wait to see where the franchise is going. We'll be ready when it comes, but until then there is plenty of time to literally seek fresh fields in this second episode.
On the plus side

+ The graphics
+ The engine sounds
+ The impressive weather system and the day/night cycle
+ The number of cars and the variety that comes with it
+ The driving sensations
+ PGR/RalliSport Challenge in one game
+ Livery editor and tuning
+ HUD can be completely tweaked
+ Europe baby!
+ The music
+ The desire for more

On the down side

- The size of the game map
- The 5 minute or so road trips
- Some challenges aren't that interesting to play
- Lack of traffic, pedestrians and wildlife
- Replay system
- DLC ready?
- A Parisian abbey in the south of France
- The need for more

Maybe strange question, but could you compare the negatives of FH2 to those of Destiny? They sound alike to me.

Even though I like Destiny, I think there's more variety in terms of gameplay in FH2. Also, I was truly disappointed by Destiny's story, something that is to me very important even in a shooter. There is no such disappointment in Forza comparatively, though its lack of scale is celary an issue they need to sort out. I wouldn't mind seeing the addition of an extra map with DLC for once.

In the demo the day/night cycle went by pretty fast, too fast. Nights only lasted very briefly. How is that in the full game?

As for the map. Would you say it's the same size as FH, or smaller?

I'd say it's about the same size, with the possibility to now explore more off-road areas.

The day/night cycle seems fine but nights are shorter I think.

Thanks man!

Quite surprised footage shows the game being played without the soundtrack. It was one of the glowing aspects of horizon 1 that fed into the burning man vibe it provided.

I don't think showing 1min30 edited extracts with music on would have served the soundtrack much.

Plus, personally, Id rather listen to the car engines. ;p

On Tuesday you'll get some with music on don't worry.

The graphics look good for the most part but it seems like a shallow game... I think that's the main problem with half-arcade, half-sim games like this and Driveclub. They lack the depth of sims like GT but also lack the craziness of games like MK. It's just a pretty looking but very boring medium.

Thanks for the videos !! It looks like a better, updated version of the first game, which is fine for me.

..., this looks good but then id be really worried if the xbox one was that crap that it couldn't make a basic car game look good, lets face it is the only type of game it could make look good lol
I might be a new poster around here, but I've lurked this site for a couple of years now. How can you guys still tolerate blatant trolling and fanboyism such as this comment right here ?

Most of don't pay attention do douche remarks like that on here. This is the best place to come if you don't want to see the fanboy war on every post.

The news page is hard to keep ahead on.. especially with trolls who just use a host of accounts.

Rainbow Six Clancy (I really don't know either but this looks great).

RalliSport Challenge I guess. =P

I don't get a PGR vibe. I get a Midnight Club vibe but with slower action and no super abilities. Certainly looks better, but still seems sluggish. May be better hands on though, so I'll reserve judgement until it's in my hands. If nothing else, it's certainly some good eye candy.

Also, I could use another Midnight Club (Dub Edition Remix, not Los Angeles).

The replay video was lame but thanks for the vids.

I did what I could for the replay video, but the replay system is terrible. Actually, that is also one of the things that shoulbd be considered a negative point.

So is the map the same size as in the demo? (which is just blacked out)

Thanks for putting up some of the live feed. I don't feel so bad that I missed it now :D

That is weird. Even F1 games was not able to save replays. DC is also rumored not to have replay. That would suck, if true. Not sure how such common things devs are missing

About the game

What's up?
  • Sdarts
Sdarts So Forza Horizon 3 also benefitted from FM6: Apex. Quantum Break's PC version was Remedy's first foray into DirectX 12 development. And I also agree it seems like it was decided late in the process. (2 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts Source: [url] He was referring to Quantum Break on PC. Also, I'm sure Turn 10 shared what it learned from Forza Motorsport 6: Apex with Playground Games (2 Hours ago)

Sdarts @alimokrane: True, Remedy's Head of Communications said: "We have worked on this release for a while. We got a lot more experience in shipping DX11 titles." (2 Hours ago)
  • alimokrane
alimokrane perform very well. I am expecting Gears 4 to follow suit. (2 Hours ago)
  • alimokrane
alimokrane To be honest, QB looks great on XO. the PC port was a fiasco really.. MS shouldnt have forced them to do it. Other games which intended to have a DX12 port well early look great. ReCore and Forza H3 (2 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
    GriftGFX Not that DX12 wasn't (isn't?) over hyped :D (2 Hours ago)
  • nostradamus
nostradamus AW runs at 10fps on my laptop, when UE3 and other engines thrive running on that shit toaster. (2 Hours ago)
