Rise of the Ronin is not a looker, far from that. Worse it runs quite poorly in every mode we tested (there are three of them, Fidelity, Performance and Ray Tracing). Its approach to the open world genre is also quite dated, as it seems to get its inspiration from the Ubisoft formula, but despite all that, it is still quite an enjoyable game to play. The combat and loot systems borrow from the Nioh series and Wo Long and it can be very satisfying, especially if you like Japan and you prefer a more realistic take on the action-RPG genre. It's not the best game ever by any means, but there is something about it that had us come back for more. Now obviously, considering the price tag, it's probably best if you wait until a sale (and a bunch of patches).

Thanks for the review! FPS mode looks like it hovers between 55-60, seems to run alright?

I wouldn't say so. Oddly even with VRR it never feels as smooth as it should be. Also, in cities there are more slowdowns and it can drop to the 40s. It's still better than the 30 fps mode, which seems to have uneven frame pacing (at least).

I'm guessing you liked Ronin better than what you played of DD2 even with the Ubisoft style open world.

I had three weeks to play Ronin and not even one to play DD, which required more time to master. So I haven't discarded DD2 just yet, there are things that I do like, but some decisions they made I do regret indeed. :)

I'd argue otherwise. Despite having Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), the gameplay experience still doesn't achieve the desired level of smoothness. Additionally, when navigating urban environments, there are frequent instances of slowdowns, sometimes dipping as low as 40 frames per second. Although it's an improvement over the 30 fps mode, it seems that even that mode suffers from inconsistent frame pacing.
