According to how enthusiastic they seem about it MIGHT be the first game to properly capture this fast paced sport.

Good move showing the asian guy in the screenshots ;) China and japan usually love this game.

I just can't wait to see what we will be able to do to the hookers with a ping pong ball and padle. :)

Not to be a kill joy... but I want this on the REVOLUTION. Don't tell me that Rev would not be PERFECT for this :( Tennis, Baseball, Ping Pong, Fishing, sword fighting, boxing (with 2 controllers), etc are all perfect for Rev.

Ping Pong would dominate..... on revolution and you could like feel the shake each time you hit the ball. Sword fighting yes.... Imagine elder scrolls on revolution?

Imagine you pick the locks using the rev controller? Also the sword fighting and the casting of certain spells.

Indepth preview: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/698/698663p1.html
For what it is, and make no doubt about it, Table Tennis is a simple one-on-one ping-pong game, Rockstar's title is intense, fast, and engaging. But it's not like Doom or Unreal or Halo. Obviously. It doesn't instantly suck you in with blazing guns and sci-fi themes. Instead, you pick up and play, and a few minutes later you're familiar with the controls and the experimentation begins. Then, something interesting happens. The more you play, the deeper and deeper you'll dive into it. I went through a phase, in just one night, where I was slamming it with just the hard button over and over again. Later on, I switched players and found the spin game to be totally enthralling. Table Tennis is a little like Virtua Tennis in its intensity and easy-to-handle controls, but it's also a precision game that's compressed into a faster, more rhythmic pace. Jon Miller and I got into several serious rallies that lasted what seemed like minutes, and each one required our full attention and concentration. I know, I know, it's still table tennis, but Rockstar has made this work. In its own way, it's just as immediate as any fast-paced first-person shooter.
The game plays distinctly different depending on who you pick. For instance, the first character I picked was an African-British player whose skills excelled in power and speed. By quickly adapting to the game, I was able to beat just about anybody and went straight to the finals against Mr. Miller. You could approach the game solely with the right analog stick for hits and spins. That's how Jon played. Or for a more traditional approach, you can play using the face buttons for spins and the right analog button for attacks, which is how I did it. The left analog moves your character left and right across the plane of the table or backward for bigger power hits -- and to aim the direction of the ball around the table. The ball moves with incredible physics of its own. It's lightweight and spins just like a real ping pong ball. You can tell as soon as you start putting English on the ball. If you put a bottom spin on it, the opposite player will have to react with a hard or a counter spin, just to keep the ball on the table. If they try to put heavy spin on it, the ball will angle far from its intended spot.
In the end, this game is impressive. Since there is nothing to compare it to, and the game is still early, it's hard to compare it directly to game X, Y, or Z. But Jon and I both feel that Rockstar Presents Table Tennis re-creates the sport more accurately and with a feeling that's closer than any other sports game on consoles or PC. The game's immediacy and intensity are almost identical the real-life sport, and the feeling is replicated with impressive physicality and emotion. To use a food analogy, Table Tennis is like an extremely delectable chocolate. There is one distinct flavor, but it's rich, deep, and intense.
And a number of new pictures. 720p, 4xAA, HDR, sweat on the skin and clothes, decent skin shaders. Looks clean. I hope it has cloth physics!

Table Tennis is huge in both China and India. That consisits of over 2 billion people
and if they sold this game to just 1% it would be one of the biggest selling games ever.

Tbh, I don't think you could really make a serious ping pong game on the Rev.
There just to many factors that come with this; like, your position in contrast with the table and the ball, the way you hit the ball( for example with an effect) etc.
It just wouldn't work right, but I do figure it could be fun, but probably more in an "pimped eyetoy" way.

Game looks cool, btw:)

Hmmm the controller reacts in real 3D space. If you move left/right/forward/back it can sense it. If you move up or down it can sense it. It can also sense rotation/rolling.

Obvously there would be the hurdles of how they represented body position (just like this game has the hurdle of translating body movement + paddle movement + shot selection) but that is minor in regards to gameplay. The Revolution controller would map the actual paddle movements/placement well, and that is what matters in regards to gameplay. IMO is is perfect for this sort of game... even more so since it requires the gamer to (a) get OFF their butt and (b) simulates the real game. Call it a social commentary, but how sad is it that we are getting games that people can play in their own homes??? True, you need 2 peoeple of moderate skill to actually "play" so I see the place for the game--but a Nintendo version that required you to actually move your feet, swing a make believe paddle, etc... would be a ton of fun.

Basically it would be like playing real ping pong; they could make the game forgiving to a degree and allow some leeway in spin shots and stuff (e.g. they a very hard in real life, but allow gamers if they just do the motion of undercutting they would get the spin).

Come Fall I guess we will know whether the controller is good enough for this sort of game. Most of the people who have tested it say it is pretty percise, so we can hope :D If Nintendo makes this thing work it is good for all of us... it may mean we get some new innovative controls come Xbox 3/PS4.

But then the only thing it reacts to is basicly the swing of your arm when you hit the ball.
So regardless of where your standing, or where the ball ends up, if you just swing your arm, you hit the ball...no?

Not exactly. The Rev controller works in all 3 planes + Pitch/Roll. It would not be very difficult to interpolate linear movement across the X plane as foot movement and interpolate movements that are X-Y on a curved path as a swing. Put another way, the controller KNOWS where I am in space. If I move left 5 feet it the real world it can translate that as moving 5 feet left in the game, and when I swing the swing would now take effect at 5 feet to the left.

Think of it as EyeToy and how it can can to a degree interpolate your depth and movements. Hypothetically *if* the coordination of the paddle movements with the body of the character (i.e. the paddle moves fine but does some really wonkey movements on the character) they could go two routes: (a) just show a paddle or (b) go the Nintendo-cartoon route.

But the actual placement/movement of the paddle is not the hard part. At worse you would be stuck with a floating paddle -- but on the control side you could move the paddle in a 3D plane and swing from any position you wanted without an issue. There are flash games that kind of work like this... you move in a plane and can "swing" at any time... of course these use sprites and are not graphical eye feasts, but the mechanics work fine.

Ah yes, silly me...
I forgot that you can also display your own movements on the screen.
That way it makes a lot more sense:)
if this actually works smoothly and accurate, then this could deffinatly be awesome!:D

So, what would probably have to be done, is a quick sort of calibration, everytime you start up a game.
So the Rev determines a "centerpoint", and calculates things from there, right?

Not silly... you raise good questions! It is a new concept. My suggestion may not even be the best solution. But the controller is very robust; toss in a camera and we are talking a totally new way of playing games. Not that I am interested (I quite like my office chair!) but it should broaden the market.

Now THAT could be a problem ;) I am guessing that + one of the buttons could be used to bring it back to your middle point. If they do the floating paddle they could do something simple (e.g. "put your arm out horizontal to the ground and hit the botton) but calibration in a game that does 3D space could be tricky.

Baseball & golf would be a little bit more straight forward since you never really move. Obviously the Rev controller requires a LOT of forthought and consideration. But the tradeoffs are pretty big.

Ironically the easiest games to get to work would be FPS... I heard MP worked really good with it... but we all know how many FPS Nintendo gets... not to mention if they go the "weak 3D" route it will alienate the rabid FPS fanbase :(

Well, I could imagine the 'aiming' working ok, but I guess walking would still have to be done with a controller.
Or you'd have to be walking on a platform of some sorts...
