Tomonobu Itagaki says there's no way other developers will beat what they're doing with Ninja Gaiden 2. He goes even further saying that those devs will lose their motivation after beholding what's coming next from them.

"GI: Games like Code Cronos and Ninja Gaiden 2 have been sort of waiting in the wings for quite a while now. Do you think we’ll be hearing some announcements about those titles in 2007?

Itagaki: I’d like to show everybody some of the new stuff that we’ve been working on in the near future. The only problem with that is that when the other developers see what we’re doing, they’re going to lose all of their motivation to create any game in the same genre, because there’s no way they can beat it."

Big words considering the weight of the titles he's refering to, just to name a couple, Devil May Cry and God of War.

LOL.. You know, I can totally relate. That's how I felt when seeing the Forza 2 car designs of some other INSANE people. I totally lost motivation after beholding that. :D

Been playing the Sigma demo like mad. God NG was/is a good game, and it totally shreds any competition (yes, even the infinitely more stylish and charming Devil May Cry). I'm surprised people weren't already put off making action games after that came out.

NG has given Team Ninja an unprecedented boost in credibility with me to the point where I almost accepted the existence of DOAX, and even though Itagaki's words are arrogant and cocky, few people can say that and actually have you go "you know.. maybe it's not just words.".

Yeah, NG Black was acid piss hard, and that really steams inside you. I hope they aint as "cheap" in NG 2. I am gonna buy the game for sure, but it is a request.

There are many devs out there that says their game is like no other and this and that, but unless they can put it on action it's easy to say than done.

But I know that Itagaki said that he is going with a new art direction with NG 2, so I hope it is more realistic and he removes all anime crap in it and make it a real game.

I don't think we should let developers get away with downplaying other efforts. I certainly didn't like when Free Radical were recently downplaying Halo and I don't like it now when Itagaki is doing what's he's doing (although he was always this way, it's just his character I think), even though I like Ninja Gaiden more than any game from the genre and I do agree with him on QTE cheapness and this "fields of cabbage" issue.

Well it sorts itself doesn't it? If the game doesn't deliver he looks like a tit and that's that. I think with Itagaki he's always been rather outspoken about the shortcomings of other games, but he's also very much expressed respect for other developers who do things he looks up to. I specifically remember how he said VF4 was going for a different style of play and that it couldn't be measured on the same merits as DOA what with their balance approach to levels and such.

I think in all these cases of a producer/director hyping his game the proof is simply in the pudding. If people don't like the product they'll dislike the person trying to sell it to them aswell. It's always a big gamble when you make these statements, but as long as you're backed up by the things you present then it's fine by me. In the end it's really about his opinion and his own views on other games, and even though he chooses a pretty unsympathetic way to present those views they are mostly quite insightful and interesting.

@ Sath - I agree the art needs some more energy than NG had, but I would think realism and grittyness would just propel it further down that road with factories and crappy airship interiors. I say bring on more mystical aspects and organic-yet-futuristic locales. Otogi isn't around anymore so go steal some of its visual flare. I think the first couple of levels of NG are the most appealing, visually, in the entire game.

Come on I want that game really badly. I hope it has even harder difficulties or missions, yeah I am a bit crazy :D NGS has at least one mission with 3 bosses at the same time NGB only had 2 :( I want PS3...

anyway, this is just classic Itagaki. He's funny. I for one don't think NG2 will look much better than Sigma really(not really a bad thing). Surprise me, Itagaki. Surprise me!

Ninja Gaiden 1 trashed the competition in the genre, it was also graphically impressive... i mean probably 1 of the BEST games in the gen graphics wise, not to mention amazing gameplay...
So him saying he made something that pushes this gen isnt being cocky, its living up to the predecessor.

NG didn't have a story, so surpassing that feat for NG2 shouldn't be that hard :P

But yeah, new enemies, locations, move list, weapons, harder difficulty(Insane huh?) etc., and I'm satisfied. All of those should be a given, so no real worries from me.
