Well PS3/PC. I'm really happy that they're doing a PC beta. I'm really unsure about this one.. so I can't wait to check it out next month.

BASH is pleased to present Battlefield Bad Company 2's producer who comes to us all the way from the home office of Digital Illusions CE (DICE) in Stockholm Sweden, it is none other than the legendary Gordon Van Dyke. Gordon is on BASH to talk to us about all the awesome tech going into his new baby, BFBC2.

This is a wide-ranging interview and we cover a lot of ground. With me to help cover that ground with Gordon (aka "Lex Luthor") is BASH regular, Garetjax from codtv.tv.

Among the interesting personal facts that Gordon drops our way is that he was a former competitive player (hence the "Lex Luthor" tags), but get this...he was also a PC modder. And his mods are the reason he got to work at DICE. I'm sure his street cred with our community just shot straight up, huh?

Of course we asked about BFBC2 as well.

* We go into depth on the Frostbite gaming engine.
* We talk about the possibilities of modding the game.
* We talk about the potential for competitive BFBC2 play.
* We of course talk about the fact that BFBC2 will have dedicated servers.
* The PC beta is also discussed.

Thanks to all the folks who helped make this cast happen: Gordon at DICE, Matt Pruitt, Jino T. and Kelly E. at EA. Thanks guys.
Good stuff! BASHandSlash is where FourZeroTwo originally announced IWNet (which was probably a mistake, taking it directly to the community that would reject it completely).. and generally speaking, is a hardcore Call of Duty site. None too surprising that DICE would make their way to that venue eventually...
he was also a PC modder. And his mods are the reason he got to work at DICE.
I'm not sure why that would surprise anyone. Like 50% of Valve are modders.

A multiplayer beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be available on PlayStation 3 come November 19 and then hit PC in December, developer DICE announced today.

Although i don't own a PS3, "For Europe and Asia - Keep your eyes open for local opportunities!" I hope this doesn't mean Europe is going to be screwed again, and get terrible lag. I still play BC1 on the xbox360, and the amount of lag is just terrible. I take CoD's peer to peer connection to BC's "dedicated servers" any time of the day.

Me and some old clanmates from Battlefield 2 are getting quite interested on this. Can't wait to try the PC version.

Beta walk through (PS3).

I see they're still using the simplified armor model from 2142 (and I assume the console games) where the back is the only real weak point. That's a bummer. I love how deep BF2 tank battles could get.

Love the sound - great as always.
Anyone feel free to add me for the beta: turn-

I'd love to run games with intelligent people who can play strategically.
After switching from the 360 to PS3 a while ago I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a large amount of players on the PSN with a decent amount of common sense, which is disappointing and could potentially ruin someone's experience in a game like this where winning depends on teamwork. I'm crossing my fingers people playing will realize it's not just only running to the middle (or camping in the furthest back part) of the map and trying to rack up their kill-count.
And I'm just hoping this doesn't turn into a M203-fest where people are just running around trying to level buildings as fast as they can.

In other words, I'm praying this game will be played the way DICE is intending it to be. I guess if console kids ruin it I'll just get it for PC where I know most players are competent enough to let me enjoy my time.

looking hot!

liked:
manually spotting
getting points for spotting
choosing in which squad mate to spawn
destruction (just keeps getting better. just curious to see how far they go. how being able to destroy everything changes the gameplay.)
shooting: it takes much less rounds to take down enemy!! (can count the number of times in BC1 i'm shooting someone in the face with a smg while he calmly walks torward me and takes me down with a knife!...
orders. ability to give basic commands to squad mates (can we do this generaly or just to gold crates?)

didn't like:
kill call! (i mean, this in CoD took the fun and purpose of snipping. some might call it camping, but it's all part of a combat, getting a good spot and taking down the opposing team. although here he says the maps are two big the position won't be given away, anyone playing this after a few months will know immedietly were the enemy is. lame)
animations (revive animation is lame, same as in bf2...zap friend with defribillator, and they "emerge" from the air. couldn't there be a standing up animation?!)

The fact that they revive immediately probably has as much to do with gameplay as anything.

The kill cam is a little lame, but at least they're trying to give away as little information as possible.

true that, but after months of playing, everybody will know even with the very little info they give away. BF series had so much original cool things, that they don't need to adopt so much from CoD. Specially lame things like kill cam.
You know what they could take for CoD? the control mapping. Pressing Y (and thus letting go of the look analog stick) to draw the knife it's just stupid.

they should instead bring back chain of command...

I definitely agree about the kill-cam. Change it to a controllable aerial view of you body or something.
The Battlefield games are one of the few games where I feel okay about sitting somewhere and just picking people off. When the sniper is just a semi automatic AR with a scope ala Call of Duty, I just feel like a camper if I stay in one spot too long.

From the videos I've seen it doesn't look like you are required to equip the knife anymore. Looks like more of an instant strike as in COD.

I could be remembering incorrectly but weren't melee and grenades hot keys in the first Bad Company too?

And lets give credit where it's due.. Call of Duty borrowed those features from Halo.

I know, I was just using that as an example of what I was talking about. In the first bad company you had to first press a button to equip the knife then strike someone. Maybe I'm wrong but in the videos I've seen it looks like a one button attack affair.

No you're right (I think). I just thought I remembered BC1 doing the same.. but it's been a long time since I played Bad Company and only ever played the beta.. so I'm probably just remembering it wrong.

I sorta like it both ways. Having to equip your knife/nade adds a different dynamic to the game.. it works especially well in more "realistic" shooters.. but I don't mind the arcadey pacing of hotkeys.

you press Y on the xbox to both equip and melee at the same time. after that, you press the fire to melee again (because the knife its equipped). But my problem is to equip and strike with the knife you have to let go of the right joystiq, which is use to look. so in a quick one to one squirmish, you momentarily loose sight of the enemy

Has anyone gotten a code from 4players.de? People on GAF are saying they got their emails with the key already, and I've gotten nothing.
I have one for myself already, but I was looking to get a few friends of mine into it as well.

You don't have a code?
They're still giving them out at fileplanet (I think) and a couple other sites are handing them out tomorrow.
If you don't end up getting one by the time the beta's out, I'll give you one. I'd PM you now, but I'm trying to reserve it for a friend.

Eh, nevermind. I'll just PM you a code now.

Just create a NA account, download, and play on your EU or whatever profile.
The beta isn't only NA though; people with EU codes are already able to download the beta. I think the keys may be region-locked, though.
