Re: Support: Are they going to stop supporting BF4 when Hardline launches? Is CTE going to close? DICE isn't going to support BFH at all. They did not make Battlefield: Hardline. This does not seem like a valid complaint. If BF4 support stopped with BFH I would be livid. But it won't even slow down.
I'll have to disagree that the maps/gunplay are better. I think BC2 is mechanically a pure console/arcade game. Which is fine. That's exactly what they were going for.
One thing I really do hate in BF4 though: convolution. I'm right there with you on that. Less is more and all that. Excess is a problem in the core franchise right now. I've been saying it for a while: the way to make Battlefield better is to cut the fat and focus on what's good. They should start with Rush.
Honestly.. the brand damage may be.. good for the brand. Because they were on a slope. Demize has a very "everything including the kitchen sink!" approach to design. Battlefield 3 and 4 are (poorly written, perhaps) love letters to the genre. They are a greatest hits record. And they're worse off for it.
The only reason we have CTE now and incredible dev interaction in BF4 is because they fucked up in the first place. At this point, we're receiving more support than any Battlefield game since BF2, and things seem headed in the right direction.
BC24lyfe
I think the part where we agree on the convolution, is a major part of what makes me feel the gun play and maps are better.
They went with more is better with everything and anytime there was a hiccup they'd just nerf things into some gray area balance with everything else.
An oversaturation where things became less unique and less interesting
It seems like DICE has a lot of influence but really piss poor direction on where they want things to go. Like you're saying they need to trim the fat.
Unfortunately EA is stuffing them with crab cakes right now.
And if DICE doesn't know what makes BC2 so popular and many to consider it one of the best, than they really are lost.
Listening in CTE is a step in the right direction though yes
I want them to trim the fat, but Bad Company 2 is just dumbed down.
The reason it was so successful was because Bad Company is the first time DICE took a risk since the original Battlefield. The game has more character and more atmosphere then any other title in the series, AND they took a chance and added destruction to the gameplay. Battlefield fans love big, over the top warfare. This vision was lost once Battlefield 3 hit as DICE went for a more true-to-reality route to compete with other industry kings. Battlefield 4 is indeed a better game then BF3, it's just a shame it took this long to drop.
Bad Company 2 was also very approachable for new players. Anybody could blow a wall out and kill the mvp on the server, and a solid hit to the back of a tank would stop the thing dead in its tracks. No scope glint, no prone people across the map, etc etc.
The direction Battlefield is heading now is a sad attempt at being edgy (Hardline and Visceral Games). In an interview back before BF3 dropped, EA said they didn't want to dethrone CoD, they just wanted a slice of the pie. THAT'S WHAT IT'S BECOME. (Annual iterations, different developers)
It's just a shame DICE got stuck trying to offer Call of Duty players an alternative. They have to be sick to their stomach churning out iteration after iteration of BF3 by now.
They need to go back to their roots, take risks again...offer up something fresh and exciting. BUT, big daddy EA is expecting another big check come next year from their tried and true staple franchise..
2142 came out the year after BF2, and it wasn't annualized then either. Battlefield: Hardline exists because Medal of Honor failed. Star Wars is their big online game for next season.
Hardline is by Visceral but it follows EA's annual release schedule and takes the place of Medal of Honor.
We might as well up the ante and include premium.
I actually have no idea what Demize is working on.. let's role the DICE!
I don't think ANYONE thought BF4 was going to be so close behind 3 either Grift
There's actually a lot of things about BF3 that I prefer over BF4. If you could only mix the best of both together.
2142 came out one year after Battlefield 2 and was made by DICE. But they didn't need to develop 2142 for five platforms, while simultaneously supporting a pretty high tech engine for a host of other developers, and working on several other games.
The turn around time isn't the best evidence for BF4 being "rushed," the first two months of its launch are. I don't think anyone doubts that BF4 was rushed. EA has even more or less admitted it.
I'm kidding though. Your window is far too vague. I'd honestly make that bet with Phaethon.
3 is more evident than 4
You and Warrior are the ones discussing turn around time in correspondence with it being an annual release.
I think you are mixing us up a bit here.
I'm not willing to wager a BF5 game next year, I think a trailer is far more likely. Which is still a disheartening development following just buying the last one.
I think a lot of people can relate to that after buying 3 and seeing 4 such a short time after. I know I do
I don't really know what your point is here. Everyone knows that Battlefield 4 was rushed. And beyond that, I'd even agree that there's a lot of bad design in Battlefield 4. I just think it all ads up to a much better game than Bad Company.
Everyone knows BF3 was rushed too, and then they just went on to 4, then they just released that mutant Hardline, and we'll get a trailer next year for 5
Battlefront will come out which I'll love and they'll do a poor job fixing 4 because they'll be moving right along to 5 shortly after
I think DICE is much more than just Battlefield now too, which feeds into it. They've got Mirror's Edge, Star Wars, and one or two other titles they try to make now.
A shame too, I don't think Battlefield will ever get back to what it was in BC2 or ealier for that matter
I still miss the giant prop planes carrying a parachute company or carpet bombing entire spawn areas in 1942.
And uh.. why is Battlefront going to be alright? Why are they suddenly capable of doing that right?
They've already done a fantastic job of fixing BF4. That's what people like you (people who don't actually play it) won't admit. CTE is a fantastic initiative, and hopefully it continues to run for the life of BF4. Who knows. It certainly will run until the game is "fixed" to the satisfaction of the people who actually care enough about it to help them fix it.
Now, more cynically (but still informed), many of these issues go back to the first version of Frostbite. Before BF3. So it's pretty unfortunate that they had to totally break BF4 before enough people demanded a better product.
But it's cool that you can predict the future without even actually knowing your current events.
BF2 is still far, far better and if gamespy didn't shut it down, more people would still play it :(
DICE is also more than DICE. DICE LA is basically the framework of Danger Close rebuilt with DICE employees. Visceral made End Game for BF3. Which was great.
I would almost guarantee we will never get back to BF2 quality game design.
With Battlefront I think I just get carried away with it because it's Star Wars. But you're right I should probably be more cautious with my excitement for that too.
I don't think they have as much leeway to fuck up with that franchise however.
I feel burned by DICE, as someone who grew up playing their original titles. You just have more tolerance than I do and are drinking the Kool Aid in my opinion. It's not in the same style as Optimus walls of Halo text but it's in that league kinda
I plan on giving 4 a shot soon because I haven't played it yet, I feel optimistic since it is apparently better than 3 as you guys are saying.
It was totally broken before, which is why I waited to try it.
