Any of you guys playing this? I wanna get competin' in the score attack with somebody and I don't just wanna compare with random leaderboard person. If anyone is playing this and fancies themselves alright at it, I'd love to get some competing scores going.

Whats it on and where?

Huge fan of After Burner as a kid and was very gutted when the arcade version never saw light of day on console... to my knowledge anyway.

It's on XBLA and PSN, came out wednesday and thursday respectively.

As with all of Sega's arcade games of this type it's the most fun if you can battle someone on the leaderboards. Me and my closest mate Martin had some mad tug of score wars on Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast.

After Burner Climax has a score attack mode, and I've got a friend who has it but I've got like four times his score and he doesn't seem into bothering with that stuff. Would be cool if we could get some competition going here. I'm not super good at it or anything.

Yeah I am. It's 800 points and easily worth it. Spot on arcade port, super slick and super fast.

It takes some getting used to NOT rolling in it, because you roll by yanking the stick far in one direction then back in the other. It's easy to do that by mistake in the heat of things, but learn to move it more smoothly (which in arcades with the flight stick there is just natural) and rack up the combos!

Nice. I had forgotten about this in the business of the week. I'll have to check out the demo first though. I feel sorta burnt on my purchase of Outrun XBLA. It's a horrible port imo.

Well, I guess it depends what you're refering to specifically with the Outrun port.

This is a fairly bare bones port of the arcade game, so in that regard it's similar to OOA, but it's a blazing fast, rock solid game with none of the sligth framerate issues OOA had.

It's no Coast 2 Coast though if that's your point of comparison in terms of extra content and "console specific" modes. This has an EX Options thing where you can mess with settings for the "arcade" mode of the game. More lives, bigger reticule, infinite missiles and things like that, but that's about it in terms of tangible "extras".

The score attack mode gives you unlimited lives though and simply records your scores and slaps that on a leaderboard. The EX Options cheats don't work in this mode, and it's purely there for people to compare scores and compete. That and the fact that it's a great arcade game makes it well worth the 800 points in my book.

Well, the frame rate was what really bummed me out about Outrun, but some of the textures looked pretty awful too, and while I accept that is the result of the directness of the port, there are versions of Outrun that look glorious in HD. It would have made a lot more sense if they ported the PC version instead. The lack of extra content really didn't bother me much, since the price was right, but the slowdowns were unacceptable considering the hardware it's running on.

I also sorta wanna buy VOOT still too.

Yeah, well, if you scrutinize the textures here, some of them look a bit iffy too, but as you say it's a direct arcade port and not a fault of the port per se. But man, the way things come together this is a great looking game, and holy crap it's fast. When you fly near the surface of the water at sunset later on it's almost dizzying how fast it is.


As for VOOT, it's a tougher pill to swallow for sure. No split screen, scarce modes for solo play, and a steep 1200 points make it a bit hard to recommend. There's online, but unless you've friends that are into it, the online component isn't particularly fulfilling either. It echoes of a superb game and great times had with it, it's just a bit difficult to recreate those times I guess.

Yeeeeaaaahhh... I mean.. yeah.. sorta. Not if you're some kind of miracle child and have friends with xboxes that are into VOOT, but as a rule of thumb people don't. So yeah.

I hopped online with it and got raped in all the ways of the kamasutra, so there are mostly japanese OCD loons on it.

Well, I wasn't aware that only mods can create topics, but it's probably so that you don't end up with a bajillion topics for the same game. Whenever you want a topic created for a specific game in here, drop me a pm.

To be perfectly honest, I've never understood either. It seems redundant to me, but they use it on the other side of the forum.. you know.. on bizarro Gamersyde.
