Rockstar just uploaded its new GTA 4 trailer showing new gameplay possibilities (well, we hope so), and most importantly an excellent background and art directing. We can't wait to see more...
...WOW, that made me laugh. Did you even play Andreas? or at least see screen shots? San Andreas is the epitome of ''gangstah culture'' homie.
I make a distinction between using something as a setting and just exploiting the projected "crime is cool" MTV music video version of "the hood". I think San Andreas does it with more class and finesse than any of EA's nigh on parodic attempts (except for the most part they aren't aware of it, nor deliberately laughable), and never once does it feel like it's just capitalising on the hip hop wave. Even the music reflects that it's not mirroring the most recent top 10 on the charts, but rather paying homage to the mid 90s.
Saint's Row has a good story once you cut through the absolutely insulting exterior, but compared to the way GTA juggles its themes and satirical comments it's just completely ham-fisted.
Please don't compare SR with GTA. SR is just... bad. I played it to the bitter end and hated it. Where is the story? It tries to take itself serious and fails horribly. The main character has NO personality at all, he's just some puppet doing the dirty work for others without moving his eyelid. C.J. on the other hand was a superb character. You felt like you were one of these "gangsters" like you said, it was just more authentic than anything SR could come up.
That's why I hate the idea of character customisation, you'll never get 100% out of the story with things like that. Same goes for missions. Being able to do them in diffrent ways and in a diffrent order, most of the time, is just enough freedom. When you watch a movie you don't choose who plays in it and how the story is told. Such movies would be just horrible, so why is everyone complaining about these things? I play GTA for the story, the gameplay is lacking but it's still a great game. At least they can improve the gameplay, and I'm pretty shure they didn't use the same GTA 3 sheme.
As for the graphics: I take better style over allegendly technical superiority. The video showed me that again. Graphics are not everything, especialy in such a game when there is more weight towards other things, like the story.

yeah this game will have good graphics. they have around 120+ people or so working on this game right now and they still have 4 months to complete it. so expect this game to look way better when it comes out.
only complaint i have about this game is how empty the streets look compared to the last trailer and older screenshots. just take a look at some of the images on this site instead of the trailer and you will see how a lot of the street scenes are empty. it could be taken from a cutscene and cleared the road for it but yeah for a city based on new york it should be packed with cars and people. but thats not a big concern of mine i just want this game bad.

First lets look at the 'FACTS'.
It is completly obvious GTA has a huge fanbase, much larger then Halo.
GTAIII / GTA:VC / GTA:SA have all sold almost double that of Halo and Halo2.
Halo 1 : 6~ million
Halo 2 : 7~ million
GTA III: 12~ million
GTA VC: 14~ million
GTA SA: 15~ million
I know these are numbers, and numbers dont always represent everything... but numbers like these, show a lot.
You are right, they don't represent everything. How many more PS2s are out there than Xboxes? Wikipedia lists between 5-6 times more PS2s out there than Xboxes. Gee, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Also, numbers don't mean shit when it comes to quality. Blood Diamond, an amazing movie, has grossed around $57 million as of April 1st in the USA and was released last December. Ghost Rider, a big piece of shit movie, raked in around $114 million and has been out for a shorter period of time. You'd think that Ghost Rider was a good movie based on the numbers, but once again, they don't mean shit.

So some of you might think the sequels/newer GTA's might not be as good as the older ones, but a majority of people think different, as you can see in those numbers. If VC was crap compared to III, people wouldn't have bought SA... but more people bought SA.
Don't underestimate the power of pandering. More people would've bought SA simply because it was all "gangstah up in this herre joint, yo!" I doubt quality played much of a part.

We all know GTA is known for its amazing gameplay. A gameplay no other GTA type game can match... So whether or not this game has amazing graphics... I can assure you the gameplay will be stunning. With games like GTA, Screenshots dont do it justice, its once you get in and play.
GTA is known for amazing gameplay? Really? I've always found it sloppy and a bit of a chore to play. I'd have to say that the gameplay is one of the worst aspects of it. How can you make such an assurance?

uh ok you can do what GTA can do in Saints Row for gameplay but saints row has a terrible story unlike GTA and has bad voice acting unlike GTA. so overall, if you can have a better story, voice acting and better controls then Saints Row then this game is the obvious winner. and yeah Saints Row is pretty much a rip off of the GTA games. here is a few examples:
1. Saints Row has a heavy focus on crime and gangs (like GTA)
2. Has an open city to explore with a bunch of side missions to do (like GTA)
3. can steal cars, murder anyone, own a house, and customize character (last two were San Andreas but first two were pretty much all of the GTA's)
what GTA has that Saints Row doesnt:
1. more missions
2. more compelling story
3. better voice acting
4. better humor
5. has better replay value (more hours of gameplay)
6 a more realistic way of breaking into cars (for GTA IV)
thats about it since Saints Row pretty much stole the rest of the GTA stuff like car jacking and police chases. so if someone had to choose between buying saints row or GTA IV, GTA would be the clear winner since overall it has more things to do then Saints Row and you would get your moneys worth. I rented Saints Row and beat it and found no good reason to go back to play its crappy side missions which all play out the same way.

I just want to correct you: Halo 2 made a staggering $125 million on its first day. Thats more than any movie ever took in on its opening weekend, and obviously more than any game. Get your "facts" straight.
Fantastic direction/Music/Ambience, if they manage to pull this through in throughout the game, its a winner. I'm loving this new trend, great music/cinematic quality to the trailers/games (Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, this, etc etc).
But on the other hand, was terribly suprised with the decrease in quality in gfx from the other trailer to this one, sometimes this felt a bit like a ps2 game (graphicwise) :/

Well, Euphoria only handles character interaction / physics afaik, the full rendering engine is something else. Anyway, it's good stuff, but I haven't seen Rockstar announce that they would be using it for GTA4, even though I hope so too.
The press release from Feb only said that Rockstar had licenced Euphoria "for future games" or some such. I can't wait to see it in action if it's coming to GTA4, though.

Also, Halo 2 was basically a one week wonder, it sold huge numbers for that opening week, but afterwards that was it, GTA had a big opening week, not as big as halo 2, but it continued to sell big the following week, and the following week, and so on.

Still...according to his numbers, GTA:SA outsold Halo 2 by just over 2:1, and like I already mentioned, the number of PS2s out there is roughly between 5 or 6 times the number of Xboxes, plus GTA:SA was on both platforms. The numbers don't speak to the quality of the game.
