Disney Interactive's Pure will be released in Europe this week on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and here are the First 10 Minutes from the game; as usual in video form. The game has given me some of the most fun play sessions this console generation (both in singleplayer and multiplayer) and there's no reason for racing fans to miss out on this fantastic game.
The developers, Black Rock Studio, has done some great work with the graphics engine. The framerate is steady and the game looks really good. The racers feel alive with their taunts and constant moving on the ATVs, even though I was surprised to hear how annoyed people were with the chants between the characters in the demo.
The ATVs feel heavy but are still very controllable and your maneuvers gets a quick response. One thing I really like is how you always have the option to cancel your started tricks quickly, and with this you have full control in the air - if you fall, you know it's all your fault. Except when the camera sometimes doesn't give you a good view of how the ground looks behind that big jump, but this goes away as soon as you learn the tracks.
The World on Tour career mode is pretty straight-forward, you enter tournaments and earn parts for your ATV. There are three different modes, and my favourite is easily the sprint mode - small tracks, not that many jumps and really intense driving. Race offers longer tracks and more big jumps, while Freestyle is trick-based and has power-ups placed throughout the courses. It's here where people might be disappointed, since there are not more modes to choose from - specially as race and sprint are pretty similar. I say: better to have few good modes than tons of boring modes that you have to force your way through in a career mode. Other than the World Tour mode you also have the classic racing modes, time trial and single event.
Pure unfortunately doesn't offer offline multiplayer, it sad since this game would be so awesome to play split-screen. It doesn't feel fair to say much about the online multiplayer since I've mostly played against North-Americans, and that sometimes results in some latency issues like in many other racing games. The game seems to sort this out fine from what I've seen, and you can always concentrate on your own racing without any hick-ups. Racing against 15 other players (filled up with AI controlled racers if needed) is just a blast, a total mayhem of people flying everywhere. It insanely intense and you really have to fight until the finish line.
I have to give the game a major thumbs up for the customization mode. I'm often turned-off by how some games just throws in tons of parts without telling you how they work and what they do. Here, when you get new parts it tells you how it's better and how it's worse compared to what you have on your current bike (more acceleration, less trick for example). There's also tons of different parts to add to your bike, which you then can use in the multiplayer mode.
Below you'll find a heavily edited First 10 Minutes video, the first races are easy and there's really not much action going on in them. The third race should show some nice stuff though. I also added a video showing how you create a bike, since it would just make the 10 Minutes video too long. Enjoy!
Heard its a real cool game, great for Disney. I have always been amazed by games from Lucas Arts, a basically movie group... but now looking at these videos of Pure, its a fine feeling that another movi group is greatly catching up with the technology.
Still, features-wise, its basically not as huge as MotorStorm 2. I think its a great game for thrill-based racing fans, although I've read in most reviews that it only revolves around down-hill thrill-rides, that's all(Much like PS2's excellent Downhill Domination)..., like me to tag us over till the real off-road king "MotorStorm 2" is released...
Posted by cjelly This is nothing like MotorStorm, at all. It's more like SSX on ATVs.
Exactly !, you cleared it up well.
I haven't played it but from all the things I've learned, I just couldn't place on my finger on it... silly me, I had to write so much to make my point above...
Anyhoo... the game has an ultra cool gfx-engine and customizations appear to be real fun as well.
Posted by moroboshi I see the big ass black borders around the screen that were there in the demo are still in the final game. What a stupid art decision.
@moroboshi - They're hardly "big ass black borders"... it's just a slight blur around the edges of the screen with darker corners. I can't say I noticed it at all when playing the demos on the PS3 and 360; it was only when someone mentioned it on a forum that I even knew they were there. Thankfully I don't find the effect in the slightest bit annoying or distracting. :)
I'm really looking forward to playing this game... hopefully GAME will send this tomorrow so I get it for Thursday (360 version). Then there's Wipeout HD the same day for the PS3... it's certainly going to be a great week for games! :D
The game is cool and looks wonderful, but the races become difficult really fast and the ATV's control a little odd compared to other ATV games. After about 5 days, its become a little boring to be honest.

LOL i didn't even notice till you said that! I can't believe people would moan about that!!
Anyway back to LittleBigPlanet beta! Thanks Eurogamer! Muhahaha!
I liked the demo to consider a buy, but these vids have convinced me looks loads of fun, but going to trade a couple of games =( and will have to wait till after my 3hr lecture to play it =(
Posted by LEBATO That looks really cool. Is there lots of parts to choose from manager or is that it? I hope there is more than what we saw in the vid.
There are tons more, sometimes I got over 5 parts when I won a race.
Posted by INDIGO How much do the different parts affect the vehicle handling? Because I wasn't really impressed with that aspect of the demo.
I don't think this game was to be taken that realistically. Like cjelly said above it's SSX with ATVs. Something I'm enjoying while waiting for even a slight mention of a new SSX.

I very much agree with this. There was something about the suspension and friction that didn't feel right to me. If this is adjustable with other components then that'd be great.
I'd also like to know if there's some way to disable the camera tweaks when you perform tricks, because that totally pulls me right out of the should-be dizzying experience of being rediculously high up in the air.
Been playing Pure for more than a week and its simply fantastic. Great grafx, great physics on the ground and ssx trick while in the air. online as smooth as it gets, even with 16 (on live that is).
And btw, it's got nothing to do with Motorstorm, it's a game about ATV and ATV's only.

@dingleberry doesn't matter, if you score with both shots and defend successfully all game it's still a win. Shouldn't have been 6-2 to Liverpool as shots mean nothing if they don't go in. (1 Hour ago)

Birmignham 2 shots on goal, 11 men behind the ball. Should have been about 6 - 2 to Liverpool. Rafa's going nowhere. (2 Hours ago)

@blmbox: Keep Rafa At Pool. Love him talking bollocks. Also refs are having too much influence on results, we need video refs ASAP, the time "lost" would be less than player protests now! (3 Hours ago)

I've got to say, it's funny to see Liverpool resorting to cheating in order to pick up a point against one of the league's lesser sides. Surely Rafa's days are numbered? (3 Hours ago)

Well Flashforward was boring again. Is it a full season or is it a nice short 16 episode one? I can't be arsed watching any more :I (3 Hours ago)

@Baleur: dunno what easy is ... (3 Hours ago)

Broncos and Steelers. TONIGHT! :8... (3 Hours ago)

Loved the demo! These tracks look crazy!
