I hope we get to see that trailer in its original form. If this article is true then I am pretty dissapointed. That, to me, would have been a much more exciting way to end the press conference,

bungie update, so many clues so many clues!!
Future Tents

Despite whatever eased into the ether regarding what we’re working on at Bungie, speculative hunches and guesswork certainly don’t tell the full tale. I’d go so far as to say these ramblings are barely even a Prologue, not even a Foreword to the storybook we’re putting together. Rest assured, there are multiple machinations afoot at Bungie, one is so close you can feel its familiar warmth on your cheek while you sleep; another so far off and foreign that like a faint star in deep space, you can only look to the heavens as its light speeds ever closer.

Lo, there is still another.

“It has to be a new Halo game since if it was an new IP Microsoft would not have their hands on the control of the brand and would not have had the power to silence Bungie about it.”
<Guilty Spark voice> Not true.

It's amazing how little the gaming press knows about contract obligation between publisher and developer.

The game publisher has authority over marketing, advertising and all forms of presentation. Even down to the screenshots that are officially released.

Now the developer has rights too, and they can be very extensive. While the developer can't control all marketing aspects of the game, they can have approval for marketing decisions made for the game. This can be as limited as consultation or as extensive as blanket power of approval.

It all depends on what the developer and publisher both agreed upon (in writing) at the start of their pub/dev partnership.

The publisher can exercise severe penalties against the developer for leaked game info. I read once that it can be something like $25,000 per leaked screenshot or capture and $250,000 for footage leaked from a game build.

There are clear reasons for Bungie complying with Microsoft's decision and none of them have to have anything to do with Halo.

We've seen a sloppy start to the new Microsoft/Bungie publishing arrangement. The fact that anyone at Microsoft couldn't communicate a decision like this to Bungie before E3 is ridiculous. And the more Mattrick tries to make it seem trivial the stupider he sounds.

Well guys, more news about the story that just won't die.
Bungie: E3 announcement cut "no laughing matter"

According to Eurogamer, the site was told by Mattrick during the show that Ryan had "just laughed" and said "We agree" upon receiving the news. Ryan recalls the conversation quite differently. ""Keeping things clean, I certainly didn't agree with the decision to delay our news until sometime after E3," he told Eurogamer today, adding, "Bungie is always concerned first and foremost with our fans. Whenever we are prevented from exceeding their positive expectations it is not a laughing matter."

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/bungie-e3-announ...
Hmmm. So Mattrick not only lied about the reasons Bungie's announcement was pulled, he also lied about Harold Ryan's reaction to it as well.

I'm also thinking Mattrick was solely responsible for Bungie's announcement being pulled in the first place.

If you ask me, Bungie is starting to try a bit too hard to appear independent.

They should, just like Microsoft, try to play things nice and downplay any animosity that may appear between the two as much as possible. Mattrick tried to do that. This is now the 3rd or perhaps even the 4th time that someone within Bungie are saying things that potentially undermine Microsoft as their publisher.

Microsoft has a lot to be grateful to Bungie for, but somewhere along the lines, people also seem to forget or overlook that Bungie has a lot to be grateful to Microsoft for as well. Halo or even Bungie themselves wouldn't be as big as they are today were it not for Microsoft's help.

Sure Bungie could be more conciliatory, but still, Mattrick misrepresenting the discussion that he had with Ryan is kind of nutty.

I think Mattrick needs to shut up about it and leave well enough alone until Bungie has had the opportunity to cool off. The more he keeps yapping about it the worse it seems to get.

hes an extremist, feels like he totally undermines MS, which is quite immature and insulting, as he must be naive and outright stupid if he doesnt realize how much MS did for bungie.
Anyhow, who really cares what he thinks, not like hes the chosen spokesperson for bungie.

The drama is stupid, strategic delays happen... and why is everyone assuming Bungie is telling the truth and MS not? I think people are ignoring what went down a mere 10 months ago and how a completely owned studio strong armed their way to not being owned. Why would MS do that? Read between the lines folks...

Strategic delays happen. Introducing strategic delays days before a major annoucement which had been teased for months is stupid. That's the difference. If say, the delay had been a month before hand, there's no story.

If Mattrick doesn't let slip what the game is after the event there's no story, nor is there a story if some cock and bull story is made up about everybody laughing about it.

Even EA are realising it's best not to fuck with your best developers. Outside of Bungie, Blizzard and maybe now Infinity Ward, there aren't many studios presently who would be able to pull off divesting themselves from somebody like Microsoft. Hence they get written about.

If there was more actual news at E3 it would be less of a problem!

In my opinion it was a good decision to delay the announcement. People just have stupid expectations, especially regarding to E3. There are some hard core gamers that want's to be wowed every five minutes with some CGI movies. You just can't deliver to those ridicolous expectations and there are alot of other gamers (for example casual gaming) that needs to be addressed. When MS will presents the new HALO IP and give it enough credit, nobody gives a fuck if it's presented at E3 or Games Convention or whatever.

I mean, just look back at the HALO 3 annoucement. Sure, it was a cool CGI, but the final game has had almost nothing to do with that so called ingame trailer.
They've said that MCs armor looks that way (all those bumps), because of the long time the battle is going on. And then, the final armor looked totally different. Just remeber on those stupid lies like that some invited reporters did a look at a alpha and they've claimed it's an open world and you could walk up to the mountains on the horizon. Don't get me wrong, because i think HALO 3 is a great game (even graphically), but like Forza 2 the devs did some hype that the final game can't stand. And at the end, you've got more people that are disappointed about the product.

The next product in the HALO universe is HALO WARS and it was shown at E3. I think one HALO Game is enough, because otherwise HALO gets inflationary.

I also get a feeling that Bungie are suspiciously antagonistic. But perhaps they're really that pissed off and disappointed, no conspiracy here?

Anyway, they're setting for Halo a dedicated event, HaloCon like id has had organized QuakeCon for many years now (or like Blizzard). This is pretty cool IMO, hopefully they'll announce something more than this new game only.

How about both? Last year they were mad because they were told to do something on short notice; this year they are mad at strategic delays (i.e. they heard Sony / Ninny had squat and roped in the SE deal).

I predict a rough road ahead for MS/Bungie. How much did MS get out of the deal? How long do they get "first rights" on all Bungie published products? MS pushed Halo very hard with huge marketing and brand cohesion (Xbox=Halo) because they owned the IP and studio. Now they own the IP and have dibs on the studio's products. If they don't like the product they can skip it or don't do first tier push if they don't feel it deserves such. And Bungie can be antagonistic #@$@#, continue to strong arm, with the goal to work with Sony or whoever. But just as R*'s non-GTA games are not instant gold there are dangers.

You look back at how MS mishandled a lot of studios and their tension with Bungie (who they allowed to be much more independant than other studios) and how Bungie's only fiscially significant franchise is Halo, owned by MS, and this looks like a divorse ripe for drama. I am sure Bungie is pissed... I am also sure MS is pissed at all their backdoor whining Bungie has engaged in over the years with strategic leaks to voice their displeasure.

They both have a lot to prove right now, so it will be interesting to see how much they blame eachother when they fail :P

I predict this will all be forgotten once the game is announced, most likely with a post-announcement interview with the headline along the lines of "In the end, I think it was for the best...", of course we'll never know really.

I predict in the next 4 years we will read, "Bungie inks deal with Sony/EA" or the like. I also predict a mass fan revolt along the lines of, "M$ sucks!" and "Bungie is overrated."
